Widows Application for Confederate Pension
THE STATE OF TEXAS
COUNTY OF NACOGDOCHES
     I, Mrs. MARY JANE PARROTT do hereby make application to the Comptroller of Public Accounts for a pension, to be granted me under the Act passed by the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved April 7, A. D. 1913. On the following grounds:
     I am the widow of W.H. PARROTT, deceased, who departed this life on the 21st day of February, A. D. 1925,in the county of Nacogdoches, in the State of Texas.
I have not remarried since the death of my said husband*, and I do solemnly swear that I was never divorced from my said husband, and that I never voluntarily abandoned him during his life, but remained his true, faithful lawful wife up to the date of his death. I was married to him on the --- day of October AD. 1902 in the county of Nacogdoches, in the State of Texas.
My husband, the said W.H. PARROTT enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the War Between the States of the United States, and that he did not desert the Confederate service. I have been a resident of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, A. D. 1900, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the stun of $300.00 per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the value of one thousand dollars, exclusive of the home of the value of not over $2000; nor do I receive any aid or pension front any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true:
1. What is your age? 66 years old
2. Where were you born? In Mississippi
3. How long have you resided in the State of Texas? About 60 years
4. How long have you resided in the county of your present residence. About 60 years.
5. What is your Post office address? Garrison, Texas,
6. Did your husband draw a pension? If so, give his file number. Yes, 16138
7. What was your husband's full name? William Henderson Parrott
8. In what state was your husbands command originally organized? Texas
9. How long did your husband serve? 4 years If known to you give date of enlistment and discharge. Don't know exact date.
10. What was the name or letter of the company, or number of the regiment or battery of artillery in which your husband served ? If he was transferred from one branch of service to another, give time of transfer, description of command and time of service, (If applicant's husband was a pensioner give his file number, which is evidence sufficient for proof of service.) 11. Name branch of service in which your husband served, whether infantry, cavalry, or the navy, or if commissioned as an officer by the President, his rank and line of duty, or if detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, the nature of such service, and time of service. See his application
12. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law? No
     Wherefore your petitioner prays that her application for a pension may be approved and such other proceedings be had in the premises as are required by law.

Kruse, who are personally known to me to be credible citizens who, being by me duly sworn, on oath state that they personally know that Mrs. Mary Jane Parrott, applicant for a pension as the widow of W.H. Parrott deceased is in truth and fact the widow of said F.M. Parrott, deceased; that they personally know that she has not remarried since the death of her husband, for whose service in the Army she claims a pension and that they have no interest in this claim.

Strickland who are personally known to me to be credible citizens, who, being by me sworn, on an oath state that they are personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in her application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim. And further make oath to the following facts touching the service of applicant's husband in the Confederate Army: (State fully your source of knowledge). We have known Mrs. Mary Jane Parrott and her deceased husband, W.H. Parrott many years and know that h drew a Confederate pension in his lifetime.

CERTIFICATE OF THE STATE AND COUNTY ASSESSOR
     I, Forest Fuller State and County Assessor in the County of Nacogdoches State of Texas, do certify that Mary Jane Parrott whose name is signed to the foregoing application for a pension, under the Act of the Thirty-third Legislature, approved April 7, A.D. 1913. is charged on the tax rolls of said county with a homestead of the value of One Hundred and ninety dollars.\

APPLICATION FOR MORTUARY WARRANT

STATE OF TEXAS }      I SAM FRANKS,
County of Nacogdoches }

Do hereby certify that I am the person to whom is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the Mrs. J.E. PARROTT, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whose file number were 35704 and whose original county was Henderson.
     The said pensioner Mrs. Mary J PARROTT died on the 11th day of August, 1958, in the town of Garrison, Tex, County of Nacogdoches, Texas.      The pensioner died in the home of Sam Franks, who was related to the pensioner as son.
     That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner Mrs. Mary Jane PARROTT.
     I further certify that the pensioner, in the best of my knowledge and belief, has not cashed the warrant for the current quarter.
     I am related to the pensioner as (Friend) son, that my Post office address is Garrison, Texas.

That said body was prepared for burial by me on the 11 day of August, 1958, and that I am of the opinion that warrant herein applied for should be issued to the said Sam Franks who makes the foregoing application.

Please send us your certification concerning the marriage of Mr. Parrott and Mary Jane Parrott; also send us verification of the date of death of Mr. Parrott,

Mrs. Parrott indicated that she may have remarried after the death of this veteran. Please state whether or not your records show this fact. If so, give the date she remarried.

Dear Madam:
     I am in receipt of your application for a Confederate pension, but cannot approve same at this time since application states that you were married to W. H. Parrot in October 1902. The present law requires that widows must have married veteran on whose service record pension is applied for, prior to January l, 1900. The Legislature just adjourned amended this law so as to permit widows who were married to veterans prior to January 1,1930, to become eligible for Confederate pension, but this law does not become effective until June 17th, 1926.

     Your application will be kept on file and approved when the new law goes into effect at which time, you will be formally notified and affidavit mailed to you to be executed covering first quarterly payment.

Gentlemen:

I have your letter of March 17 stating you have pending a claim for death pension filed by Mrs. Mary Jane Parrott, of Garrison, Texas, as widow of a Confederate veteran.

The records of this office show W.H. Parrott Of Nacogdoches County, Garrison Texas executed an application for Confederate Pension in the state of Texas in which he stated he was a member of Company K; 19th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army. The application was approved on a report from the office of the Adjutant General, War Department. Washington D.C., in August 1909. He drew a pension from Texas until his death Feb. 21, 1925, under File No. 16138 Nacogdoches County.

March 13, 1925 Mrs. Mary J. Parrott widow of William Henderson Parrott executed an application for Confederate Pension on his service record. The application for pension was signed by her mark before A.T.Russell, on March 13, 1925 as County Judge, and Mary Jane Parrott.

The application shows she was married to William Henderson Parrott on October__1902, in Nacogdoches County, Texas. His death occurred in February 21, 1925 in Nacogdoches County. No further information is given as to their marriage.

Mrs. Mary Jane Parrott also shown as Parrott was granted a pension on the service record of William Henderson Parrott under File No. 40922 and she drew a pension until August 11,1958 when we received notice of her death in Garrison, Texas on that date. The notice was given this office by the Oakley- Metcalf Funeral Home. On August 12,1958 stating the wife of Confederate Soldier Henderson Parrott had died and they were asking for a burial allowance. The application for a burial warrant as was furnished the Funeral Home at Nacogdoches, Texas and the claim was filed by one Sam Franks who claimed to be the son of Mrs. Mary J. Parrott. The claim was paid to Mr. Franks and the entire expense was paid by Mr. Franks according the statement from the funeral home.
