THOMASON / THOMPSON CEMETERY OF NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TEXAS

Events

Thomason Cemetery is located between Swift and Melrose off of County Road 330 in Nacogdoches County, Texas.

It is on private property. There is a bridge across a creek that is rotted out; it has an iron frame work but the wood has to be replaced to get into the cemetery. It has no fence around it and no one has been to it in many years. Some stones are still standing but a grass fire got out 15 or 20 years ago and the wooden markers were destroyed. It is located in the south east corner of a 400 acre strip the present owner has for sale (August 2001). Fifty years ago it could have been reached by a road out of Melrose; taking the Jamesville Road to Cisro Kendrick's farm turn left and go to the Muckleroy farm, come through the woods to the Walker place at Mt. Gillian. The dirt road dead ends into the road from Swift to Jamesville, Mountain and Black Jack. The information below came from the Thompson family genealogy. Jane Hamil was a sister of Billie Wingate's Great-grandmother Margaret Hamil Bentley. They are also ancestors of Senator Roy Blake, Colonel Lynn T. Blake, Bennett Blake and many of the Thompsons and Muckleroys of Nacogdoches.

Contact Billie Wingate if you wish to be part of a group trying to clean up this cemetery and get CSA markers for the veterans interred here.

A Tombstone Transcription was performed August 2004 by Charles Brightwell.
The Cemetery was Fenced April 2004 by BSA Troop 103 under the leadership and direction of,  Alex  N.  Pickard,  Eagle Scout Project.

The initial transcript was made in August 2001 by Billie and Dick Wingate then typed electronically by TXGenWeb Nacogdoches County Coordinator in August 2001.

Every effort has been made to make an accurate transcription. If you have additional information or photos of any of these persons or if you believe there is an error in the transcript please email TXGenWeb Nacogdoches County Coordinator with the information but please DO NOT send images or attachments without an exchange of email first. Unexpected email with attachments will not be opened due to the threat of viruses and worms.

This web page is an alphabetized list of the persons buried at the cemetery.

A text version of this list with the names in the same order as the graves are seen in the cemetery is available in the Nacogdoches County, Texas section of the USGenWeb Project Archives . Use your browser find or search feature to locate the names in the text file after clicking on the link and loading the file into your browser.
