H. W. (Bus) Wyres Dead, Constable Ollie Strode Surrenders
Near the noon hour Sunday on north street [sic], Sheriff Butler, Constable Ollie Strode and a deputy Sheriff stopped a car which H. W. (Bus) Wyers [sic] was driving, for the reason that they wished to search it and make other investigations.When Wyers got out of the car, it is claimed that he made an effort to draw a pistol from his right hand pocket, and Constable Strode asked him, "not to do that", yet according to witnesses, he continued the effort of drawing a gun, then the officer fired one shot, which struck Wyers in the neck causing instant death.
Mr. Strode immediately surrendered to the Sheriff, who brought him to the Court House, and later placed him in jail, where he remained until today but was released on a bond of 2,000.00 after District Attorney Stone had asked that the examining trial be postponed until next Friday in order that County Attorney Lacey could be present.
Only one witness was placed on the stand at the hearing today.
Funeral Services are Held at North Church Monday for Bus Wyres
Funeral services for Hiram W. (Buss) Wyes [sic], were held Monday afternoon at 6 o'clock in the North Church cemetery by Rev. A. J. Crawford, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.Mr. Wyes [sic] was born in Marlia on January 2, 1885. He married Miss Johnnie Sparks of this city about 14 years ago and the couple have resided in Nacogdoches for the past ten years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wyres is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Wyres of Mercury, Texas; one brother, Dock Wyres of Mercury; one sister, Mrs. Jim Uzzle, who lives in Kentucky and one uncle, Joe Wyres, of Brady, Texas.
Active pallbearers' were H. E. Hendrix, Whit Smith, Buck Watson, Hosea Edwards, Paul Whitaker, E. A. Fitch, Jake Summers and Scottie McCraine.
