John Henry Hart (1 Jan 1837-25 Jul 1895)

J. H. HART, a prominent citizen of Omaha, Morris County, Texas, is a native of Alabama, born in Chambers County, January 1, 1837, a son of Darrell and Jane (Pitts) Hart. His father was a native of Edgefield District, South Carolina, but when a young man, settled in Alabama, where he died September 6, 1855. He had a family of ten children - Martha A., Susan, Thomas D., James M., William E., Stephen P., Benjamin F., Milledge H., Robert J. and J. H.

J. H. Hart remained in his native county till 1855, when he came to Texas and settled in Titus, now Morris County, and engaged in farming, which he followed exclusively until 1873. Of late years he has been engaged in the mercantile business at Omaha, and now has one of the largest and best stocked stores in the town. He is one of the successful business men of Morris County, and is a representative, influential citizen. He has held the office of sheriff and tax collection of Titus County, holding this position four years.

November 6, 1855, Mr. Hart married Huldah M., daughter of George Avery, and they have eight children - Robert D., Ella, John H., George D., Lura H., Lizzie F., Elmer B. and James H.

In March, 1862, Mr. Hart enlisted in Company I, First Texas legion, and was afterward transferred to Company N, of the same legion, and was appointed first lieutenant, and was subsequently promoted to captain. He served with the Army of the Tennessee and participated in the principal engagements of that Department.

Mr. Hart, in addition to his mercantile interests, has large real estate interests in Morris County, and is classified among the wealthy men of the county.

John Henry "J.H." Hart was born Jan 1, 1837, died Jul 25, 1895, and is buried in the Omaha City Cemetery, B Row 5. On November 6, 1855, he married Hulda M. AVERY, born Dec 11, 1840, died Aug 18, 1927, and is buried beside her husband. (B Row 5)
