DeMontel Ranch, Castroville

LOCATION: The De Montel home place is located 1 1/4 miles northwest of Castroville. To reach the family cemetery, take Mexico Street to CR 477 (River Road); north on CR 477 to CR 466. Left on CR 466 about 1/4 mile to gate on the left side. Follow west edge of field about 1/8 mile. Cemetery is on the right at the base of low hill.

NOTE: The following tombstone inscriptions were copied word for word, line for line.  Tombstones identifying more than one grave are identified by a hyphen (1-2).  Underlined information is relative to all graves or burials sharing a common tombstone.  FS signifies footstone.  A slash (/) indicates the end of a line.  Information in italics (italics ) represents comments or observations made by the transcriber or are from other sources as noted.

Zion Lutheran Church burial records indicate the following: (No. 98) George Alex Charles de Montel (Lutheran) Age 69 yrs., 9 mos., 11 days. Died Castroville, Aug. 3, 1882. Buried: At home near Castroville, Aug. 4, 1882, Rev. Pfennig. (Born Oct. 24, 1812) Spouse: Louisa W. Scheidemantal nee Pingenot. Children: Charles, Olga, Edward, Pauline, Oscar, Robert and Mary.

There were other burials in the cemetery, slaves of Charles De Montel, but headstones have disappeared. Related to Connie Balmos by Ralph De Montel, March 18, 1979.

 UNMARKED GRAVES

In 1971 Lucy Davis conducted a survey of this cemetery and recorded the following additional graves. It is believed that they were either unmarked but known from family tradition (related by Mollie De Montel to Lucy and Ann Davis) or marked with wooden markers that have since disappeared.

Zion Lutheran Church burial records indicate the following: (No. 152) Charles Hart Taylor. Age 7 mos., 12 days (Died of paralysis) Died July 30, 1892. Buried - Montel Farm, July 31, 1892, Rev. Hummel. Parents: Harris Blanton Taylor and Pauline nee Montel. Born Castroville, Dec. 18, 1891.
