THE PAUL
LEON BASS FAMILY

The newspaper headline read, P. L. Bass, 45 year Business Head Here, Dies Monday, October 10, 1955. Then the article continued, Born in Carrollton, Georgia, in 1876, Mr. Bass came to Texas in 1899, settling in Alvarado, but moved to Jefferson in 1909 where he was a manager for Perkins Dry Goods here for a number of years before becoming owner of the present Bass Dry Goods. He married Mattie Amy Cotter in 1896 and to this union were born six children: Leon, Myron, Olivia, Mattie Pearl, James and Maude Estelle.&rdquo
Many people in Jefferson today had family members who worked with Paul Leon Bass at Perkins Dry Goods when sidewalks and footcrossings&rdquo were paved luxuries not enjoyed y the horse and buggy traffic. Evidence of that is shown in the picture. This store building on the corner of Polk and Lafayette streets was owned and operated by Jim Moore as Denton Drug Company for years before being destroyed by fire in 1980.
Mildred, Milton and Imogene Bass once shared ownership of Bass Dry Goods in that building. They had taken excerpts from a family history of the Bass Family written by Myron Bass to bring us an article for the Marion County Scrapbook. Aren&rsquot we lucky to have such co-operation!
Paul Leon Bass was born ten years after the close of the Civil War, but his parents, James Arnold and Olivia JOHNSON Bass, were geographical victims of Sherman&rsquos march through their home state of Georgia. Paul L. recalled later that at one time he had just one garment &ndash a kind of night gown affair made out of a flour sack. Ann Olivia told of having trunks of confederate money that had become worthless. She said the last time she was able to spend any of it, she paid $15.00 for five yards of calico. Calico usually sold for 5 cents a yard. However, pictures of their home in Georgia, shows a large, attractive two-story home with porches on both floors, decorated with rather ornate banisters.
Mattie Amy COTTER Bass was born October 1, 1876 in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas, the daughter of Thomas A. and Frances E. PALMER Cotter. It is thought they moved from Tennessee to Alvarado, Texas in the late 1890&rsquos. Thomas Cotter was a farmer and told of taking his produce from Alvarado to Jefferson by wagon to sell and then buy supplies. In the late 1890&rsquos or early 1900&rsquos when the government opened western Oklahoma lands to settlement, he acquired 160 acres of land near Hobart and lived there until his death. Paul L. Bass moved to Alvarado from Georgia and lived for a while with his brother, John M. and wife, Pearl. John and Jim Bass, his older brothers, were connected with the Mistrot brothers, who operated a chain of dry goods stores over Texas. Paul L. worked for this firm for a short time, but later worked for a grocery store owned by George Cotter, an uncle of Mattie&rsquos. While driving a delivery wagon for the store, he was involved in an accident. He sustained a broken leg. He sometimes spoke of selling eggs at six dozen for 25 cents.
While Mattie was attending Midlothian College, near Alvarado, Paul persuaded her to run away with him and get married. When they returned to tell her father, she reported that she had gone fishing and caught a Bass.
Paul told his children that he was making $20 a month when he got married, that they not only lived off it, but bought and paid for furniture for their rented house. Some of the furniture was still in use in their home, along with some pieces they got as wedding presents, when they died.
Their first son, Charles Leon, was born in Alvarado, November 27, 1897 and also Frank Myron Bass was born there on June 29, 1901. In 1902 the family moved to Athens, Texas, where Paul worked in the Perkins Bros. Dry Goods store, managed by his brother, John. They lived in Athens for 7 years and lived in 7 different houses, often joking that it was cheaper to move than to pay rent. Two daughters were born in Athens; Frances Olivia July 6, 1905 and Mattie Pearl was born December 22, 1908.
The summer of 1909 the family moved to Jefferson, where Paul assumed management of Perkins Bros. Dry Goods store. They lived in a rented house that belonged to a Mr. Spellings. This house had a well on the back porch outside the kitchen door; up to this time all wells were in the yard; water had to be carried some distance to the house. Of course, there was no indoor plumbing, but the house was wired for electricity during the time the family lived in it. Kerosene lamps had been the sole source of light; a single drop in the center of each room with a brass socket to hold a bulb was the extent of the electrical outlets. There were no other electric appliances and heating and cooking was by wood burning stoves.
Jefferson gave the Bass family a warm reception. They joined the Jefferson Methodist Church and Leon and Myron enrolled in the Jefferson Public Schools. On November 25, 1910, tragedy struck the family when Mattie Pearl died of what the doctor called membranous croup. Out of this distressing experience came a closer commitment to the church. Besides attending church services the family started the practice of family worship.
During this time the children&rsquos grandparents, James Arnold and Ann Olivia, disposed of their property in Georgia and came to Texas to live alternately with the three sons, Paul, James and John. The grandfather was in his 80&rsquos and the grandmother around 70. He had a snow-white head of hair and equally white Santa Claus beard. He also had one glass eye that he would take out each night and put on the mantle. This was fascinating and awesome experience for the children to watch.
The death of their grandfather Bass incidentally brought the Bass children their first ride in an automobile. A telegram came one Sunday while they were in Sunday School telling of his death. A Mr. Whelan offered his big red Studebaker car with high back red leather seats and no doors to pick up the kids and take them to the station to catch a train to Athens for the funeral.
Early in 1913, the three Bass brothers; Jim, John and Paul decided to quit the Perkins stores; and go into business for themselves. They bought a store in Yoakum and all three families moved there. About six months later they bought a smaller store in Kenedy. The Paul Bass family moved to Kenedy and he managed that store until the summer of 1915. James Thomas Bass was born in Kenedy on June 3, 1914. He was a strong baby but came near death when he was only a few weeks old. Phlegm had collected in his throat and only a quick response by a Dr. Hubbard enabled the obstruction to be removed. The doctor advised that he be allowed to suck on slices of fat bacon to keep the phlegm from collecting and he had no further trouble.
Kenedy was a wild and wooly town at that time, often called Six-Shooter Junction because many men wore guns at all times. Paul finally said, This is no place to raise a family and decided to move back to Jefferson where the manager&rsquos job of the Perkins store happened to be open.
The store had been moved to newer and larger quarters on the main corner of the business section and enjoyed good business for many years. The family moved into a rent house owned by the Singleton&rsquos near the Katy railroad tracks in the neighborhood where the Sullivan&rsquos lived. Mrs. Leaf and Sheriff Terry also lived in the vicinity. A few months later they moved to a place across the street from the Methodist Education building is now, and a little later bought the place where Mattie and Paul lived the rest of their lives, the house on the corner of Walker and S. Frious Street. It had running water inside with a sink, bath, tub and lavatory, but no indoor toilet. It had electric lights and for the first time there was a telephone in the house.
Shortly after moving into this house, Leon had the misfortune that nearly cost his life and did cause the loss of full use of his right hand. While duck hunting, he dropped his gun, grabbed it with his hand just over the barrel just as it discharged and blew most of his hand away. Jefferson doctors and a Marshall surgeon worked hard trying to rebuild what was left. He retained some use of the thumb and forefinger, but it was never normal.
About this time, Leon married Constance Lothrop of Marshall. On December 30, 1918, a daughter, Constance Lothrop, was born to them. On June 18, 1922, triplets, 2 boys and a girl were born. The infant daughter, Mildred, died at birth, but the twins, Paul and Milton, survived and were a delight to the family. After graduating from Jefferson High in 1940, they joined the Air Force. Paul served as an Engineer on B-17 and was lost in action over Germany in World War II, February 4, 1943. Milton returned safely from service in the South Pacific where he was a ball turrent gunner on B-17. Milton is married to the former Imogene Maclin and lives in Jefferson. They have a daughter, Paula Jeanne born in 1949, who is married to Joe Youngblood. They have three children, Regena Ann, Joseph Darrell and Michael Paul. Milton and Imogene&rsquos son, Kim Michael was born in 1954. He received his degree from the University of Houston and is employed by Occidental Systems of Houston as a computer system analyst. Milton works as a government inspector at the Thiokol plant in Karnack. Imogene is Vice President of First National Bank in Jefferson. Leon Bass died April 2, 1961, Mildred, his second wife is still living and is secretary for the Methodist Church.
Myron Bass dropped out of college after his freshman year, working in banks in Jefferson and Wichita Falls. He returned to Southwestern and received his degree in 1922. In 1923 he married his college sweetheart, Elnora Thompson. Myron worked for his Uncle John in the Bass Bros. Dry Goods Store until it closed in 1935. That same year he started a retail shoe store and operated it until January 1966, when he retired. Their son, Frank Myron, Jr. was born in 1926 and married Annie Laura Albin. Frank is on the faculty of Perdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Their son Douglas is now in theological seminary.
Maude Estelle Bass, the last child of Mattie and Paul Bass was born in Jefferson on November 26, 1920, almost exactly twenty-three years after their first child was born. Maude married Kennard N. Davis; they had two children, Glenda Ruth and Kennard, Jr.
After she and Kennard were divorced, Maude married Theron Hilton. He was a master sergeant in charge of airplane maintenance in the Air Force and they were living in Phoenix, Arizona until their tragic death in a traffic accident August 12, 1973.
Frances Olivia Bass, born July 6, 1905 married Oscar De Vaux IV. He had several children which she helped raised, but they had no children of their own. After leaving Dallas, they bought an orange grove in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, but traded it about 20 years ago for ranch property 10 miles north of Leakey in beautiful Hill country and lived there until his death in 1966. She still lives on the property, and visits often with Myron.
John Thomas Bass born June 3, 1914 in Kenedy, he married Lona Tish Hebison. He worked for the Longview newspaper for several years before purchasing the Mt. Vernon Optic Herald. They have three daughters, DeWitta, Latisha Jane, and Patricia Ann. DeWitta and her husband, Robert Campbell operate a ranch in Mt. Vernon. Latisha Jane married Wayne Banks; they have two children and live in Plano. Patricia Ann married Robert Wright; recently they purchased several small weekly newspapers from her parents after having been associated with them for several years.
About 1941 the Perkins Brothers Company decided to close the Jefferson store which Paul Bass was still managing. He was 65 and eligible for social security but was not ready for retirement. Leon, who was working for Gamble&rsquos Men store and his father decided to go into business for themselves. They were encouraged to do so by the salesman of wholesale houses who knew their ability as dry goods merchants. It was through credit extended by them that Bass Dry Goods became a reality. The business prospered. Milton joined Paul and Leon in the business after his discharge from the Air Force in 1945. During this time the firm opened a branch store in Mineola. Leon and Milton moved there for a time and that is where Milton met Imogene. Later they closed the store and returned to Jefferson. After the death of Paul Leon Bass, Milton, Mildred and Imogene continued to operate the store with Mattie now owning Paul&rsquos share. After a few years they decided to liquidate and pay off Mattie&rsquos share. Milton and Leon decided to open a business of their own; which they called the L & M Store in 1956. After Leon&rsquos death, Milton and Mildred continued operation for a while but closed out in July 1963.
Paul and Mattie Bass never accumulated a great amount of worldly goods, but there was no family in Jefferson more respected and more highly regarded.

When Sarah married Noah I in March 1761, she brought with her an
old family Bible printed in England about 1602. She made
sure all the births, deaths and marriages were recorded on the
front blank pages. It was Sarah's family Bible with her
parents, John Smith & Rebecca Wilson, carefully
recording their marriage below the marriage of John's parents, John
Smith & Jean Shepherd. Jean was the daughter of John
Shepherd, who seems to have been the son of Lt. Thomas
Shepherd. Rebecca Wilson was the daughter of Thomas
Wilson, the son of Thomas Wilson who was the son of James
Wilson.

Jonas served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War as a member of the Virginia Line. He was a soldier in the Battle of Yorktown at Yorktown VA. According to his pension application, he enlisted as a soldier at Nancok in Accomack Co VA. He applied for his soldier's pension on 14 Apr 1834, at age 73, while living in Fayette Co TN. On 10 Apr 1855, at age 95, while living in Hardeman Co TN he applied for a Bounty Land Warrant. The pension application states that, after the Revolutionary War, Jonas lived in Stokes Co NC and in Smith, Fayette and Hardeman counties in TN.

The 1820 Census of Smith Co TN lists two Belote households, with Jonas and George listed as the heads of the two households. This George, by the age brackets given, would be George Wilson, the son of Jonas. By the 1830 Census of the same county, there were no households under the surname of Belote. The 1840 Census of Hardeman Co TN shows only one Belote household (name of head of house not given in index), but the 1850 Census shows three by that surname.

GEORGE WILSON BELOTE was born ca 1817 in Smith Co TN. He was the son of Smith Cutler Belote and Nancy Gill. George moved with his family to Fayette Co TN and eventually to Hardeman Co TN. In June of 1838 in Hardeman Co TN he married RACHEL SAWYER GLASS, the daughter of Harvey and Rebecca T. (Paul) Glass. Rachel was born 14 Apr 1820 in Lincoln Co TN. George W. Belote died between February and May on 1854 in Saulsbury, Hardeman Co TN, the place of his burial is unknown. After George's death, Rachel left Saulsbury TN and was in Marion Co TX by Aug 1854 with her parents Harvey & Rebecca (Paul) Glass. Burns was born 20 Apr 1846 in Anderson District SC, died 19 Nov 1920 and is buried beside his first wife, Louisa Carruth (Harris) Burns in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Lanier Community, Cass Co TX. Addie 3rd married JOSEPH MALCOLM "JOE" WALKER who was a brother of her 1st husband John Thomas Walker and also the son of Joel Samford & Martha Elizabeth (Tolleson) Walker. Joe was born in 1865 and died in 1947 and is buried beside his 1st wife Lucy in Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery, Cass Co TX. There were no children born of this marriage.
