Enlisted in the 9th Reg., TX Inf. (Nichols) in 1861.
After 6 mos. he joined Waul's Legion, First Battalion. He was paroled after his company surrendered at Vicksburg. He returned home & remained until he was "exchanged".
He then rejoined his command under Col. Timmons.
He is buried in the Marquez Cemetery, Leon Co., TX

Captain T. D. Nettles was in a battle won at Valverde New Mexico. Captured the Valvede Cannon. Commanding officer
wounded: Nettles promoted to Captain. Given the responsibility of bringing back the cannon. Suffered much hardship,
harsh winter, shortage of food and water. History records one instance of Nettles and his men sinking a Yankee Gunboat
in Lousiana. One of the cannon is on the Courthouse Square, Fairfield Texas. It is said to have been used in a battle at
Natchitoches La. Much Leon County Folklore that Captain Nettles shoved the rest of the cannon off into Jackson Lake on
Aligator Creek, or buried them in the vicinity. This creek heads near Jewett-runs into Buffalo Creek. Folklore also states Captain
Nettles sat down on a keg of powder, lit the fuse and blowed himself 35 feet into the air when he got news that the South had surrendered..

Nothing in history has been found to substanciate any of this folklore. His wife Virginia was my Dad's Aunt. Dad said the Captain devoted the rest of his life to planting Black Walnut trees and Increasing the size of Nettles Lake. Some of those Walnut trees
can be seen from the Nettles Cemetery now
