The Civil War devastated the lives of
many families, the Humberson
family was no exception. Andrew Welton
went away to war. He enlisted in
Texas in the Cavalry and drove a
chuck wagon. His brother George and
sister-in-law Mary Humberson attested
that Andrew Welton Humberson enlisted in
the Confederate Army from Leon Co about
1861 and served until the end of the war
– he drove a wagon team. However,
since they testified they knew he
went away to war, the
widow's application was denied stating
“this was not enough to prove he served
in the War.” Now this poor lady had
letters and more letters written on her
behalf. Let’s look at this logically:
Let’s say he joined 1862 – they married
1869 and she did not file for a pension
until 1927 --- 65 years after the fact;
and she was 71 years old. What proof
did she still have? I think she was
cheated. |
