History of First Baptist Church of Port Neches
First Baptist Church was organized in 1910 by twelve charter members led by Bro. W. L. Robertson. The first meeting was held in a one room schoolhouse at the center of town. Construction of a church building began in 1914 and was completed in 1917 on a lot donated by Mrs. E. E. Rachford. In 1918, W. H. Fortney became the first full-time pastor. During his tenure, the first frame building was sold and moved to allow construction of a new brick structure which was completed in 1927.The first trustees were: J. W. Baker, F. Marvin, W. D. Drawhorn, C. J. Gentry, Edgar White, and C. O. Stewart. On January 10, 1940, fire destroyed the church and all records were lost. A frame building was rebuilt in its place the following year and still stands at the corner of Dearing and Avenue D.In 1946, the congregation purchased property on Magnolia Avenue for $3,400 where our current facilities are located. First service in the new building was held June 10, 1957.In 1961, our congregation celebrated its fifty year anniversary in the new Magnolia location.Renovations to our auditorium were made in 1972 and our Family Life Center was completed in 1973. In the fall of 1991, the First Baptist Church Family called Dr. David Mahfouz as pastor. In February of 1992, the Church Family approved the Miracle of Ministry Remodeling Campaign and extensive renovations were carried out on the church plant. The goal was to completely remodel all existing education space, the Sanctuary and Family Life Center. Church workdays involving our entire church family became a regular event for the next few years. The Scripture written boldly on a banner stretched across the Sanctuary represents the heart of First Baptist Church. Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not (Jeremiah 33:3).
In 1999 the church family contracted with Architects Rabe and Partners to design new educational facilities and apply new roofing to our existing structures. A building committee was elected and Zack Byrd, A. L. Ainsworth, C. H. Gerald, and others stepped in to serve. This new construction added 26,000 new feet of educational space, an elevator, and many other ministry features for the church family. It was dedicated to the Glory of God in August of 2005. O sent out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hills, and to thy tabernacles (Psalms 43:3). This Scripture represents the heartbeat of the First Baptist Church of Port Neches as it approaches the celebration of its 100 years of glorious history. We welcome you into the body of believers and encourage you to share your faith with others.
