Spindletop
Bayou rises
three miles
south of Nome
in southern
Liberty County
(at 29°58' N,
94°29' W) and
runs southeast
for
twenty-three
miles,
crossing into
Chambers and
subsequently
Jefferson
counties,
before
reaching a
point in
western
Jefferson
County where
it is named
Spindletop
Ditch (29°44'
N, 94°19' W).
The latter
watercourse in
turn flows
east and south
for another
ten miles
before
reaching its
mouth on the
Gulf
Intracoastal
Waterway,qv
eighteen miles
west of Sabine
Pass (at
29°41' N,
94°13' W). In
addition to
flowing into
the irrigation
and drainage
system of
Spindletop
Ditch, the
upper stages
of Spindletop
Bayou itself
have been
altered to
increase its
potential use
by area
farmers and
residents.
Spindletop
Bayou is in
flat to
rolling
terrain with
local
escarpments.
Vegetation
consists
primarily of
loblolly pine
and sweetgum
forests in
soil composed
of deep, fine
sandy loam.
