ALBERT SIDNEY LEE
Rev.
Albert Sidney Lee of Crockett died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in a local
hospital.
Rev.
Lee was minister emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Crockett and
had lived in this city for the last 43 years. He was a vetran of World
War I, in which he served as a chaplain.
Rev.
Mr. Lee was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the
Knights of Pythias, a life member of the American Legion and an honorary
member of the Crockett Lions Club. He served as chaplain as well as
head of the civil defense in Houston County during World War II and also
as chairman of the local draft board during the same period.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church at 1 p.m.
Sunday with the Rev. E. P. Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Evergreen
Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Mary H. Lee of Crockett, three
daughters: Mrs. Dorothy Lee Power and Mrs. Elizabeth Lee Fulgham, both
of Pasadena, and Mrs. Merle Lee Sims of Bastrop; two brothers, Jack and
Pete Lee, both of Alabama; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Ralke of Panama City,
Fla; two grandchildren, Capt. George S, Gulgham of Everett, Wash. and
Mrs. C. A. Askey of Bastrop; and five great-grandchildren.

NICHOLAS OLIVER ROUTLEDGE
Mr. Nicholas Oliver Routledge, 89, retired farmer and rancher of Crockett, died in a local hospital Saturday, Oct. 24, 1964
following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct 26, from the Callaway Memorial Chapel with Rev. E. Jewel Strong, Methodist
minister of Crockett, officiating.
Interment was in the Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett, and pallbearers were O. R. (Hop) Robinson, D. H. Arnold, Hayne Morrow,
Walter Bear, John Bear, and Roland Bear.
Born on July 24, 1875, in Dunkirk, Ind., Mr. Routledge was a member of the Methodist church. He moved to Texas and Houston
County in 1907 and had lived here since that time. He was a member of the Davy Crockett Lodge 193, Knights of Pythias.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hanna Routledge of Crockett; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Riviere of Crockett, Mrs. Blanche Harrison
of Houston, and Mrs. Georgia Moose of Oklahoma City; two sons, John of Crockett, Jim of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, George, of Dayton,
Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. David Hodges of Indianapolis, Mrs. Ben Knoth of Bradford, Ohio, and Mrs. Ralph Wright of Tallahassee, Fla; two
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Callaway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

L. L. "Ollie" Dykes
Mr. O. L. "Ollie" Dykes, 80, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, in
the Houston County Hospital. Mr. Dykes, a retired rancher and farmer, was
a member of the Baptist church. He was a veteran of WW I and a member of
the American Legion.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 2:30 p.m. in the Waller
Chapel with Rev. E. P. Ramsey officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen
Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Billie Saxon of Crockett; two sisters,
Miss Bonnie Dykes and Mrs. Maud English, both of Trinity; one grandchild.

Mrs. Ida May Eardley
Mrs. Ida May Eardley, 76, died Monday at the family home near Trinity,
following an extended illness. She was born March 20, 1885, in Bonn County,
Ill., and was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, with Rev. C. A. West, pastor of the First Methodist Church of
Crockett, officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Adkin Spain, Mutt Knox, John Bear, Alvis Story, T. E.
Dawson and Bill Blalock.
Survivors include the husband, William Eardley of Trinity; one son, Wilbur
Eardley of Trinity; one daughter, Mrs. J. Mack Hurtt of Houston; one
granddaughter, Mrs. W. M. Armstrong of El Paso; and five
great-grandchildren.

Walter Wilbur Eardley
Mr. Walter Wilbur Eardley, 60, retired farmer and construction worker of
Trinity, died at his home after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 18, with Carl Allen, minister of the Crockett Church of
Christ, officiating. Burial was in the Rice Cemetery, and pallbearers were
Keith Hobson, Dude Dawson, Lee Beavers, Adkin Spain, C. F. Cook, and
Benford Frizzell.
Mr. Eardley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Eardley of Trinity; a
daughter, Mrs. W. M. Armstrong of El Paso; a sister, Mrs. Syble Eardley
Hurtt of Houston; father, William Eardely of Trinity; and six
greandchildren.
Born on Oct 2, 1900, in Old Ripley, Illinois, Mr. Eardley was a member of
the Church of Christ.

John E. Easton
Mr. John E. Easton, 73, of Lovelady, died Saturday in a Madisonville
hospital of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Easton, a veteran of World War I, was born April 2, 1895, in Eastland
County, Captain John, as he was affectionaly known to all, was a retired
employee of the Texas Department of Corrections, and had served as warden
of the Eastham, Blue Ridge and Darrington Prison Farms. He had resided in
Lovelady and Houston County since 1934.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with Mr. M. E. Gimon of Lovelady officiating. Burial was in
Evergreen Cemetery at Lovealdy.
Pallbearers were Cecil Roe, W. T. Bruton, John Paul Stewart, Harold Stone,
Atmar Turner and H. T. Deaton.
Survivors include two sons, Foye and Jack Easton, both of Lovelady; a
sister, Mrs. Lizzie Steele of Bryan; and three grandchildren.

Henry Hager Eaves
Mr. Henry Hager Eaves, 81, of Apple Springs died Thursday afternoon, Sept.
20, in a Trinity hospital. A lifelong resident of Trinity County, he was a
member of the Baptist church.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Apple Springs
Baptist Church,, Rev. Arnold McBride and Rev. Morris Fletcher officiating.
Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Cora Eaves of Apple Springs; two sons,
Hager Eaves of Florida and Leon Eaves of Kennard; a daughter, Mrs. J. W.
Doyle of Weldon; six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Miss Alice May Eddy
Miss Alice May Eddy, 82, of Crockett, died Tuesday in the Houston County
Nursing Home.
Miss Eddy, born Jan. 3, 1883, in Wisconsin, had lived in this county for
about 60 years. She formerly taught school in Wisconsin, and was a member
of the Porter Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held in the porter Springs Baptist Church at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, with Rev. Jack Edwards and Rev. Edgar Dodd officiating. Burial
was in the Porter Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roland Murray, E. R. Breton, Mike Lansford, Martin
Lansford, John Spinks and Mack Shipp.
Survivors include a number of cousins.

Wife is Charged in Husband's Death
Murder charges were filed Wednesday morning against Mrs. Myrtle Edens, 59,
of Route 1, Elkhart, in the shooting death of her husband, Jim Hogg Edens,
63.
According to Sheriff J. B. Lively, the shooting occurred shortly after 5 AM
Wednesday. He said Deputy Sheriff George Cheatman in Grapeland received a
phone call from Mrs. Edens about 5:20 AM saying she had shot her husband and
was jumping into the water well at the residence.
Sherrif Lively related that Cheatman called him and he instructed him to
call an ambulance and proceed to the Edens farm, located in Houston County
north west of Grapeland on the old Elkhart road.
Cheatman called Hassell and Foster for an ambulance and the fire alarm was
sounded for firemen to accompany them to recover Mrs. Edens from the well.
Volunteer fireman assisted in removing Mrs. Edens from the well and she was
returned to Community Memorial Hospital where she was placed in custody and
under a 24 hour guard.
Sheriff Lively stated that her husband was killed by two bullets fired from
a .38 caliber pistol. He added that she would be carried before a judge or
justice of peace for formal arraignment, exact time depending upon her
condition.
The sheriff also stated that two notes were left by Mrs. Edens, but
contents were not disclosed.
Funeral services for Jim Hogg Edens, 63, of Route 1, Elkhart, will be held
Thursday, March 31, at 3 PM in the First Baptist church, Grapeland, with
Rev. J. T. Riley officiating. Burial will be in the Antrim Cemetery.
Mr. Edens was born in Houston County October 39, 1902, and was a son of the
late Albert Newton Edens and Mrs. Fannie Belle Furnell Edens, both of
Houston county. He was a member of the First Baptist church and Grapeland
Masonic Lodge No. 473. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the Humble Oil
Company.
Survivors; wife; daughter, Mrs. Carrie Frances King of Grapeland; brother,
Frank N. Edens of Ruston; two sisters, Mrs. Allie (Emma Charm) Little of
Baytown and Mrs. Merle Isaac of Houston, two grandchildren, Frank Stevens
King and Miss Carrie Susan King.
Remains will be at Hassell & Foster.

Jim Hogg Edens
Funeral services for Mr. Jim Hogg Edens, 63, of Rt. 1, Elkhart (Antrim
Community), were held Thursday, March 31, at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist
Church of Grapeland, with Rev. J. T. Riley officiating. Burial was in the
Antrim Cemetery, northwest of Grapeland.
Mr. Edens was born in Houston County on October 30, 1902, and died
Wednesday (March 30) at his home. Son of the late Albert Newton Edens and
Mrs. Fannie Bell Durnell Edens, he as a member of First Baptist Church,
Gapeland and Grapeland Masonic Lodge No. 473. Former resident of Ingleside
and Baytown, he was employed by Humble Oil Company before retiring. Also he
was a rancher.
Survivors: wife, Mrs. Myrtle Brown Edens of Rt. 1 Elkhart; one daughter,
Mrs. Carrie Frances King of Grapeland; one brother, Frank N. Edens of
Ruston, Louisiana; two sisters, Mrs. Allie Little of Baytown and Mrs. Ralph
Isaac of Houston; two grandchildren, Frank Stevens King and Mrs. Carrie
Susan King.

Thomas Edward Edge
Funeral services for Thomas Edward Edge, age 84, of Grapeland were held
Monday (Oct 29) in the First Baptist Church of Grapeland at 2 P.M. Rev.
Bland Kerby and Rev. W. H. Wieting officiated and burial was in the
Grapeland City cemetery with Masons in charge at the graveside.
Pallbearers were Barnett Jordan, Ira Rails, Leon Anderson, Jack Story, J.
K. Dailey, Arthur Walton, Leland Herod and Warren Baker.
Mr. Edge died Oct. 27 following a long illness in a Jacksonville hospital.
He was born in Houston county on September 29, 1878 and was a farmer and
rancher. Mr. Edge was a member of the Grapeland Masonic Lodge and a member
of the Woodmen of the World.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Flora Edge of Grapeland; three sons, Grady
Edge of Grapeland, L. C. Edge of Houston, Floyd Edge of Pasadena; two
daughters, Mrs. J. W. Powell of Nineveh, Mrs. Grady Sheridan of
Jacksonville; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren.

Mrs. Zmena Alice Harmon Edge
Funeral services for Grady Edward Edge Sr., 70, and his wife, Mrs. Zmena
Alice Harmon Edge, 69, of Rt. 3, Grapeland, were held Sunday, March 8, at 2
p.m. in the Sunset Christian Church, Grapeland, with the Rev. Gene Simon
officiating. Burial was in the Davis Cemetery, east of Grapeland, under the
direction of Hassell & Foster.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Edge were killed in a car-truck accident Thursday, March
5, at Zephyr, 11 miles east of Brownwood, Highway #84, while erroute to
visit a sick sister of Mrs. Edge, who lived in McCamey. Members of Sunset
Christian Church, both were lifelong residents of Grapeland, where Mr. Edge
was a farmer and carpenter.
Mr. Edge was born Sept, 16, 1899 in Grapeland to Mrs. Flora Garrett Edge
and the late Ed Edge, and Mrs. Edge was born Dec. 13, 1900 to the late Ed
Harmon and Mrs. Lila Walton Harmon.
They are survived by two sons, Grady Edge Jr., of Grapeland, and Harmon
Edge of Lubbock; and four grandchildren.
Survivors of Mr. Edge include his mother, Mrs. Ed (Flora) Edge of Trinity;
a brother, Rev. Lawson C. Edge of Grapeland; two sisters, Mrs. Johnny
(Annie) Powell of Nineveh, and Mrs. Grady (Mary) Sheridan of Trinity.
Mrs. Edge is also survived by a sister, Mrs. J. T. Thetford of McCamey.

Mrs. Flora Edge
Funeral services for Mrs. Flora Edge, 92, of Trinity, longtime Grapeland
resident were held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church,
Grapeland, with the Rev. Kenneth Mobley and the Rev. Kenneth Pries
officiating. Burial was in the Grapeland City Cemetery under the direction
of Hassell & Foster.
Pallbearers were the following grandsons; Grady Edge, Jr., Harmon Edge,
Jimmy Powell, Charles Edge, Tommy Sheridan, Bill Huff, Don Burke and Zane
Richburg.
Mrs. Edge was born April 29, 1882 in Grapeland to the late Frank Garrett
and Nannie Matthews Garrett, and she died Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in a
Crockett nursing home following a long illness. Resident of Grapeland most
of her life, she was a member of the First Christian Church, and the widow
of Thomas Edward Edge, Grapeland farmer and rancher, who preceded her in
death on October 27, 1962.
Survivors; a son, L. C. Edge, Grapeland; two daughters, Mrs. J. W. (Annie)
Powell of Buffalo, and Mrs. Grady (Mary) Sheridan of Trinity; two
half-brothers, Lewis Garrett of Grapeland and Hayden Garrett of
Nacogdoches; two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Smith of Grapeland, and Mrs. Linnie
Snell of Houston; 18 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 12 great great
grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Two son, Floyd and Grady Edge, preceded her in death.

Mr. Bennett E. Edwards, 45, of Center, died Monday morning near Bastrop.
Mr. Edwards was a member of the Northside Baptist Church in Center.
He was a member of Lathrop Lodge No. 21 of Crockett.

Cemetery, with Rev. Earl Moore and Rev. R. J. Rodgers officiating.

Mr. Gustave A. Eklund, 73, of Star Rt., Lovelady, died Sunday evening in a
local hospital.
Mr. Eklund was born in New York, but had been a resident of Houston County
for the last 11 years. He was a retired captain in the U.S.M.C., and was a
member of the Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Creek Baptist
Church, with Rev. Walter Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Creek
Cemetery.

Mr. F. L. Elkins, 71, died at his home at 3014 University Blvd, in Houston,
on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Mr. Elkins was reared in Lovelady, but had lived in Houston since 1918.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday from the Settegast-Kopf Funeral
Home in Houston.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Weta Mae Elkins of Houston; a daughter,

Mrs. Annie Eliza Elkins, 90, of Crockett, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, in a
local hospital.
Mrs. Elkins was born in Texas Jan. 6, 1878, and had been a resident of
Houston County for 68 y4ears. She was a member of the First Church of
Christ Scientist of Boston, Mass.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 10:30 a.m.
Friday, with Rev. E. P. Ramsey of the First Baptist Church and Rev. L. B.
Boadh of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett.

Survivors include a son, a daughter, Mrs. B. O. Perdue of Crockett; three

Mr. George W. Elliott, 41, of Lovelady, died Monday, Jan. 30, at his home.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his mother, Mrs. Minnie Elliott of Creek; four
brothers, Edgar of Crockett, M. G. and John of Austonio, and Fred of South
Houston; two sisters, Mrs. R. V. Dyches of Crockett and Mrs. J. D. Standley
of Houston.

Creek Cemetery, with the Rev. A. S. Higginbotham officiating.

Mrs. Luella Elliott
Funeral services for Mrs. Luella Elliott, 80, of Rt. 1, Percilla, were held

A native and lifelong resident of Houston county, Mrs. Elliott was born
Nov. 29, 1882, daughter of the late Jackson McKinzie and Mrs. Janie
Sullivan McKinzie. She was the widow of B. E. Elliott, who died in
February, 1950.
Member of the Methodist church, she died Monday at 11:20 p.m. at her home
following an illness of several months.
Survivors include two sons, Elbridge (Pete) Elliott of Palestine and Earl
of Percilla; three daughters, Mrs. Erma Lou Bishop of Palestine, Mrs.
Eleanor Frix and Mrs. Edythe Wagstaff, both of Percilla; a brother,
Marshall McKinzie of Grapeland, four grandchildren, Don Bishop and Miss
Joan Bishop, both of Palestine; a brother, Marshall McKinzie of Grapeland,
four grandchildren Don Bishop and Miss Joan Bishop, both of Palestine,
James Earl Elliott and Jerry Lynn Elliott, both of Percilla; a great

Preston Olney Lively
and
Jess E. Elliott
The body of Preston Olney Lively, 49, was discovered early Monday morning
beside the Missouri Pacific railroad tracks north of the depot here.
Webb Finch, justice of peace, said Lively's death was accidental. He is
believed to have been struck down by a passing train.
The body was discovered by J. D. Wallace between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. He
notified Olan Davis, county commissioner, who resides near the scene where
the body was found.
A watch which Lively was wearing had stopped at 12:05 but Davis said he
apparently had not been dead that long.
Bruises were on Lively's head, back and an arm was badly bruised.
Lively's grandfather, Jess E. Elliott, 85, a retired Percilla farmer, died
Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ed Buller in Crockett, and double
funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon.
Rev. W. H. Weiting and Rev. C. A. West officiated at the services at the
Percilla Methodist church and burial was in the Evergreen cemetery.
Pallbearers for Mr. Elliott were T. H. Buller, Elbridge Elliott, Leonard
Barnes, Stan Stanley, Sam Muckleroy and Willie Hayne Knox.
Pallbearers for Mr. Lively wre L. H. Brown, W. A. Brown, Joe Black, Preston
Gerald Lively, John A. Brimberry and Leland Herod.
Mr. Elliott was born in Houston county Feb. 9, 1875. He is survived by his
widow, Mrs. Maggie Elliott of Percilla; two sons, Marvin and Sam Elliott,
both of Percilla; two daughters, Mrs. Ed Buller of Crockett and Mrs. Vella
Whitaker of Grapeland; 13 greandchildren.
Mr. Lively was born in Houston County Aug. 14, 1910. He is survived by his
mother, Mrs. Vella Whitaker of Grapeland; two daughters, Mrs. Vella Clark
of Mesquite and Mrs. Jessie Elmore of Dallas; three brothers, Orville
Lively of Grapeland, Louie Lively of Carthage and Artie Lively of Percilla,
a sister, Mrs. Winifred Barnes of Grapeland; grandmother, Mrs. Maggie
Elliott of Percilla; four half-brothers, William L. Whitaker of Houston,
Leon Whitaker of Temple, Mayo Whitaker of Arizona and Elliott Whitaker of

Pvt. Jerry Lynn Elliott
Funeral services for Private Jerry Lynn Elliott, 20, of Rt. 3, Grapeland
were held Monday, July 4, at 3 p.m. in the Evergreen Chapel, Percilla, with
Rev. W. H. Wieting and Rev. J. T. Riley officiating. Burial was in the
Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dewayne Newman, C. W. Cherry, Don Lively, Guinn Lively,
Jerry Daniels, Jim McKenzie, Tommy Byrd, and Sammy Cherry.
Private Elliott was born in Houston County on December 8, 1945, and was
pronounced dead on arrival Sunday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at a Grapeland
hospital, following injuries received in a car accident five miles east of
Grapeland. A 1965 graduate of Grapeland High School, he was stationed at
Camp Pendleton, in Oceanside, California.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Earl Elliott of Percilla; a

Mrs. Agnes Leona Elliott, 77, of Lovelady, died early Monday morning at her
home.
Mrs. Elliott was a lifelong resident of Houston County, and a member of the
Antioch Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Antioch Baptist Church,
with Rev. R. J. Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery.
Survivors include the husband, Sam C. Elliott of Lovelady; two sons, Earl
and Claude Elliott, both of Pasadena; a daughter, Mrs. Dola Evans of
Houston; a brother L. e. Hart of Lovelady; six grandchildren; 14 great
grandchildren.

Mr. Porter Bryan Ellis, 67, retired farmer of Crockett, died in a Crockett
hospital Sunday, Jan. 2, following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan 4, with the Reverends Don Austin and Floyd Hughes officiating.
Interment was in the English Cemetery, and pallbearers wre Charles
Coaliron, Lloyd Turner, Porter Ellis, A. R. Linder, T. W. Zirlott, and
Freddie Ray Gilbreath.
Born June 15, 1898, in Groveton, Mr. Ellis was a member of the Crockett
Church of God. He had lived in Crockett and Houston County most of his
life.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Mary Bell Ellis of Crockett; six daughters,
Mrs. Lorene Rhone and Mrs. Hazel Martin of Houston, Mrs. Laverne Ball and
Mrs. Clara Hearn of Crockett, Mrs. Lucille Linder of Alburquerque, N. M.;
and Mrs. Ruth Whitehead of Grapeland; five sons, Hollis, Lonnie and Lacy
all of Crockett, Walter of Freeport, and J. L. of Wilmer; a brother Wert
Edward of Arlington; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Wagley of Modesto, Calif.,
Mrs. Matty Harvey of Emory, Mrs. Willie Day of Arlington and Mrs. Sallie
Walker of Dallas; 41 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Erin Leigh Ellis, one year old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Bobby Ellis of 614 Sulphur, Houston were held June 10 at 2 p.m. in the

Mrs. Mabel Olivia Ellis, 83-year-old former resident of Crockett, died in a
San Antonio nursing home Monday, Dec. 20.
Born on Nov. 22, 1880, in Georgetown, Mrs. Ellis had lived in Crockett for
a number of years before moving to San Antonio about 38, years ago. She was
a member of the Travis Park Methodist Church of San Antonio.
Graveside services were held at the Glenwood Cemetery in Crockett at 11:30
a.m. Wednesday, Jan 1, with the Rev. Andrew Byers, Presbyterian minister of
Crockett, officiating.
Mrs. Ellis is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George Thurmond of San Antonio;
two sons, Carl of Corpus Christi, and Joe of Ft. Worth; a brother, Guy
Givins of Austin; four grandchildren;and one great grandchild.

for 27 years and attended the Baptist Church.

Mr. Tommy Allee, age 80 of Crockett, passed
away Sunday, September 12, 2004 in the East Texas
Medical Cen-ter-Crockett. Mr. Allee was born May 1, 1924
in Austonio and had lived in Crockett most of his
lifetime. Mr. Allee was owner and operator of Allee’s
Jewelry for 48 years before retiring in 1997. Mr. Allee
served two terms as a director of the Texas Jewelers
Association. Mr. Allee was a veteran of the U.S. Army
serving World War II and the U.S. Navy serving in the
Korean Conflict. Mr. Allee was a 50 year member of the
Lothrop Masonic Lodge and was a member of the First
Baptist Church and the A.S. Lee Sunday School Class.

Mr. Leon
Thomas, age 74, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday,
September 12, 2004. Mr. Thomas was born February 27,
1930 in Houston County to Bryan and Jasper Thomas.
Mr. Thomas served in the U.S. Air Force during Korean
War and later became a barber and worked as an
insur-ance agent and staff manager for a major insurance
company. At an early age Mr. Thomas played the steel
guitar professionally. Mr. Thomas’s first love was his
Savior, Jesus Christ. Mr. Thomas encouraged others
through his faith and looked forward to the day he would
see his Savior.
Mr. Thomas was a devoted husband to his wife, Nelda June
Thomas and a wonderful father to three children, Lorri
Baack, Daniel Stockton and Dawn Baker Bledsoe.
Survivors include his wife Nelda June Thomas, of Conroe;
two daughters Lorri Baack and husband Ronnie, of
Palestine, Dawn Bledsoe and husband Vernell, of Tulsa;

Mrs. Wilda
Jaunice Cunningham, age 63 of Grapeland, surrounded by
her family on September 1, 2004 departed this world to
live in glory with our Lord. Mrs. Cunningham was born on
March 21, 1941 in Lampasas to Harvey Simon and Reba
Fretwell. Mrs. Cunningham was very in raising her
children and was always involved in their ac-tivities,
including working in the office at Grapeland ISD, while
they were in school, helping with FFA projects, working
on pageants, cheering her son at football games and
rooting for her daughter twirling competitions. On her
own, she operated a dress shop in Crockett, fitted
glasses for many community residents at the East Texas
Eye Clinic and worked at the county court house in
Crockett.
Mrs. Cunningham greatest pride and joy, however, has
been her beautiful grandchildren. Recently when she felt
too tired to share this life with others, she turned and
found strength in Justin, Jared, Jayde and Jessie. They
brought light back to her eyes and love to her heart.
Mrs. Wilda was a strong woman with deep ties in the East
Texas communities of Grapeland and Crockett. Mrs.
Cunningham moved to Grapeland to be a homemaker and
raise two beautiful children, Teresa Westbrook and Glen
Cunningham, whom she was very proud of and loved deeply.
Mrs. Cunningham will greatly be missed.

brother Charles Simon and wife Barbara, of Lampa-sas;
three sisters Melissa Casbeer and husband george, of San
Antonio, Sue Ellen Samuels and husband Bob, of Alice and

Mr. Billy Rueben Kyle, age 73 of Pasadena,
passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004 in the Methodist
Hospital in Houston. Mr. Kyle was born September 6, 1930
in Pearson Chapel and had lived in Pasadena most of his
lifetime. Mr. Kyle was a veteran of the U.S. Army having
served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Kyle retired from
Grey-hound Bus Lines where he worked as a baggage
coordinator and was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette Kyle, of Pasadena;
nieces and nephews Gloria Hahn, of Baytown, Charles
Vance, of Pasadena, Peggy Reed, of Spring, Glen Vance,
Kay McCrary, both of Pasadena, Tommy Kyle, of Hunts-ville,
Betty Beavers, of Irving and Paul Kyle, of Arkansas;
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law John Page, of
Pasa-dena, Jack and Raylene Ford, Floyd and Janelle
Atkinson, all of Baytown; mother-in-law Donna Ford, of
Baytown; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and other
relatives.
Preceded in death by his parents Rueben and Lillie Kyle;
brothers Melvin Kyle and Robbie Kyle; sister Eva Kyle
Page; and father-in-law Jack Ford.
Funeral services for Mr. Billy Rueben Kyle were held
Tuesday, July 6, at 2:30 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Me-morial
Chapel with the Rev. Scott Matthews officiating.

Mr. Milton Earl
Thomas, age 87 of Crockett, passed away Monday, August
23, 2004 of natural causes in Crock-ett. Mr. Thomas was
born June 7, 1917 in Blairstown, Missouri. Mr. Thomas’s
family moved to Houston when he was two years of age.
Mr. Thomas was a long time resident of Bellaire until
his retirement to Crockett in 1991.
Mr. Thomas graduated from Milby High School, and
attended business school in Houston, and then began his
long career in country club management.
Mr. Thomas’s happiest years were the 21 years at Brae
Burn Country Club. Mr. Thomas also managed Pine For-est
Country Club, Memorial Drive Country Club, and the Onion
Creek Club in Austin. After his retirement, he spent 15
years as assistant manager of the Briar Club in Houston
where he made many friends and had happy memories.
Mr. Thomas was a member of First Baptist Church of
Crockett and was a charter member of Park Memorial Bap-tist
Church in Houston. Mr. Thomas was a 50-year member of
Reagan Masonic Lodge #1037 in Houston.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Rachel Garrett
Thomas; sons Howard Michael Thomas, of Crockett and
Dennis Thomas and wife Teresa, of Pine Island;
grandchildren Taylor Matthew and Rachel Anna Thomas, of
Pine Island; nieces Dorothy Moy and husband John, of
Pasadena, Marie Glenn and husband J.L., of Sealy and
Yvonne Pickering, of Ala.; Garrett in-laws Laura
Garrett, of Houston, Wessie and Howard Ellison, of Pine
Island, Christine Ayers, of Houston, and Ray and Leona
Garrett, of Pine Island; as well as many nieces and
nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, August
25, at 1:30 p.m. Following the service there was a re-ception
for family and friends at the Briar Club.

Mr. Willie O. (Jack)
Gilford, age 81, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004. Mr.
Gilford was born October 16, 1922 in the Cedar Branch
Community in Grapeland to Odie and Amie Gilford.
Mr. Gilford accepted Christ at an early age at Cedar
Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Gilford graduated from
Crockett High School and attended Texas Southern
University.
Mr. Gilford was a sergeant in the United States Army
during World War II. After proudly serving his country,
he married Cuba Robertson.
Mr. Gilford was the father of two daughters Addie and
Eloise and two sons Willie R. and Albert. Mr. Gilfford
was the owner and operator of Willie Transfer Moving
Company until his health failed. Mr. Gilford later
united at Christian Hope under the leadership of Rev.
Stroman.
Survivors include his wife Cuba Gilford; two daughters
Addie (Henry), Eliosel (Rev. C.T. Shelly); and son Al-bert;
five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two
brothers James (Pearlie) Gilford, Tgree Gilford, of Los
Ange-les, Calif.; and one sister Iva Lee Taylor, of
Houston.
Preceded in death by his father and mother Odie and Amie
Gilford; two brothers Herman and Wilbert Gilford; one
sister Florence Cook; one son Willie Romieus Gilford.

held Saturday, August 14, at 12:00 p.m. at Cullen
Mis-sionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert C.
Jefferson and the Rev. C.T. Shelly officiating.

Mr. John David Ward,
Jr., age 68, passed away Friday, August 13, 2004. Mr.
Ward was born April 3, 1936 in the Wheeler Springs
Community he was the third child of the late Rosezena
Denson and Artye King Ward.
After graduating in the 1954 class of Ralph Bunche High
School. Mr. Ward enlisted in the United States Air Force
and served his country for eight years. Mr. Ward
received an honorable discharge and thereafter gained
em-ployment with TSTI in Houston and remained for 15
years. Mr. Ward returned home to Crockett and gained
em-ployment with the Texas Youth Commission where he
worked for ten years and retired in 2000.
Survivors include his three sons Phillip Ward (Sandra),
of Diboll, John Ward, Jr. (Shelia) and Artye Ward (Alonda),
all of Marlin; one daughter Debra Collins (Luzene), of
Crockett; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two
sisters LaNora Smith (Conell), of Texarkana and
Elizabeth Strange, of Crockett; sisters-in-law Dorthy
Evans (James), of Crockett and Ruby Ward, of Calif.;
special niece Linda Warfield, of Crockett; and a –very
special cousin Freddie Marcelous, of Houston; and a host
of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his wife Carrie Ward; brother Artye
Ward, Jr.; and one son David Ward.

Archie B. the youngest daughter, was born to
the union of Tom and Josephine Lovelady, on December 5,
1914, all of her 5 siblings preceded her in death. She
grew up in the Hopewell Community and was educated at
the Gludeby School.
She joined Hopewell Baptist Church under the leadership
of Rev. Alfred Reece. Later she joined Mt. Olive Bap-tist
Church under the leadership of Rev. A. C. Harris and now
Rev. Lavern Gambrell. She was an active member of the
church until her death. She thoroughly enjoyed quilting
and sewing.
In 1935 she married the late Sylvester “Butcher” Watson
with 13 children born to this union. Life’s departure
was on August 3, 2004 in a Palestine hospital. Survivors
are: 8 children; 5 children preceded her in death,
Gennetta Johnson of Grapeland, Mamie Hinton, Hattie Faye
Hamilton, Eunice Hobbs of Houston, Dorothy Burnett and
hus-band Curly of Los Angeles, Charlie Watson and wife
Deanne, Alvin Watson and wife Sharon of Houston, Calvin
Watson and wife Dorothy of Crockett, daughter in law;
Willie Pearl Watson of Houston, 26 grandchildren, 31

Koontz, age 86 of Grapeland, passed away Tuesday, August
17, 2004 in the Grapeland Nursing Home. Mrs. Koontz was
born July 26, 1918 in Springville, Indiana to Clarence
Kirkman and Clara Wright Kirk-man. Mrs. Koontz was a
homemaker and was a member of the Assembly of God
Church.
Survivors include her husband Richard Koontz, of

Williams, Jr., age 76 of Oyster Creek, passed away
Saturday, April 14, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Wil-liams
was born December 18, 1927 in Linwood. Mr. Williams
moved to Ratcliff at age nine where he grew up and moved
to Lake Jackson area in 1953.
Mr. Williams served in the Army in Japan and Germany
right after World War II ended then he joined the Mer-chant
Marines. Mr. Williams was a retiree from Dow Chemical
where he worked in the Motor Transportation De-partment.
Mr. Williams was an outgoing man and loved to go to town
and talk to people. Mr. Williams attended the First
Assembly of God Church in Clute for many years. After
his wife died, he attended church with his daughter
Margaret at First Assembly of God in Lake Jackson.
Survivors include his two sons Ronnie Williams and wife
Terri, of Ratcliff, Gary Williams, of Angleton; three
daughters Linda Jo Warren and husband Mike, of El
Dorado, Ark., Janet Hardwick and husband Gary Lee, of
Texas City and Margaret Westergaard and husband Milton,
Jr., of Clute; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
and numerous other relatives.

Mrs. Ethel
Nettles Marks, age 95 of Crockett, passed away Friday,
August 13, 2004 in the Whitehall Nursing Center. Mrs.
Marks was born March 10, 1909 in Creek and had lived in
Houston the early part of her lifetime and later moved
to Crockett in 1968.
Mrs. Marks attended Sam Houston State Teacher College in
Huntsville. Mrs. Marks joined Georgia Camp Baptist
Church at an early age and after marrying Howard W.
Marks in November 20, 1929 moved to Houston and was
affiliated with Park Temple as choir director. Mrs.
Marks was very active in gospel singing beginning at a
very young age until her death, singing with many
quartets including the Nettles Sisters Quartet.
Mrs. Marks was currently a member of the Central Baptist
Church and the Esther Sunday School Class. Mrs. Marks
was Most Excellent Chief of the Phythian Sisters #15 and
Past Worthy Matron of the Crockett Order of the Eastern
Star #509. Mrs. Marks had worked as a saleperson for
major Houston department stores but most of all was a
wonderful homemaker, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and aunt. In her retirement years she
worked at the Crockett Senior Citizens Center for over
13 years delivering food to the other centers in the
county and driving the Senior Citizens bus until she was
80 years old.
Survivors include her son Herman Marks and wife Marie,
of New Iberia, La.; daughter Gene M. Catoe and hus-band
Willis, of Grants, N.M.; daughter-in-law Diane Graham,
of Crockett; grandchildren Kathy Romero and hus-band
Lynn, of New Iberia, La., Colleen Formby, of Maryland,
Ginger Kilgore and husband John, of Kemp, Lori Brundrett,
of Spring, Paul W. Diedrich and wife Sarah, of Leander;
eight great-grandchildren; sister Augusta McCullar, of
Crockett; 21 nieces and nephews; 75 great nieces and
great nephews; and a host of other relatives and
friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Howard W. Marks on
August 3, 1995; son James H. (Jimmy) Marks on July 26,

Thursday, August 12, 2004 in the East Texas Medical
Center-Tyler. Mr. Johnson was born September 15, 1928 in
Wesley Chapel and had lived in Houston County most of
his lifetime. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of the U.S. Army
and U.S. Air Force having served during World War II.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the American Legion
Brailsford English Post #134 and was also a member of
the Church of God. Mr. Johnson was retired from Western
Electric where he worked as a switch board technician.
Survivors include his brothers Edgar F. Johnson and wife
Lequanna and Durwood Johnson and wife Patsy, all of
Wesley Chapel; sister Henrietta McFall, of Wesley
Chapel; sister-in-law Hazel Johnson, of Crockett;

Simmons, age 79 of Lovelady, passed away Friday, August
13, 2004 in the Palestine Regional Medical Center. Mrs.
Simmons was born March 14, 1925 in Westlake, Louisiana
and had lived in Lovelady for the past 22 years. Mrs.
Simmons was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star
#969 in Weldon and was also a mem-ber of the First
United Methodist Church in Lovelady. Mrs. Simmons
retired as a dietician and had worked for the Rosewood
General Hospital.

Mr. William Howard
Taft (W.T.) McDaniel, age 78, passed from labor to rest
on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the Baptist Hospital in
Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. McDaniel was born on March 2,
1926 in Grapeland and was the only child of the late
Mrs. Eliza McDaniel Daham.
Mr. McDaniel attended public schools in Grapeland. Mr.
McDaniel confessed his hope and faith in Christ at an
early age and attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church while
in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Mr. McDaniel served his country in World War II as a
Seaman 1st Class in the Navy and was stationed in
Hawaii. Mr. McDaniel received an honorable discharge and
returned to Grapeland 1946, and soon moved to Houston
where he was employed by San Ore Gardner Engineering,
where he worked as a pile driver for 39 years. Mr.
McDaniel was transferred to DeWitt, Arkansas to work on
the Arkansas River Navigation Project in 1964. In 1965
he was transferred to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to work on
Lock and Dam #4.
Mr. McDaniel met and married Bernice Johnson Middletown
on March 29, 1970. After his retirement in 1998 from San
Ore Gardner Engineering, he helped build Warehouse Foods
and was employed by Jitney Jungle Foods Chain at Mega
Market in Jefferson Square, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas
where he had many friends.
Survivors include his loving wife Bernice Johnson
Middleton McDaniel; one son Michael McDaniel, of
Houston; nine step-children whom he helped to rear,
Colonel Danny L. Johnson, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Diane
Jones, of Sacre-mento, Calif., Angela R. Betton (Dr. H.B.
Betton), of Little Rock, Ark., CeCelia A. Johnson, of
Renton, Wash., Karen M. Williams, of Pine Bluff, Ark.,
Estrallta D. Smith, of Little Rock, Ark., Myron N.

Carol Wantuck, age 71 of Bryan, passed away Monday,
August 9, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Wan-tuck was born
July 28, 1933 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mrs. Wantuck had lived
in Bryan since December 2001. Mrs. Wantuck retired in
2001 as Office Manager with the Houston County Courier
Newspaper in Crockett and was a member of St. Luke’s

Mrs. Rosalie
Blevins, age 78 of Crockett, passed gently from the arms
of her family to the arms of her Heavenly Father on
Tuesday, August 10, 2004.
Mrs. Blevins had been a Crockett resident for over 24
years. A member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Mrs.
Ble-vins served as associate editor of the newsletter,
director of the resale shop, member of the Altar Guild
and Church treasurer/secretary. Mrs. Blevins was an
active member of Crockett Chapter 509, Order of the
Eastern Star, where she served as teasurer and was a
past matron and deputy.
Survivors include her beloved husband William Blevins;
son Michael Quarterman and wife Lilly, of Houston;
daughter Cindy Bloschies and husband Herbert, of
Houston; grandchildren Sara and Jessica Quarterman,
Kelly McMillan and Scott and Brooke McMillan, all of

Oil-field industry and a World War II Army Veteran and
served in the Normandy Invasion.

was a housewife and a member of the Truth Tabernacle

Livingston, age 76, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2004
in Crockett. Mrs. Livingston was born January 13, 1928
in Lovelady to the proud parentage of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Roberts, she was affectionately given the
nickname, “Ted.”
Mrs. Livingston became a member of the Church of Christ
in Lovelady at an early age and remained a faithful
member. Mrs. Livingston united in Matrimony to Vertis
Livingston of Lovelady on December 3, 1951. Mrs.
Livingston left our home but not our hearts.
Survivors include her devoted sisters Jewel Baker, of
Lovelady, Maggie Sheppard, Johnett Lane and Pauline
Fisher, all of Houston; a host of nieces, nephews and
other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Vertis Livingston;
parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roberts; two sisters Ethel
Livingston of Lovelady and Ora Lee Williams of Houston;

after fighting a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Huffman

Hill. Mrs. Huffman worked for T.D.C. and Crockett State
School before retiring.

Mr. Isang
Martin Essien, age 23, passed away July 23, 2004. Mr.
Essien was born in Houston, he was the oldest son of
Martin and Victoria Essien and the brother of Earlie,
Sundra and Thomas Essien.
Mr. Essien graduated from the Michael E. DeBakey High
School for Health Professions in May 1998 and enlisted
in the United States Navy. There, he completed his naval
training programs with honors and served as an
electronics technician. Mr. Essien also earned an
Associate of General Studies degree, with honors, from
Central Texas College in Killeen. Mr. Essien was
accepted into the school of architecture at the
University of Houston for the fall of 2004.
Mr. Essien was a mature Christian who blessed others
with his generosity, kindness and good-natured spirit.
Mr. Essien was a member of New Faith Church, where he
was baptized in 1987. Mr. Essien will be greatly missed
by his family in Nigeria.

was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World
War II. Mr. Garwood worked as a computer technician and
was a member of the Catholic Church.

Mr. William Richard “Rick” Conarroe, age 51 of Lufkin,
passed away Sunday, July 25, 2004 at his residence. Mr.
Conarroe was born April 5, 1953 in Crockett to William
Melvin and Grace (Thomas) Conarroe. Mr. Conarroe
graduated from Groveton High School. Mr. Conarroe worked
for Brookshire Brothers for 20 years, after which he
became self-employed. Mr. Conarroe had resided in Lufkin
for the past 25 years and played a very active part in
the community. Mr. Conarroe served on the Board of
Trustees of Central ISD for 14 years, and had served on
the Board of Directors of Goodwill and the Idlewood
Water Control and Improvement District. Mr. Conarroe was
a past president of the Central Booster Club, the
Pineywoods Youth Basketball Association, the Central
Little Dribblers As-sociation, the Central Softball
Association and the Idlewood Homeowners Association.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Debbie Conarroe,
of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law Shelly and Chad

Thursday, July 22, 2004 in the East Texas Medical
Center-Crockett. Mrs. Langham was born August 31, 1923
in Percilla and had lived most of her lifetime in
Houston County. Mrs. Langham had worked as a sales lady
for K. Woolens and was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Crockett.

Mrs. Mary Jane Keeland Dawson, age 92 of Crockett,
passed away Thursday, July 1, 2004 in Houston. Mrs.
Dawson was born June 14, 1912 in Grapeland.
Mrs. Dawson was a member of the First Baptist Church
joining at an early age. She served as Di-rector of the
nursery for 25 years and was a committee chairperson.
Mrs. Dawson was a former member of the Magnolia Garden
Club, Culture Club, and Cadman Club of Crockett. She was
a member of the Choral Club, Spring Creek Country Club
and the Tuesday Sewing Club, honorary members being Bob
Overstreet, Frank Towery and Thomas McClendon. She was a
board member of the Rusk State Hospital volunteers,
chairperson of the Decorating committee of the
restoration of the Monroe Crook house and a member of
the Downes Aldrich Corporation. She was an organizing
member of the Major Jarrell Beasley Daughters of
American Revolution, serving as treasure and chairperson
of many committees. She was a former member of the Davy
Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas, ancestor of A.E. Gossett, who gave the Townsite.
Mrs. Dawson was also a former member of the La Salloe
Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists, the
Jamestown Society, the Magna Carter Dames. She was
former member of the Colonial Dames of America Chapter
VIII, Houston. Mrs. Dawson was a descendent of Joseph
Royall, who came to America, settled on the Jamestown
River in Virginia in 1622. A founder and Patriot.
Mrs. Dawson was a graduate of Crockett High School,
attended CIA, Mary Hardin Baylor College and the
University of Texas, majoring in Architecture and
Interior Design.
Survivors include daughter Mary Jane Byrd of Houston;
grandchildren Robert Dawson and wife Melinda and Mary
Elizabeth Byrd Gomez of Houston; great grandchildren
Lauren and Kristen Byrd and Gilbert Oran Gomez III;
sister Theresa Overstreet; Nieces and nephews Robert C.
Overstreet Jr, Francis O. Tabor and husband Tommy; grand
niece’s and nephew’s Stacy Selman and husband Troy,
Sabrina O. Driskell and husband Jim, Bob Overstreet III,
Kimberly Phillips, Ronald Walker, Lance Corporal T.J.
Tabor, Jr, Katelyn Tabor Carmichael, Courtney Huff, Ty
Huff, Madison and Emily Phillips, Kalee, Emily and Macie
Walker. “Aunt Jane” is survived by many loving and
precious Dawson relatives and friends.
Mrs. Dawson was preceded in death by son-in law Wm. W.
Byrd and great niece Melissa Huff.

most of his lifetime. Mr. Ainsworth was a veteran of the
National Guard Reserves having served as a Buck

the U.S. Army having served during World War II. Mr.

Mrs. Grace Ann Green,
age 65 of Oakwood, passed away Monday, July 5, 2004 at
East Texas Medical Center-Tyler. Mrs. Green was born
April 7, 1939 in Crockett to Marvin and Jewel Owens
Stuart. Mrs. Green had lived in rural Leon County for
the past ten years, having moved there from Houston
where she had worked several years as an electronic
technician for the oil industry. Mrs. Green was a member
of the North Creek Baptist Church and was very active in
the church’s ministry, working in the church food
pantry, helping her husband do church yard work and
teaching pre-schoolers in V.B.S. and Sunday School. Mrs.
Green enjoyed flower gardening. Mrs. Green was very
devoted to her family and was a wonderful wife, mother
and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband Jimmie Wayne Green, of
Oakwood; three sons Rick Sims, Dean Sims and wife Maria,
all of Houston and Stacy Wayne Green, of Texas City; two

had been living in Tyler, previously living most of his
lifetime in Houston County. Mr. Koepnick was a veteran

Mr. Robert Edmond Davies, age 83 of
Crockett, formerly of Kerrville and Dallas, passed away
Sunday, June 27, 2004 in the East Texas Medical Center
in Tyler of pneumonia after a long struggle with
cerebral vasculitis.
Robert, fondly known as Bob by family and friends, was
born in Dwight, Illinois to Herbert and Louise Davies on
March 6, 1921. After graduating from Pontiac Township
High School in 1939, he joined the Air National Guard
and came to San Antonio. During pilot cadet training, he
met Alice Jenah Mohn of Ingram. They were married on
July 27, 1943 in the Chapel at Randolph Air Force Base
after receiving his Wings. Iris Lock Chronis of Hunt,
was Maid of Honor and Lt. Andrew J. Darst was best man.
Lt. Davies was stationed at Moore Field, in Mission,
where he served his country as a flight instructor in
the Army Air Corps. During this time their daughter
Suzanne, was born in November of 1944 in McAllen.
After the war, Bob honored Alice’s preference for her
native Texas’ winters over the snow in Illinois. And
they made Dallas, their home for over thirty years. Bob
studied to be an aeronautical engineer, but eventually
decided to become an architectural designer after
serving under registered architects. His own firm became
known as Robert Davies and Associates. Bob mentored many
young graduates before starting out on their own.
In 1981 Bob and Alice moved to Kerrville, where Bob
continued his custom architectural design work
part-time, devoting more time to his hobby of building
model airplanes from scratch. He was a member of the
International Plastic Modelers’ Society. His perfect
scale models won many national and international awards.
While in Kerrville, Bob served on the boards of the
First United Methodist Church and the Tierra Linda
Ranch. He drove to San Antonio once a week to volunteer
at Wilford Hall Hospital and was chaplin for the local
chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. He also
helped Alice established a butterfly garden at the
Riverside Nature Center. After 23 years at Tierra Linda
Ranch in the Texas Hill Country, Bob and Alice moved to
the Piney Woods of East Texas in April of 2003 to be
near their daughter and son-in-law in Crockett. Soon
after moving to Crockett, Bob became ill.
Bob Davies is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice
Jenah Davies, of Crockett; daughter and son-in-law
Suzanne and Louis Cook, of Crockett; granddaughters
Alice Anne McDuffee and husband Patrick, of Frisco, and
Nellie Anne Baker and husband Joey, of St. Cloud, Fla.;
great-grandsons Collin Loch and William Patrick McDuffee,
of Frisco, and Brooks Lane Baker, of St. Cloud, Fla.;
sister Marian Louise Kamrath and husband Leroy, of San
Diego, Calif.; nephew Allan Kamrath; and niece Mary Lou
Smith, of San Diego, Calif.
Funeral services for Mr. Robert Edmond Davies were held
Thursday, July 1, at 11:00 a.m. at First United
Methodist Church in Crockett with Dr. Jerry House and
Dr. Jack Albright officiating.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 2, at the Rose

Mr. Benjamin “Leo” Wright, passed away
Monday, July 5, 2004 after a brief illness with cancer.
Mr. Wright retired from the City of Houston in 1963 and
moved to Holly Community and lived there for 40 years.
Mr. Wright really enjoyed his retirement filling his
days with gardening, hunting and fishing. Mr. Wright
enjoyed the community activities, especially at the
Holly Community Center. July 8th Ida and Leo would have
celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife Ida Davis Wright, of Milam;
sons Gene Wright, of Milam, Jim Wright and wife Patsy,
of Montgomery; son-in-law Don Fraser, of Houston; ten
grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and six
great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Funeral services for Mr. Benjamin “Leo” Wright were held
Saturday, July 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Goodson
officiating. Interment followed in the Holly Cemetery.

Mrs. Bessie Faver, age 100 of Crockett,
passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at her residence in
Crockett. Mrs. Faver was born April 11, 1904 in Groveton
and had lived all of her lifetime in Crockett. Mrs.
Faver was a retired teacher and taught for 55 years,
most of those years in Crockett ISD. Mrs. Faver received
the Pilot Woman of the Year Award in 1989, the Golden
Apple Award by the Houston County Chamber of Commerce
and was named in the Hall of Fame by Groveton
Ex-Students Association in 1994. Mrs. Faver was active
in the Monroe Crook House, a member of the Delta Kappa
Gamma and was also a member of the First Christian
Church where she served as a deacon.
Survivors include her son William P. “Bo” Faver and wife
Gloria, of Hill Top Lakes; granddaughter Kristin Thomson
and husband Don, of San Antonio; grandson Lloyd Faver
and wife Angie, of Fort Worth, great-grandchildren
Justin, Jonny and Jennie Thomson, Bo and Gracie Faver;
sister Mildred Bruton, of Lovelady; nieces Mary Ann
Schaubhut, Becky Reineman and husband Richard; nephew
Butch Bruton; great-niece Lauren Schaubhut.
Preceded in death by her husband Lee Roy Faver; parents
Woody and Caroline Poston; and nephew Phil Bruton.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Faver were held
Tuesday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Shane Mize officiating.
Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ruth Childs, age 68 of Crockett, passed
away Friday, July 2, 2004 in the East Texas Medical
Center-Tyler. Mrs. Childs was born January 11, 1936 in
Trinity County and had resided in Crockett most of her
lifetime. Mrs. Childs was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and
also a Youth Group Leader. Mrs. Childs was a volunteer
at East Texas Medical Center-Crockett.
Survivors include her husband Glayse Childs, of
Crockett; Chuck Childs and wife Mary Ann, Mike Childs
and wife Kelly, all of Crockett; grandchildren Sy,
Rachel and Georgeann Childs, Chelsea and Danielle
Childs; sisters Mary Lou Armentor, of New Iberia, La,
Jackie Watters, of Houston, Shirley Case, Ira Jo Borel
and Norma Sue David, all of New Iberia, La.; brother
Alfred “Buddy” Johnson, of Trinity; brother-in-law

Mrs. Mina Olive Wilson, age 92 of DeKalb, passed away
Thursday, July 1, 2004 in the New Boston Healthcare
Center. Mrs. Wilson was born September 13, 1911 in the
Arbor Community and had been living in DeKalb since 1992
previously living in Centerville in 1979 and Houston
County. Mrs. Wilson had worked at Crockett Candy Kitchen
and had also worked as the recreation director at
Centerville Senior Citizens Center. Mrs. Wilson was a
housewife and a member of the South Loop Church of
Christ in Crockett.
Survivors include her sons Carrel Wilson and wife Tiny,
of DeKalb, Lloyd Wayne Wilson and wife Marjorie, of
Bullard; daughter Gorma Feagin and husband Lonnie, of
Surfside; grandchildren E.L. “Buddy” Wilson and fiancee
Jenifer Bow, of Longmont, Colo., Dedra Balmain and
husband Jeff, of DeKalb, Sandra Wilson, of Bullard,
Sherrie Feagin and husband Earl, and Karen Thompson, all

Mrs. Elizabeth Annette
Burnett, age 72 of Palestine, passed away Thursday, June
24, 2004 at her home. Mrs. Burnett was born May 10, 1932
in Crockett to the late Tommie J. and Lizzie Wedemeyer
Brown. Mrs. Burnett lived in Palestine most of her life
and was a Methodist. Mrs. Burnett was a secretary for
many years at the Hunter Kay Clinic and later at H.L.
Brown and Associates.
Survivors include her two daughters Linda Burnett
Oswald, of La Belle, FL. and Sylvia Burnett Hubble, of
Bryan; one brother Billy R. Brown, of Corpus Christi;
three grandchildren Alan Hubble, Jennifer Oswald and
Melissa Howell; and one great-grandchild Ryleigh Howell.
Preceded in death by her husband Lionel V. Burnett in
March 1994.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Annette Burnett were
held Sunday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Herrington/Land of
Memory Chapel. Interment followed in the Roselawn
Cemetery.

Cromeens, age 74 of Conroe, passed away Wednesday, June
23, 2004 in Conroe. Mrs. Cromeens was born September 21,
1929 in Jacksonville. Mrs. Cromeens was a member of the
Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years T.J. Cromeens,

Mr. Jim Campbell, age 80 of Lovelady, passed
away Saturday, June 19, 2004 in The East Texas Medical
Center-Crockett. Mr. Campbell was born September 6, 1923
in Houston and had been living in Lovelady for many
years.
Mr. Campbell was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having
served during World War II. Mr. Campbell worked and
retired as an auto repairman and he also worked for the
Texas Department of Corrections. Mr. Campbell was a
member of the Wayside Bible Church.
Survivors include her sister Lorena Jeffries, of
Houston; daughter in action and his best friend Shirley
and Bill Hughes, of Lovelady; grandchildren Chris Hughes
and wife Leah, of Grays Lake, ILL., Tracy Carroll and
husband Buck, of Weldon, Amanda Graham and husband
Nickolas, of Fayetteville, N.C.; great-grandchildren

Baptist Church in Ratcliff and was a housewife.

Mrs. Virginia Necessary Hutchinson, age 73
of Crockett, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004 in the
East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Hutchinson was
born February 24, 1931 in Gatesville and had lived in
Crockett for 32 years. Mrs. Hutchinson was a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church and a 25 year member and past
worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star #509.
Mrs. Hutchison was employed for over 25 years at Wayne
Williams Motor Company where she worked as an office
manager.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law Kathy
and George Wolf, of Deer Park, Karla and Hugh Swanzy, of
Bedford; step-daughter Lillian Miller, of Houston;
grandchildren Leon Williams, of Corpus Christi, James

Miss Whitaker was born October 15, 1913 in Grapeland to
Major Lewis Whitaker and Vera Clyde Ferguson Whitaker.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as an accountant for
Sears Regional.
