Mrs. Nettie Goodwin
Mrs. Nettie Goodwin, 88, of Lovelady, died Monday afternoon, May 7, in
the Houston County Hospital. Mrs. Goodwin was born in Mississippi on
March 28, 1885, but had lived in Lovelady and Houston County for about
75 years. She was a member of the Lovelady Church of Christ. Funeral
services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Lovelady Church of
Christ, with Mr. H. H. Conner officiating. Interment was in the Holly
Cemetery. Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Susie Walkerson of
Huffman, Mrs. Catharine Williamson and Mrs. Anna Standley, both of
Lovelady, Mrs. Marie Hodges of Texas City, Mrs. Ella Strambald of
Bayview, Mrs. Maybell High of Miami, Arizona, and Mrs. Gene Tacquard of
Alta Loma; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Barnes of Crockett; 21 grandchildren;

Mrs. Alma Lee Goodwin
Mrs. Alma Lee Goodwin, 59, of Lovelady, died Friday in a local hospital.
Mrs. Goodwin was born July 24, 1910, in Upshur County. She was a member
of the Lovelady Baptist Church, and of the Lovelady Civic Club. Funeral
services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lovelady Baptist Church,
with Rev. John Evans and Rev. J. D. Howell officiating. Burial was in
the Evergreen Cemetery of Lovelady. Pallbearers were Horace Bartee,
Morris Easterly, James Lane, Enoch Broxson Jr., Hollis Driskell and Jack
Easton. Survivors include the husband, Birtis J. Goodwin of Lovelady; a
son, Paul Goodwin of Houston; and two grandchildren. Callaway Funeral

James C. Goodwin
Mr. James C. Goodwin, 78, of Lovelady, passed away Tuesday. Nov. 21, in
the Houston County Hospital. Mr. Goodwin was a member of the Church of
Christ. He was a veteran of World War I. Funeral services were held at
2:30 p.m. Friday in the Waller Chapel, with Mr. Harry Conner
officiating. Interment was in the Center Hill Cemetery Survivors include
the widow, Mrs. Madie Goodwin of Lovelady; a son, Sherral Goodwin of
Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. Lavern Clay of Fort Worth and Mrs. Eloise
Carnley of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Ardena Sanders of Groveton;

Birtis James Goodwin
Funeral services for Birtis James Goodwin, 68, were held at 2 p.m. Oct.
3 in the Callaway Memorial Chapel. Mr. Odell Carter officiated. Burial
was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lovelady. Mr. Goodwin, a resident of
Lovelady, died in Houston County Hospital Oct. 1. He was born Aug 19,
1906 in Houston County and was a retired rural mail carrier. Survivors
include a son, Paul C. Goodwin of Houston; two brothers. Milton Goodwin
of Chireno, and Elvin Goodwin of Lake Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Letha
and Mrs. Lucille Smith of Columbus; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers
were Horace Bartee, lacy Bartee, Jack Easton, Claud Brown, Leslie

Mrs. Mabel Guinn Goolsbee
Mrs. Mabel Guinn Goolsbee, 75, of 142 South Grace St., Crockett, passed
away Tuesday, Nov. 9 in a Waco hospital. Mrs. Goolsbee, a retired school
teacher, had lived in Crockett most of her life. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday in the First Methodist Church, with Rev. H. J. Rhodes
officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Survivors include
a brother, Robert H. Guinn of San Augustine; a brother-in-law, Dr. Frank
Dillard of Crockett; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Klatt and Mrs. Mary Jane
Shipley, both of Waco, and Mrs. Beulah Kolar of LaSalle; also a number
of nieces and nephews. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of

Thomas Webster (Web) Goolsbee
Mr. Thomas Webster (Web) Goolsbee, 90, of 214 East Arkansas St. Vivian,
La., died early Monday morning in a Vivian hospital. Mr. Goolsbee was
born March 4, 1881 in Woodville, and had resided in Crockett for a great
number of years before he moved to Louisiana about 17 years ago. He was
a retired blacksmith and farmer, and a member of the Christian Church.
Mr. Goolsbee was a member of Lothrop Lodge No.21, F & AM, and had served
as master of this lodge on two separate occasions. Funeral services were
held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Callaway Memorial Chapel, with Rev. David
Sebesta officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park in
Crockett, with graveside rites under the auspices of Lathrop Lodge NO.
21 of Crockett. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Lucy T. Goolsbee of
Vivian La.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Kermit Keltner of Edwards, Mo.; a
sister, Mrs. Marion Armstrong of Alto; and two step grandchildren.

Mr. Cleon N. (Pat) Goolsbee, 78, died early Monday morning in a local
hospital. A resident of Houston County for 76 years and a retired
livestock dealer, Mr. Goolsbee was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services were held from the Waller Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00
p.m. Tuesday, with Revs. Byers and Strong officiating. Burial was in
Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Mabel Guinn
Goolsbee of Crockett whom he married 36 years ago; two brothers, Webb
Goolsbee of Vivian, La., and Oscar Goolsbee of Bryan; a sister, Mrs.
Marion Armstrong of Alto, and several nieces and nephews. Waller Funeral

Leo Goolsby and
Mrs. Dillard Goolsby
Funeral services for Leo Goolsby, 67, and his wife, Mrs. Dillard
Goolsby, 60, both of Grapeland, were held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m.
in the First Baptist Church, Grapeland, with the Rev. Kenneth Mobley and
Rev. Charles A. Haley officiating. Burial was in the McCarty Cemetery,
southeast of Grapeland, under the direction of Hassell & Foster. Nephews
served as pallbearers.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Goolsby were pronounced dead on arrival at a Palestine
hospital following injuries received in an automobile accident near
their home about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27. Mrs. Goolsby, the former
Dillard Lorendia Lewis, was born March 28, 1909 in the Volga community
of Houston County to the late John A. Lewis and Mrs. Sarah Mozelle Downs
Lewis, and she was a lifelong Houston County resident. She was a member
of the Ephesus Baptist Church, and she and her husband operated and
owned cafes both in Grapeland and Crockett before retiring. Mr. Goolsby
was born February 22, 1902 in Latexo, Houston County, to the late John
Hugh Goolsby and Mrs. Sally Dickson Goolsby. Lifelong Houston County
resident, he was also a member of Ephesus Baptist Church. They are
survived by one daughter, Mrs. Johnnie W. (Pollie) Jones, and a
grandson, Billy Glenn Jones, both of Grapeland. Survivors of Mrs.
Goolsby also include a step-brother, Alvin Harrison of Louisiana; a half
sister, Mrs. Laura Turner of Houston; three step sisters, Mrs. Lura
Belle Graham of Crockett, Mrs. Emma Slaughter of Mesquite, and Mrs.
Amazone Parker of Houston; several nieces and nephews. Other survivors
of Mr. Goolsby are five brothers, Luther Goolsby of Dayton, Texas, Lon
and Lawrence Goolsby, both of Latexo, Gail Goolsby of Grapeland, and
Linnie J. Goolsby of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Trounds of
Crockett, and Mrs. Ellie McQueen of Houston; several nieces and nephews.

Helen Goolsby
Funeral services for Mrs. Jelen Goolsby, 83, were held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church. Rev. E. J. Davis
officiated. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park. Mrs. Gooslby, a
resident of Crockett, died Tuesday morning in Houston County Hospital.
She was born Sept. 13, 1891 in Houston County and had resided here all
her life. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
Crockett; a charter member of the Crockett Culture Club, and a charter
member of past president of Crockett PTA, and was past worthy matron,
Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Goolsby was active in the Women's
Society of Christian Service, and was a past chairman of the Cancer
Crusade. Survivors include a son, Dr. Carl B. Goolsby of Crockett; a
daughter, Mrs. Martha Christenson of Colorado Springs, Colo,; three
brothers, D. C. Cannon of Edinburg, Ben W. Cannon of Corpus Christi, and
Lois Cannon of Pasadena; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Barker
Tunstall Jr., T. J. Tunstall, Joe Bennett, Dr. A. B. Brown Jr., Jim

Edwin Alexander Gordon Jr.
Mr. Edwin Alexander Gordon Jr. of Rt. 2, Crockett, died Saturday, Aug
25, in a Crockett nursing home at the age of 76. Mr. Gordon was born in
Falls County, Texas, on June 7, 1897 but had lived in Crockett since
1971. He was a member of the St. Johns Methodist Church of Austin, Texas
and was a retired employee of the Texas Liquor Control Board. Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug 27, at the Weed-Corley Funeral
Home in Austin with burial to follow in the Austin Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. E. A. Gordon of Crockett; two sons, Jim
Gordon of Crockett and Dr. Robert L. Gordon of Conroe; two daughters,
Mrs. H. A. Holcomb of Canton, Mrs. Ralph Davis of Portland, Ore.; three
brothers, H. S. Gordon of Gilmer, Louis G. Gordon and John B. Fordon,
both of Ft. Smith, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Ft. Smith,
Ark., and Mrs. George Hail, also of Ft. Smith; 16 grandchildren; three

Dr. Olaf Kristain Gorseth
Dr. Olaf Kristain Gorseth 81, of Crockett, died early Tuesday morning in
the Houston County Hospital, after a brief illness. Dr. Gorseth was born
Jan. 17, 1889, in Norway, but came to the United States in 1912, and had
lived here for the past 60 years. He was a practicing osteopath in
Houston for many years, and moved to Crockett in mid-December to retire
here. Dr. Gorseth was of the Baptist Faith. Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Callaway Memorial Chapel, with rev. E. P.
Ramsey, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was
in Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett. Pallbearers were Robert
Buffington, Deal Craven, Elmer Craven, Hayne Thornton, Johnny Brannen
and P. J. Avery. Surviving is the widow, Mrs. Dollie Ruth Buffington
Gorseth of Crockett. Callaway Funeral Home of Crockett was in charge of
arrangements.

Mrs. Ida Mae Hale Gossett
Mrs. Ida Mae Hale Gossett, 85, of Crockett, died in Community Hospital,
Jacinto City on Friday. Mrs. Gossett was born in Houston County May 9,
1881. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Crockett.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with Rev. Glen Stovall, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church of
Crockett, officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Gene Sawyer, Mayes Hale, Dozier Gossett, Cleon
Robinson, Gean Hale and Harrell Hale Carpenter. Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Robbie White of Galena Park and Mrs. Glen H. White of
Huntsville; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren. Callaway

Mr. Dozier Gossett, 59, died Saturday in a Crockett hospital. Mr.
Gossett, a machinist for Hughes Tool Co., was born Sept. 28, 1910, in
Houston County. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral
services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Callaway Memorial Chapel,
with Rev. E. P. Ramsey Jr. of the First Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in the New Energy Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Buckley,
Cleon Robinson, Elbert Burks, Oliver D. White, Ronald T. Payne and
Lawson Payne, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were employees of Hughes Tool
Co., R. B. Hall, George Lane, George Cansler, Tom Payne, Burleigh

Walter William Gossett
Mr. Walter William Gossett, 87, died Thursday, November 22, in a local
hospital. Born in Crockett November 15, 1875, Mr. Gossett was a retired
farmer and a descendant of A. E. Gossett, who donated the land on which
the city of Crockett is located. Funeral Services were held from the
Calvary Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. W. A. Corley and Rev.
Deward Mullens officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Elbert Burks, Mayes Hale, Dozier Gossett, Everett
Davis, Dozier Gossett, Everett Davis, Eugene Sawyer and George Lane.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. A. B. Brown Jr., Dr. C. B. Goolsby,

Mrs. Ester Evelyn Gossett, 86, of Crockett, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, in a
local hospital. Mrs. Gossett was born Dec. 7, 1884, in Nacogdoches. She

p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Callaway Memorial Chapel, with Rev. H.
J. Rhodes of the First Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed

Mr. Andy G. Gossett, 87, of Rt. 1, Box 245, Crockett, passed away
Friday, April 21, in a local hospital. Mr. Gossett was a lifelong
resident of Houston County. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

with Rev. E. P. Ramsey officiating. Interment was in the New Energy

Mr. Andrew Wilson Gossett, 79, of Port Arthur, passed away Sunday, Oct.
31, in Port Arthur. Mr. Gossett was a former resident of Crockett, but
had lived in Port Arthur for the past several years. He was retired from
the Gulf Oil Co. His great grandfather gave the townsite for Crockett.
Mr. Gossett was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were
held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Waller Chapel, with Rev. H. J. Rhodes
officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors
include a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Maude McVey of Port Arthur; two sisters,
Mrs. C. C. Hill of Grapeland and Mrs. H. J. Trubest of Crockett; and
three grandchildren, Mrs. Dick Walker, Mrs. Allen Hefty and Jimmy McVey,

Trink Gossett
Mr. Trink Gossett, 92, of Rt. 1, Crockett, died Saturday, July 14, in
the Houston County Hospital. Mr. Gossett, a retired farmer and rancher,
was born May 20, 1881, in Houston County. Mr. Gossett's parents were
prominent pioneer settlers of Crockett and Houston County, and he was
the father of the late Dozier Gossett. Funeral services were held Monday
at 10:30 a.m. in the Callaway Memorial Chapel, with Rev. E. D. Sarratt
of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the New Energy
Cemetery. Pallbearers were William McAnally, Louie McAnally, Billy
Graham, Jimmy Potter, T. B. Minter and J. C. Minter. Survivors include a
brother, Wilsie Gossett of Crockett; a grandson, Dozier Payne Gossett of
Pasadena; also several nieces and nephews. Callaway Funeral Home of

Lois Almerta Gossett
Miss Lois Alberta Gossett, 65, of Baytown, died in a Baytown hospital
April 25. Miss Gossett, who had resided in Houston County most of her
life, was a member of the Methodist Church. Graveside funeral services
were held Friday at 4 p.m. in Glenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Jewel Strong
officiating. Survivors include a brother, Frank Gossett of Highlands.

Deidra Suzanne Goynes
Miss Deidra Suzanne Goynes of Crockett, age two weeks, passed away
Tuesday night at the Houston County Hospital. She was born Sept. 4,
1973. Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 20, at 10
a.m. in the Hagen Cemetery with Rev. E. D. Sarratt officiating.
Interment was in the Hagen Cemetery. She is survived by her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Floyd J. Goynes of Crockett; a brother, John Randall Goynes of
Crockett; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Reba Johnson of Crockett, and
Paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Goynes of Lovelady; two great
grandmothers, Mrs. Vonnie Goynes and Mrs. Ola Arnold both of Lovelady.

Mr. Jesse Goynes, 66, of Rt. 1, Lovelady, died Thursday in a local
hospital, following a short illness. Mr. Goynes, born in Trinity County
July 19, 1901, was a retired carpenter. He was a member of the Antioch
Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the
Antioch Baptist Church, with Rev. R. J. Marshall and Roy W. Marshall
officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery. Pallbearers were Homer
Butler, Norman Chandler, Hayne Weeks, Harris Reynolds, Joe John Reinicke
and Billy Reinicke. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Jesse Goynes of
Lovelady; a son, Lester Goynes of Lovelady; three grandchildren.

Mr. Tracy H. Graham, 64, died Thursday at 12:15 a.m. in a Houston
hospital. Mr. Graham had resided in the Latexo area most of his life,
but had moved to Houston about two months ago. Funeral services were
held from the Latexo Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev.
Terry Cashion officiating, assisted by the Rev. Turner. Burial was in
the Latexo Cemetery. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Jimmie Graham of
Houston; four daughters, Mrs. Pauline Waller of Beaumont, Mrs. Maggie L.
Boykin, Mrs. Marguerette Rhoads and Mrs. Tracy Gene Thompson, all of
Houston; two brothers, Earnest Graham of Palestine and Preston Graham of
Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Brown and Mrs. Willie Mae Platt, both

Henry L. Graham
Funeral services for Mr. Henry L. Graham, 84, of Houston, formerly of
Latexo, were held Wednesday, July 15, at 2 p.m. in the Latexo Baptist
Church with Elder R. L. Blevins officiating. Burial was in the Latexo
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Brown, Rayburn Brown, Noble Ray Graham,
David Graham, James Platt, James Boykin, Kenneth Graham, Jerry Graham,
and L. Ray Platt. A native of Houston County, Mrs. Graham was born near
Weches on Dec. 13, 1879. A retired farmer, he lived in Latexo most of
his life before moving to Houston nine years ago. A member of the
Baptist church, he died Tuesday, July 14, at 4:30 a.m. in a Jacinto City
hospital. Survivors are three sons, Tracy Graham and Preston Graham,
both of Latexo, and Ernest Graham of Palestine: two daughters, Mrs.
Wilma Brown and Mrs. Willie Mae Platt, both of Houston; a half-brother,
Hugh Graham of Latexo, and a half-sister, Mrs. Maud Smith of Latexo; 27
grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren.

Mr. Elwood (Preacher) Graham, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 16, in a
local hospital. Mr. Graham was a lifelong resident of Houston County,
and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Waller Funeral Home
Chapel, with Rev. James Trigg and Rev. E. P. Ramsey officiating. Burial
was in the Milligan Cemetery. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Meredith Graham of Crockett; the widow, Mrs. Marjorie Graham, of

Mr. John Norman Graham, 21, of 46 Parker Road, Houston, passed away
Sunday, July 30, in Houston. Mr. Graham had lived in Houston for the
past five years. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Graveside

parents, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Graham of Houston; four brothers, Charles,
Gene, J. D. and Wayne Graham, all of Houston; and three sisters, Mrs.
Kathryn Fogle, Mrs. Gladys Bray and Mrs. Sharron Smith, all of Houston.
Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie M. Graham
Mr. Jessie M. Graham, 86, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24,
in the Houston County Hospital. Mr. Graham was a resident of Houston
County for most of his life. He was a retired farmer, and a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday
in the Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. E. L. Jones, Rev. Charles
McCamey and Rev. E. D. Sarratt officiating. Interment followed in the
Milligan Cemetery. Survivors include five sons, Frank P., J. T. and Roy
Graham, all of Crockett, Herbert Graham of Houston; a brother, Meredith
Graham of Crockett; a half-brother, J. H. Graham of Bay City; 19
grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
