Funeral Services for Mrs. Carrie Lee McKnight Watson, age 70, were held Saturday, April 22, 2006, 1 p.m., St. Luke Baptist Church, 315 South 2nd Crockett, Rev. R.P. Taylor, pastor and Supt. J.R. Hampton, officiated. Eternal resting place was in Giles-Huntley Cemetery.
Casketbearers were: John McKnight, F.B. Evans Jr., Anthony Wooten, Cleotis Hickman, Alton Davis, W.L. Til-lis, Ennis McKnight and Tommy Taylor.
Carrie Lee Mcknight Watson was born on June 24, 1935 in Crockett to the late Sam and Satira McKnight. She attended the Center Grove Schools. In 1954 she married Hunter Watson Jr. with 6 children born to their union.
She attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in the early years then later joined Hampton Memorial Church Of God In Christ. At Hampton she sang in the choir for many years, served as choir treasurer, and was on the culinary staff. Life's departure was on April 14, 2006 in the local hospital.
She was preceded in death by 2 granddaughters; Actavia Evans and LeMesa Boston and 4 siblings.

Wanda Watson

Mrs. Wanda Darlene Chandler Watson, age 58 of Centerville, passed away Monday, December 19, 2005 in Crockett. Mrs. Watson was born June 22, 1947 in Cullman, Alabama. Mrs. Watson had lived in Leon County for 20 years, moving from Baytown and for 15 years she worked for Exxon in Baytown as a shipping coordinator. Mrs. Watson's hobbies were quilting, flower gardening and music.
Survivors include her two sons and daughter-in-law Melvin L. Moore, Jr., of Baytown and Marcus and Jill Moore, of Centerville; step-mother Kathy Chandler, of Cullman, Ala.; brother Herschel Chandler, of Sipsy, Ala.; sister Becky Chandler, of Rye; and a grandson Tyler A. Moor, of Channelview.
Preceded in death by her husband Billy Watson; parents Arrie Chandler and Lois Chandler Gentry; and sister Betty Brown.

Mrs. Betty Ruth Franklin Walling, age 67 of Ratcliff, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2006 at her residence in Ratcliff. Mrs. Walling was born October 25, 1938 in Cleveland and had lived most of her lifetime in Ratcliff. Mrs. Walling was a housewife and a member of the Truth Tabernacle Church in Kennard. Mrs. Walling loved family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Angela Campbell Thorp, age 31 of Lovelady, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006 in the Houston County Nursing Home. Mrs. Thorp was born February 5, 1975 in Cloquet, Minnesota and had been living in Lovelady. Mrs. Thorp was a student.

Alton Thomason

Mr. Alton L. Thomason, age 97 of Trinity, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006 in Avalon Place in Trinity. Mr. Thomason was born December 6, 1908 in Crockett and had been living in Trinity, previously living in Crockett. Mr. Thomason was retired and had worked as an iron worker for Local #84 in Houston. Mr. Thomason was a member of the First Baptist Church in Groveton and attended the Baptist Church in Crockett.
Survivors include his son William Roy Thomason and wife Carol, of Houston; daughter Ava Bennett, of Sebasto-pol; step-daughter Mable Whitner and husband Sammy, of Willis Point; six grandchildren; several grandchildren; brother Emery Thomason and wife Lola Mae, of Quinlan.

Violet Teal

Mrs. Violet Ethelle Teal, age 73 of Denison, passed away Monday, March 20, 2006 at Texoma Medical Center surrounded by her loving. Mrs. Teal was born October 12, 1932 in Kennard to Homer Thell and Grace (Gibson) Gunnels. Mrs. Teal married Edward "Ed" Teal on January 18, 1951 in Post. Mrs. Teal was an active member of Parkside Baptist Church, where she loved serving her God and church. One of her greatest joys was her family, grandchildren and great-grand-daughters. Mrs. Teal will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Fannie Swearingen

Mrs. Fannie Mae Swearingin, age 84 of Austonio, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Swearingin was born June 8, 1921 to Wiley Wilson (W.W.) and Ida (McDonald) Christian. Mrs. Swearingin grew up in the Ash Community, near Austonio, and graduated in 1939 from Austonio High School. After graduation, she worked as a waitress at the Royal Café in Crockett for many years.
On September 27, 1945, she married George "Elmer" Swearingin of Ash, after he returned from serving in the Army Air Corp in World War II. In May of 1948, they moved to Houston, making their home for more than 20 years. Mrs. Swearingin was one of the first checkers when Walmart opened in Crockett. Mrs. Swearingin was a member of the Austonio Baptist Church and was a devoted wife of 60 years.

Ruby Steel

Mrs. Ruby Ester Steel, age 90 of Crockett, went to be with the Lord, Monday, January 2, 2006. Mrs. Steel was born May 12, 1915 in the Arbor Community and had lived in Houston County all of her lifetime. Mrs. Steel was a homemaker and a member of the Arbor Baptist Church. Mrs. Steel served her family and loved them and also she had love for anyone in need. Mrs. Steel and her husband treated everyone with tender loving care and she was a jewel to know, and her sence of humor was keen. The Lord gave her peace about everything she had to go through and we see she has passed that on. Mrs. Steel's hobbies were quilting, cooking and reading the Bible, even to her grandchildren as they grew and her heart has always been in the right place. The comfort and joy she gave to others was awesome. How precious she was to all who knew her.

Rickey Starling

Mr. Rickey Starling, age 45 of Crockett, passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Starling was born August 27, 1960 in San Jacinto and he lived in Crockett all of his lifetime. Mr. Starling was employed with Quantex having worked as a machinist and was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Lisa Starling, of Latexo; son Daniel Starling, of Latexo; father Vernon Starling, of Ken-nard; sisters Janice Martin Hampton and Terry Hampton, of Porter Springs and Sharon Kirksey, of Crockett; brother Vernon Lynn Starling, of Jonesboro, AR.; mother-in-law Brenda Hill, of Latexo; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dale Shroyer

Mr. Dale C. Shroyer, age 96, passed away into eternal life surrounded by loved ones on Thursday morning, March 9, 2006 at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett. Mr. Shroyer was the son of Guy F. and Martha Jane Shroyer. Mr. Shroyer was born August 6, 1909 in Delaware County, Indiana near Muncie. Mr. Shroyer's family moved to Houston County by train when he was four months old, and resided in the area for the rest of his life.
Mr. Shroyer worked away in many places, but Houston County was always home. Mr. Shroyer worked in all the East Texas Oil Booms, Oklahoma and Louisiana Oil Fields. Mr. Shroyer worked on the first off shore oil rig off the coast of Louisiana. Mr. Shroyer and John Smith Murchison operated Crockett Drilling Company for 35 years. At the age of 58 he began a new career in the dairy business, and operated a dairy on his land from 1967 to 1979. In later years he ran stocker cattle and harvested hay until he was 89 years old.
Mr. Shroyer did a lot to comply with an old saying, "The best thing you can put on your land is footprints." In his 96 years, Mr. Shroyer saw transportation methods advance from horse and buggy to the space age. Some of his fa-vorite memories were of riding to school in a wagon with his siblings when Highway 7 was a dirt and mud road.
Mr. Shroyer was married to his late wife Ludelphia for 66 years and their main joys in life were their church, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were organizing members of Westside Baptist Church. Mr. Shroyer was a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and also was Porter Springs and Houston County School Board member and a member of the Lothrop Masonic Lodge #21 A.F. & A.M. for 59 years.
Survivors include his children LaVerne Mathena and husband Ben, Joyce Waldrop and husband James and Johnny Shroyer and wife Stephanie, all of Crockett; grandchildren Mark Mathena and wife Jill, of Crockett, Dale Mathena, of Kingwood, Drew Mathena and wife Shannon, of Austin, Greg Waldrop and wife Sharron, of The Woodlands, Luanne Brownd and husband Gary, of Canton, John Shroyer, Jr. and wife Ann, of Crockett, Mary Lindsey and husband Brad, of Mt. Reverend Betty Jo Shepherd

Reverend Betty Jo Byrd Shepherd was born April 9, 1922 in Crockett to the union of Carl and Ethel Byrd. She grew up in Crockett attended Rocky Mountain Elementary School and later Crockett Colored High School. She is an alumnus of Mary Allen College in Crockett and stud-ied divinity at Texas College in Tyler.
Reverend Betty Shepherd joined Jones Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church at an early age. She was one of first women in Texas to be ordained by the AME Church. She served as pastor of Jones Chapel and various other AME Churches in Texas until her retirement in 1996. Upon her retirement from the AME Church, she was the founding pastor of Jesus Christ Victory Interde-nominational Church (JCVIC) in Crockett in 1997. She con-tinued to serve until her death, Monday, May 1, 2006.
In 1939, she united in holy matrimony with Terrell John-son Shepherd. Five children were born to this union.
She leaves to cherish her memory: husband, Terrell Johnson Shepherd Sr. of Crockett; one son, Terrell Johnson (Arvie Nell) Shep-herd Jr. of Houston; four daughters, Mary Ethel Lester of Dallas, Texas, Evelyn Henry & Betty ‘Candy’ (Roy) Harrison of Houston, and Brenda Berry-Colter of Mans-field.
She is survived by 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. 2 aunts, an un-cle, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and faithful Christian friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, Carl Byrd Sr., Mother, Ethel Byrd, a brother, Carl Byrd Jr., three sisters, Nannie Ballard, Beadie Oneal, Lucille Atmore and grand daughter, Sean Anita Henry.
Reverend Betty Shepherd’s lifework has been to serve humanity by fighting for civil rights and human justice. She served on the founding board of the National Association for the Advancement of Col-ored People (NAACP) in Houston County. She worked tirelessly to register the citizen of Houston County so that all could vote in every state, county, and city election. One of her community outreach priorities included serving as a den mother for the Boy Scouts of America. She loved chil-dren and organized many reli-gious and other educational activities for young people in Houston, County.
She was a business entre-preneur and a licensed insur-ance agent. She also worked tirelessly to keep her churches financially solvent and to pay church obligations.
Monday, May 1, 2006, sur-rounded by her children, she departed for her heavenly home. She leaves a legacy of love, faith in God, and good works for all mankind. She will be dearly missed.
The wake will be held on Friday night, May 5, 2006 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Jesus Christ Victory Inter-denominational Church lo-cated at 206 Maple Street, in Crockett.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday May 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 701 E. Goliad Street in Crockett.

Mr. Sonny Shelton, age 73 of Porter Springs, passed away Monday, May 1, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Shelton was born September 30, 1932 in Houston County and had lived all of his lifetime in Houston County. Mr. Shelton was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Shelton was a member of the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge and was retired having worked as a machinist. Mr. Sheldon was an avid outdoorsman and en-joyed fishing.

Dr. Marvin Russell

Dr. Marvin E. Russell, age 82, of Lovelady, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006 at his residence. Dr. Russell was born July 17, 1923 to Nan and Marvin L. "Bud" Russell in Hearne where his father was a telegrapher and sta-tionmaster for Missouri Pacific Railroad. At age 5, the family moved from Gause where Marvin became critically ill and lost lots of weight. When they moved to Lovelady in 1929, everyone called him "Skinny." In Lovelady, Marvin's mom, Nan Russell, became the first grade teacher and taught for 35 years. During this time, at age 12, Marvin joined the Lovelady First United Methodist Church. Dr. Russell finished high school in Lovelady in 1940 where he played football and was in the FFA club. Dr. Russell played trumpet in the first band at Lovelady High School. In 1940 he entered Sam Houston State Teachers College and finished in 1943 with a B. S. in chemistry. The highlight of his years at Sam Houston was being president of the Pre-med Club and meeting a young lady named Gene Porter who was elected secretary of the club. This relationship was to bloom and eventually blossom into marriage. In 1942 after Pearl Harbor, Marvin volunteered for the navy and was called to active duty before graduation ceremonies in 1943. After various duty stations he ended up on Guam as an aerial photographer. From there he volunteered to go to Japan on the Strategic Bombing Survey making pictures of bombing damage. Mr. Russell was discharged in 1945 at the end of WWII. Gene Porter and Marvin were married on September 1, 1946 when Marvin was teaching Chemistry Labs at SHSTC. Dr. Russell later worked at Firestone Tire and Rub-ber in Beaumont as a chemist while he was waiting to get into UT Dental School in Houston. Dr. Russell gradu-ated from Dental School in 1951 and set up practice in Angleton where he was active in the Chamber of Com-merce and Jr. Chamber of Commerce, a school board member, the PTA, the Boy and Girl Scouts, Little Theatre, and the Methodist Church.
Dr. Russell relaxed by sailing, and playing a lot of golf. Dr. Russell was a member of the American Dental As-sociation, a delegate to the Texas Dental Society House of Representatives from the 9th District Dental Society for 7 years, a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentists, American and International Academy of Dentists.
Dr. Russell retired in 1989 after 38 years of dental practice and moved to Lovelady in 1992 in the house in which he grew up. Dr. Russell was a member of the City Council, the Lovelady Methodist Church, Lovelady Ma-sonic Lodge #539, and became active in the restoration of the "Old Gym" in Bruton Park. Dr. Russell and Gene raised pine trees instead of cows on their sixty acres. Dr. Russell's motto was as Ruskin said, "Service is the rent we pay for the space we occupy on this earth.
Survivors include his wife Gene Russell, of Lovelady; daughter Nancy Lynette "Lyn" Storey and husband Mark of Avery; son Marvin Ray "Ray" Russell, of Angleton; grandchildren James Storey, Thomas Storey, Sarah Storey, all of Avery; cousins Rod Russell and wife Sheryl, of Salado, Rosalind Starkweather and husband Gil of Phoenix, Ariz., Della Hudson and husband Clifton, of Palestine, Mary Bess Thomason and husband David, of Jacksonville; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services for Dr. Marvin E. Russell were held Saturday, April 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Meth-odist Church in Lovelady with the Rev. John Montgomery and the Rev. Doug Howell officiating.
Graveside services was conducted by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans Camp 1565, 13th Texas Infantry, of Angleton where Dr. Russell attained the rank of Major and served as Regimental Surgeon, in the Lovelady Ever-green Cemetery.

Mrs. Phyllis Carol Moore, age 65 of Nocona, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2006 in Nocona. Mrs. Moore was born November 18, 1940 in Wichita Falls to Homer B. Gilmore and Emma Horne. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Harvest Church in Crockett, member of the F.O.E. Eagles Lodge of Wichita Falls and the Mesquite-ers Good Sams R.V. Chapter. Before her retirement she worked as a secretary in a auto repair shop.
Survivors include her daughter Donna and H.D. Gresham, of Crockett; son Norman and Reagan Moore, of Clear Lake; sisters Jenna and Russell Bradley, of Nacona and Shirley and Bob Watson, of N. Patricia "Poo Poo" McCullough was born July 18, 1970 to Ella Ree Reece and Alvin McCullough Sr. the 3rd of 5 children in Crockett. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a 1989 graduate of Crockett High. She loved to ride horses and was a active member of the Whoope-N-Ride riding club. Life's departure was on February 24, 2006 in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones.
Her parents and a brother Alfred McCullough preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: 5 children; LaKeisha McCullough, Terinika McCullough, LaQuevia McCul-lough, Casey Martinez, and DraLesha Riggins, 4 brothers; Ronald "Pee Pee" McCullough, Alvin McCullough (Dedra), Jerome Owens (Gail), Douglas McCullough (Stephanie), grandchild; A'Lyria Bean, paternal grandfather; Bill McCullough, 8 aunts, 8 uncles, 6 nieces, 6 nephews, numerous cousins and friends. Mrs. Betty Marie Willingham McBroom, age 78 of Grapeland, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. McBroom was born March 6, 1928 in Holly and she was raised in Pearsons Chapel and had been back in Houston County since 1986. Mrs. McBroom was a past member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary and was a housewife and a member of the Georgia Camp Baptist Church. Mrs. McBroom walked in grace with her Lord and with the deepest love of her family and friends.

Mrs. Lola B. Martin, age 91 of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2005 in ETMC. Mrs. Martin was born February 7, 1914 in Attoyac to the late Nancy (Leavins) and John Norris. Mrs. Martin was a homemaker and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and her family was the most important part of her life. Mrs. Martin was formerly of Zavalla and Lufkin and had lived in Crockett since 1976 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Zavalla.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Betty Jo Adler Griffin and Charles Griffin, of Crockett; son Cecil Martin, of Trinity; grandchildren and their spouses Vida and Wade Sullivan, Jimmy and Karen Sharp, Pam and Bruce Birdsong, Terrie and Robert Heard, Gayle Bailey, Keeta and Britt Keepers, and Phyllis Phillips; 12 great-grandchildren including Jade and Janna Sharp and Stephanie Sullivan; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numer-ous nieces and nephews.

Alta Lowe

Mrs. Alta Mae Ferguson Lowe was born on June 1, 1924, to Julius and Ruth Ferguson in Crockett, Texas and passed away on March 7, 2006, in Plano. Mrs. Lowe grew up on a farm outside Crockett and graduated valedictorian from Crockett High School. Mrs. Lowe re-ceived a scholarship to and attended Mary Hardin Baylor University in Belton majoring in English.
During World War II Mrs. Lowe worked as a clerk for the Army Air Corp at in Hondo, Texas.
After the war she married Ray Cecil and lived in Huntsville. They soon separated and she returned to Crockett where she gave birth to their son, John Larry. After her divorce she worked as a bookkeeper for Bennie Ellis Insurance. She later met and married Milton Lowe and they eventually moved to Ft. Worth where she worked for L.T. Barton Insurance for 35 years before retiring in 1988.
During her life she loved to sing in church choirs and often served as a Sunday School/Bible Study teacher. She also loved writing, especially stories about the Bible and her family heritage, quilting, painting, knitting and embroidering, as well as other hobbies. Mrs. Lowe had a passion for reading, especially historical stories and Christian literature.
Survivors include her son John Larry Lowe and wife Ines, of Plano; grandson Jeffrey Mi-chael Lowe, of Dallas; sister Margaret Gant, of Crescent, Okla.
Preceded in death by her husband Milton; sister Ruby Petty; and brother James Ferguson.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alta Mae Ferguson Lowe were held Saturday, March 11, at the First Baptist Church of Crockett.

Mrs. LaHoma LaRue LaMance, age 94 of Houston, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2006 at her residence in Houston. Mrs. LaMance was born February 28, 1911 in Lovelady and resided in Houston most of her lifetime. Mrs. LaMance was a legal secretary for a title company attorney and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her daughters Charline Johnson and husband James, of Houston and Barbara Muller, of Deer Park; grandchildren Maurice Alan Johnson and wife Vickie, of Sugar Land, Starlia Jeanne Moore and husband Doug, of Charlottesville, Va. and Monique DeLynn, of Houston; great-grandchildren Stuart Rogers Moore, Char-lottesville, Va., Natasha Fletcher and husband Zachary, of Houston and Mandy Renee Avila and husband Edgar, of Katy; great-great-granddaugh-ter Mia Bella Avila, of Katy.

Grady Lake Jr.

Mr. Grady B. Lake, Jr., age 80 of Crockett, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Lake was born January 4, 1926 in Crockett and had lived in Crockett all of his life. Mr. Lake was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Pacific Campaign during World War II. Mr. Lake was a member and past president of the Jay-cees and was also a member of the Search and Rescue. Mr. Lake was president of Kappa Alpha Fraternity at SMU and graduated with a BBA at North Texas University. Mr. Lake was a rancher, cotton farmer and businessman. Mr. Lake was an avid sailor and pilot and also a member of the First Baptist Church of Crockett. Mr. Lake will be missed by everyone that knew him.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Joanne E. Lake, of Crockett; son Mr. James Bryan Lake and his wife Rena New-ton, of Crockett; daughter Mrs. Elsie Anne Berry and her husband Dr. Nell M. Mr. Jeff C. Krenek, age 79 of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Cen-ter in Tyler. Mr. Krenek was born September 27, 1926 in Houston County and had lived in Houston County all of his lifetime. Mr. Krenek was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. Mr. Krenek was re-tired and had worked for Houston County Electrical Coop for over 30 years. Mr. Krenek was a member of the American Legion #134 and the V.F.W. Mr. Krenek was a farmer and rancher and was also a member of the St. Francis of the Tejas Catholic Church in Crockett.

Mrs. Dorothy Lea Knight, age 74 of Crockett, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Knight was born March 8, 1932 in Houston County and lived in Houston County most of her lifetime. Mrs. Knight was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge and also a member of the Garden Oaks Baptist Church in Houston.

Tracy Jones

Ms. Tracy Jean Jones, age 35 of Grapeland, passed away on February 18, 2006. Ms. Jones fought a courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer and encouraged further research and awareness. Ms. Jones was a free spirit who found good in everybody and never met a stranger. Ms. Jones moved to Grapeland from California in 1999.
Ms. Jones has worked at Curves for Women, Brass Lantern and her last job at Smitty's BBQ. Ms. Jones loved meeting new people and serving her faithful customers and greeted everyone with a smile on her face.
Ms. Jones enjoyed spending time with her children, camping and fishing and enjoyed watching movies with her family and friends and going to concerts. Ms. Jones was a member of the Harvest Church of Crockett where she was beloved and will be missed.
Ms. Jones got her final wish to spend time with her sons before she passed away.
Survivors include her mother Paula Gray and her husband Mark; father Gary Jones and his wife Tammy; devoted fiance Jerry Copeland; sons Kyle, Kevin and his girlfriend Sarah Prince and Kody Lowe; sister Lisa who will cher-ish all of Tracy's antics as children; nephews and nieces Chase, Haden, Caitlin and Leanna Baker who will miss her dearly; loving brother Ricky Holt; she finally got the girl she always wanted in Keira Ann Lowe; beloved niece of Kenny and Sharon Knowles, Larry Hall, Gary Gaut and Jim and Kathy Jones.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Luker Swift Johnson, age 83 of Conroe, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006 in Park Manor in Conroe. Mrs. Johnson was born July 16, 1922 in Ratcliff and lived in Houston most of her lifetime and had also lived in Lufkin for several years before moving to Conroe. Mrs. Johnson was retired having worked for the Bank of Southwest in the record keeping department and was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

James Jefferies

Mr. James Richard "Jim" Jeffries, age 71 of Crockett, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Jeffries was born April 11, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa and had owned property in Houston County for 36 years and a full time resident of Crockett since 1986. Mr. Jeffries was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean Conflict in 1951-1955 as a parachute rigger 3rd class. Mr. Jeffries was a member of the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association and was also a member of the Civic Center Auction Committee, and was a well known artist and sculptor. Mr. Jeffries was a member of the St. Francis of the Tejas Catholic Church in Crockett.

Gloria McKnight James was born September 19, 1952 in Crockett the oldest of 6 children of L.D. "Goat" James and Cilla Mae James who precede her in death. She accepted Christ and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She attended Ralph Bunche High School.
Gloria passed away on March 6, 2006 in a Tyler Hospital.

Linda Hunt

Mrs. Linda Beard Hunt, of Crockett, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett. The daughter of H.J. Beard and Annie Mae Blackmon Beard was born on July 12, 1947 near Crockett. Mrs. Hunt lived in Houston County most of her lifetime and lived in Leon County for a time, and graduated from Centerville High School.
Mrs. Hunt will be remembered as a very caring and giving person. Mrs. Hunt served two terms as District Clerk of Houston County, and prior to that was employed by Houston County Electric Cooperative and Collins Tractor Company. In spite of health problems which forced her retirement in 1993, she continued to lead an active life, car-ing for her family and friends. A born-again Christian, Mrs. Hunt was a member of the South Loop Church of Christ and also worshipped regularly with her family at Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband Lonnie Hunt, of Crockett; two daughters Carin Linda Balusek and Bobby, of San Diego, Calif. and Leslie Diane Hunt, of Crockett; one granddaughter Alexis Cheyenne Balusek; three sisters Annie Reynoso and husband Leo, of Coldspring, Glenda Lou Mosely and husband H.L., of Lake Livingston and Gail Grif-fin and husband Dwight, of Crockett; one brother H.J. Bill Hooks

Mr. Bill Hooks, age 74 of Colmesneil, passed away Sun-day, March 19, 2006 at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston. Mr. Hooks was born July 1, 1931 to Norman and Mabel Hollingsworth Hooks in Trinity County. Mr. Hooks was a longtime resident of Colmesneil and was employed with Allison Chevrolet. Mr. Hooks was a U.S. Navy vet-eran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Clinton Victor "Rusty" Holt, age 76 of Point Blank, formerly of Lovelady, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2006 in the Memorial Hospital in Lufkin. Mr. Holt was born March 26, 1930 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma and had lived in Point Blank for the past three years, previously living in Lovelady. Mr. Holt was retired having worked as an electrician and was a member of the Family Faith Center in Huntsville.

Mrs. Michelle Holsey, age 36 of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006 in Prien, Germany. Mrs. Holsey was born June 1, 1969 in Alvin and had lived all of her lifetime in Crockett. Mrs. Holsey was a member of the Cal-vary Baptist Church where she served as children's Sunday school teacher for many years and was also very in-volved in the children's ministry. Mrs. Holsey had worked as the office manager for Crockett Sand and Gravel.

Pat Haley

Mrs. Pat Elizabeth Creath Haley, age 92, passed away Friday, December 30, 2005 at Whitehall Nursing Home. Mrs. Haley was born June 6, 1913 in the Creath Community of Houston County to Moffen Baskin and Mary Maude Steed Creath. After completing high school at Belott, she studied to become a hairdresser and successfully passed the State Exam. Mrs. Haley worked in Crockett until she married Paul Francis Haley, a soldier from Penn-sylvania. After Paul's service time, they moved to Hunker, Pa., where they lived until Paul retired and they moved to Houston County. Mrs. Haley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Crockett, where she was an Elder and Clerk of Session.
Survivors include her sister Jeanette Creath Crell, of Crockett; sister-in-law Lucille Duvall Creath, of Ft. Worth; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband Paul Haley in 1986.

Weldon Griffin

Mr. Weldon Griffin, age 76 of Crockett, previously of Deer Park, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at his residence in Crockett. Mr. Griffin was born October 24, 1929 in Timpson and lived most of his lifetime in Deer Park and the last 18 years in Crockett. Mr. Griffin played football in High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Era and was also on the Army Football Team. Mr. Griffin was past presi-dent of the Colt League Baseball in Deer Park. Mr. Griffin was also a member and deacon of the St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park and was an avid fisherman and dominoes.

Mrs. Lucille Gilmore, age 85 of Lufkin, formerly of Trinity County, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2006 in a Lufkin Hospital. Mrs. Gilmore was born September 4, 1920, in Trinity County to Sleeta (Andrews) and Marion Stepleton. Mrs. Gilmore was a homemaker and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister, and her greatest love was her family. Mrs. Gilmore was an avid gardener and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Mrs. Gilmore was formerly a resident of Trinity County, she had resided in Lufkin for the past 16 years.

Mr. Robert Garwood, age 81, departed his earthly life on Monday, March 6, 2006. Mr. Garwood was a veteran of WWII and a resident of Crockett since 1986. Mr. Garwood's happiest times were the 54 years he was married to Bea, and his other joys in life were his family and his church. Mr. Garwood's humor, quick wit and loving example will be truly missed. Mr. Garwood was a wonderful dad and a devoted grandpa. We are all lucky to have known such a good and caring man.

James Garner

Mr. James Gregory "Greg" Garner, left this world on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 for a better one after battling a lengthy illness. Mr. Garner was born June 28, 1962 in Austin. Mr. Garner had a wonderful sense of humor, which he maintained throughout his illness. Mr. Garner loved his family, the outdoors, music, football, playing his guitar and reading the Bible and took special pride and delight in his daughter Siobhan. Besides using his God-given gifts to work in commercial art, he also worked in sales and as a chef during his life.

Mrs. Reba English Gadberry, age 90 of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2006 in the Whitehall Nurs-ing Center in Crockett. Mrs. Gadberry was born January 25, 1916 in Kennard to George A. and Myrtie Dominy English. Mrs. Gadberry was a graduate of Douglass High School in Nacogdoches County and had lived in Crockett for the past 25 years. Mrs. Gadberry was a past member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gadberry had been employed by North American Aircraft in Dallas and had retired from J.C. Penney's and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Mrs. Emmons was a L.V.N. nurse and worked for 35 years for the Grapeland Hospital, Grapeland Nursing Home, Houston County Nursing Home, Whitehall Nursing Home, Crockett Clinic, and Leisure Lodge. Mrs. Emmons was a member of the Countryside Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children Oweta Wright, of Orange, Carolyn Harris and husband Jack, of Fairfield, Gwen Reed and husband Danny, of Clayton, Celia Whitehead and husband Winston, of Grapeland, Robin Emmons and wife Hye Ja, of Wisconsin, D.R. Emmons and wife Pearl Ann, of Trinity, and William Emmons and wife Peggy, of Grapeland; sister Doris Jordan, of Lubbock; 23 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents Samuel C. Day and Ina Belle Criso Day; husband Lawson D. Emmons in 1996; son-in-law Narrel Wright; sister Imagene Day; brother Clifton Day; granddaughter Katrina Wright; grand-son Sammy Emmons; and an infant granddaughter.

Mack Edward Easterling was born January 15, 1951 to S.H. and Gwendolyn Cobbs Easterling in Crockett. He graduated from Ralph Bunche High School in 1969.An avid horseman he retired from Sears as a truck driver.
Life’s departure was on Feb-ruary 17, 2006 in Dallas. Sur-vivors are: wife Emma and children; Patrick, Gwendolyn, and Shameka of Dallas, 7 grandchildren, mother; Gwen-dolyn Easterling, brother; Douglas (Bobbie) Easterling of Crockett, sisters; LaVert Reese (James) and Ruby East-erling of Dallas, Ada Hackney and Annie Ross of Crockett, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mrs. Faye Ellen Dykes, age 77 of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Dykes was born September 12, 1928 in Florence and had lived in Crockett for the past 16 years. Mrs. Dykes was retired having worked as an office manager for Clear Creek Drainage District and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Crockett.

Jasper Driskell

Mr. Jasper Driskell, age 95 of Crockett, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday evening, April 25, 2006. Mr. Driskell was born May 2, 1910 in Lovelady and had lived in Houston County all of his lifetime.
Mr. Driskell graduated from Lovelady High School and attended business school. Mr. Driskell was a member of the Lovelady Masonic Lodge #539 for 65+years serving as past worshipful master, secretary and treasurer for a number of years, and he held every office they had.
Mr. Driskell was a trustee of Crockett ISD and served as president, a member of the Lion's Club, and the Davy Crockett Lodge #193 Knights of the Phythians, and commandery #91 Knights Templar for 50+years. Mr. Driskell was also a member of the First Christian Church in Crockett where he served as deacon, Ameritus, and trustee of the Church.
Mr. Driskell was retired having been owner and operator of Driskell Farm Service for 42 years from 1939-1981. Mr. Driskell was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years and 11 months, Verna Arnold Driskell, of Crockett; three children John A. Driskell and wife Karla, of Houston, Linda Butler and husband Jim, of Dickinson and Tommy Driskell and wife Jeanie, of Crockett; 10 grandchildren Johnny Driskell, Jr., Sarita Driskell, Angela Driskell, Eric Driskell, Ashlee Driskell, Thomas "Tom" Butler, Helenanne Tritico, Tommy Driskell Jr., Jim Driskell and Will Driskell; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Billie Ruth Dominy, age 75 of Kennard, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Dominy was born August 9, 1930 in Austonio and had lived in Kennard most of her life-time. Mrs. Dominy was retired and had worked as a phone solicitor and was a member of the Mt. Olive Church.

Mrs. Virginia Faye Cutler, age 81 of Grapeland, passed away March 16, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Cutler was born April 19, 1924 in Liberty Hill Community to Jesse Robert and Alva Retta Holcomb Moore. Mrs. Cutler was a homemaker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Grapeland.

Jennie Cox

Mrs. Jennie Cox, age 90 of Crockett, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2006 after a brief illness at East Texas Medical Center. Mrs. Cox was born Jennie Williamson on October 21, 1915. Mrs. Cox grew up in Kaufman with 15 siblings, several which were twins. Mrs. Cox married Arnold Cox and lived in Pasadena, before moving to Crockett in the early 1970s. Mrs. Cox loved food and cooking as much as she loved blue grass music, and her kind heart and tenacity were an anchor for family and friends. Mrs. Cox never met a stranger. Mrs. Cox will be missed greatly.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Dot and Don Hendrix, of Florida; daughter-in-law Peggy Cox, of Crockett; six grandchildren Kenneth, Stephen, Dennis, Phillip, Casey and Patton; several great-grandchildren; and a large extended "family."

Mr. Paul Copeland, age 75 of Crockett, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Copeland was born May 25, 1930 in Rusk and had been living in Crockett for the past 30 years. Mr. Copeland was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Copeland was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rusk. Mr. Copeland was retired and had worked as a logging contractor.

Mr. Billy V. Clark, age 70 of Houston County Lake, passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mr. Clark had worked for the Houston County Courier since 1985 as their advertising manager and was a member of the Good Shepherd Fellowship Church.

Mildred Bruton

Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth Caroline Poston Bruton, age 86, passed from this world on Sunday, January 8, 2006. Mrs. Bruton was born August 13, 1919 in Groveton to Woody Henderson Poston and Caroline Julia Hutto Poston. Mrs. Bruton grew up in Groveton and graduated from Groveton High School. In September 1941 she married Will T. Bruton and except for a short time during WWII, spent the rest of her life as a resident of Lovelady. Mrs. Bruton was a loving wife and mother, and a friend top many as well as an active civic member of the community. Mrs. Bruton was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church of Lovelady and the Weldon Eastern Star where she held many positions including Worthy Matron. Mrs. Bruton served on the Lovelady Evergreen Cemetery Committee for many years, and was on the board of directors of the Lovelady State Bank for 30 years.

"Butch" Bruton, III, of Lovelady; daughters Mary Ann Schaubhut and Becky Reineman and husband Richard, all of Lovelady; granddaughter Lauren Schaubhut, of Lovelady; step-grandson Jer-emy Reineman and wife Jessica, of San Jose, Calif.; nephew W.M. Kimberly Boothe

Mrs. Kimberly Kay Leediker Boothe, age 36 of Texarkana, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2006 in Northeast Texas. Mrs. Boothe and her husband Bill Boothe, were killed in a tragic highway accident. Mrs. Boothe was born December 6, 1969 in Bryan and had lived in Houston County most of her lifetime.
Mrs. Boothe had earned her Masters degree at Stephen F. Austin University with a 4.0 grade point average and graduated from Sam Houston State University, Magna Cum Laude, and was a 1988 graduate of Latexo High School where she was a member of the State Volleyball team. At Sam Houston State she was a member of the Honor So-ciety, and she held administrative and classroom certificates.
Mrs. Boothe had a profound effect on her peers and students, as she was formerly an administrator, a classroom teacher, and girl's volleyball coach in the Crockett Independent School District, where her teams held winning re-cords over the four years including district and area honors. At the time of her death, she was an assistant principal at Texas High School of the Texarkana Independent School District where she loved the students, staff and admini-stration. Mrs. Boothe was loved and respected by her family, friends, peers and students.
Survivors include her sons Jacob Cody Young and Ryan Mayes Young, of Crockett; step-children W. Christo-pher Boothe, Ashley Boothe and Austin Boothe, of Grapeland; proud parents Kay Leaverton and Chester Dale Leediker, of Crockett; loving brothers James Lucas and wife Stacy, Dale Leediker and fiance Brandy Dotson and Kenny Leediker, all of Crockett; loving sister Kristi Leediker Dunbar and husband Josh, of Texarkana; and numer-ous other beloved relatives, including nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Jack Bohannon, age 67 of Houston, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Bohannon was born June 24, 1938 in Rusk and had lived in Houston since 1964. Mr. Bohannon received a Bachelor's degree in Astronomy from L.S.U. and a Master's Degree in Physics from the University of Houston. Mr. Bohannon was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Bohannon was a pilot instructor and had retired from NASA having worked as an Aerospace Engineer and was of the Baptist faith.

Johnnie Mae Beasley was born March 4, 1954 in Mil-ford, Texas to Lewis and Leora Beasley. She attended the Electra Public Schools. At an early age she moved to Crockett and lived here until her demise on April 24, 2006. She had worked at Crockett Care Center for several years.

Mrs. Patsy Ann Burton Bates Aulbach, age 80 of Crockett, formerly of Huntsville, went to be with Jesus on Fri-day, February 17, 2006. Mrs. Aulbach was born November 25, 1925 in Lone Pine and had been living in Crockett, previously she had lived in Huntsville where she was a resident of the Carriage Inn for three years. Mrs. Aulbach had worked as a supervisor for Woolworth and was of the Lutheran Faith.

Mr. Bill Allen, age 49 of Houston County Lake, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Al-len was born June 12, 1956 in Madison, Tennessee and had been living at the Houston County Lake. Mr. Allen had served in the U.S. Coast Guard during peacetime. Mr. Allen had worked as an aircraft mechanic.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Bill Allen were held Monday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m. in the Leech Cemetery in Charlotte, Tennessee.

Glen Alford

Mr. Glen Robert Alford, age 85 of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 in the Mya Nursing Home in Palestine. Mr. Alford was born May 27, 1920 in Creek to Guy and Tina Mae Alford and was a resident of Hous-ton County for most of his life. Mr. Alford enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately following the attack of Pearl Har-bor and spent over two years in the South Pacific as a radioman on a destroyer. Mr. Alford's ship participated in several battles including Guadalcanal and the Midway Islands and he was discharged on October 3, 1945 as a Third Class Petty Officer. Mr. Alford was retired and had worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Austonio Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sister Mamie Dean, of Pasadena; brother Donald Alford, of Poway, Calif.; seven nieces; six nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife Bonnie Alford; parents Guy Alford and Tina Mae Barbee Alford; brother Guy Al-ford; and sisters Irma Douglass and Ella Mae Smith.
Funeral Services for Mr. Glen Robert Alford were held Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the Austonio Baptist Church with the Rev. Ottis Byers officiating. Interment followed in the Creek Cemetery.
