Nell Shivers Bridges, 91, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.

 

Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Reverend Mark Metzger officiating. Burial is to be at Squaw Creek Cemetery in Glen Rose, Texas under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Charles W. Bridges. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

 

Mrs. Bridges was born August 28, 1915, in Crockett, Texas, the daughter of Houston County pioneers, John William Shivers and Annie Mae Simpson Shivers. She attended Crockett schools and Southwestern University, located in Georgetown, Texas, graduating with honors in 1937. At Southwestern she was Tri-Delt President and her junior year she was chosen Miss Southwestern. Later she received two Master's Degrees from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.

 

She taught in Crockett, Sweetwater, Glen Rose, and for seventeen years in Fort Worth. She also taught in the graduate school at North Texas State University.

 

In 1941 she married Charles W. Bridges of Glen Rose. He died in 1976. A former resident of Glen Rose, Midlothian, Fort Worth, she moved to Sweetwater in 1977 after his death.

 

Mrs. Bridges was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Alpha Chi Scholarship Society, Fort Worth American Association of University Women, and Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for teacher.

 

In Sweetwater, she was a member of the Book Review Club and former president of the Sorosis Club. She attended the First Methodist Church, serving on the board and in the United Methodist Women's Group.

 

Survivors include two nieces, Margaret Bishop and Joyce Nell Wright, both of Sweetwater; a nephew, Jack Bridges and wife Bobbie Lou, and two nieces, Nancy Keese and Mary Lee Lilly, all of Glen Rose, Texas; two nephews, George Beall and Edward Beall, of Portland, Oregon; and several great nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, Elizabeth Bishop and Wilma Brann Sparks, and brother, John Franklin Shivers.

 

Honorary Pallbearers will be Frank Conard, Robert Pieper, Tere Lawrence, Jack Lawrence, Jere Lawrence, Charles Reeves, Ben Turner, and Alton Pyburn.
