Mrs. Opal E. Hartnett Adams, age 86, of the Weldon Community, passed
away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in the Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
She was born February 10, 1925 in Weldon and had lived the Weldon
Community most of her lifetime. Mrs. Adams was a member of the
Weldon Civic Club and was also a member of the Weldon Baptist
Church. She was retired having worked as a bank teller. Survivors
include husband of 68 years, Charlie Adams of Weldon; sons, Charlie
W. Adams, Jr. and wife, Mary of Lovelady, Gary Boyd Adams and
friend, Amie of Weldon; granddaughters, Donna Smith and husband,
Kenny of Lovelady, Pam Wooley and husband, Darryl of Austonio;
great-grandchildren, Lauren, Katie, Taylor, Jordan and Joe; sisters,
Atholine Adams of Lovelady, Yvette Freeman of Lovelady; numerous

Mr. Dudley Douglas English,73, went to be with the Lord Thursday,
March 10, 2011 in Tallahassee, Fl. He passed away peacefully
surrounded by his family. He was beloved husband of Janet Nezat
English for 51 years. He is adored father of Kay English, Stewart
(Mary Beth) English and Cheryl English. The blessed grandfather of
five grandchildren: Wesley Mitchell of Salem, Va., Joshua Rogers and
Jacob Rogers of Branden, Fl and Mary Elizabeth English and Justin
English of Havana, Fl. Dudley graduated from Lamar University in
Beaumont, Tx in 1961 with a degree in chemical engineering and was
president of 7th. Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He retired from
the Olin Corporation in St. Marks, Fl. after twenty years of
service. Dudley was born August 11, 1937 to George Dewey and Mamie
Marie (Williams) English in Beaumont,Tx.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 2:00
p.m. at the Ratcliff Antioch Cemetery with Rev. Jim Tom Ainsworth

Bobby Gene English passed away on Thursday, March 10th, 2011, at the
age of 78, in Lufkin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his
parents, the late Rena Hager English and George “Buck” English and
his late wife Pat English. He leaves behind his loving wife of 11
years Mignon English, daughters Sherry Batey and husband Lynn of
Shepherd and Sandy English and husband Donald of Hagerville,
grandchildren Michael Wells and wife Macey, Randi Tomlinson,
Christopher Batey and wife Ginger, Dana Batey, Justin Murray and
wife Tasha, Daniel Murray and wife Macie, Mason Murray, niece
Maureen Cromeans, nephews Jimmy Bumpers and Jay English; numerous
great-grandchildren, other family members and special friends. Bobby
was born September 6th, 1932 at the old Stephen Alexander English
homeplace in the farming community of Hagerville outside Kennard,
Texas and still lived down the road from his birthplace until his
passing. He retired from the Conoco Oil Company tugboat fleet as
captain and pilot after 20 years. He served in the Navy as an airman
from 1951 to 1954.
Funeral services for Mr. Bobby Gene English will be held Sunday,
March 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel.
Interment will follow in the Enon Cemetery. Family will receive
friends Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers are Michael Wells,

Mrs. Hazel Millwee, age 72, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, March
15, 2011 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. She was born
September 9, 1938 in St. Joseph, Louisiana and had lived in Crockett
most of her lifetime. Mrs. Millwee was a member of the V. F. W.
Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a
homemaker and attended the Baptist Church. Survivors include son,
James Millwee of Crockett; daughter, Deborah Johnson and husband,
Carl of Conroe; grandchildren, Jami Johnson and John Johnson of
Conroe, Samantha Vaughn of Crockett, Jeanne Millwee of Latexo,
Daniel Millwee of Dallas, Luke Crowson and Cody Crowson of
Grapeland; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceded in
death by husband of 50 years, W. C. Millwee; sons, Billy Millwee and
Bobby Millwee; daughter Pamela K. Crowson; grandsons, Robbie Vaughn

VIRGIL GROAT
Mr. Virgil Groat, age 76, of Crockett, Texas, passed away Monday,
March 14, 2011 in ETMC-Tyler. He was born September 1, 1934 in
Cherokee County, Oklahoma to Floyd and Cuba Thorton Groat. After
serving 4 years in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from Oklahoma State
University, where he met Euleta, his wife of 52 years. After
graduation, he began his 32-year career with TXU, which took him to
Wichita Falls, Lamesa, and Arlington. After retirement, he moved to
Crockett, where he has lived for the past 12 years.
He believed in volunteerism and has received numerous awards from
civic and charitable organizations for his contributions over the
years. After arriving in Crockett, he devoted his time to the First
Baptist Church as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and in the
television ministry; as a volunteer for the ETMC maintenance
department.; and as an ambassador for the Crockett Area Chamber of
Commerce, where he was known as the Chamber’s “Free Spirit.” Prior
to moving to Crockett, he was a member of the Optimist Club, the
Kiwanis, the American Cancer Society, and was instrumental in
establishing the first Girl’s Softball League in Lamesa, Texas. He
also enjoyed world travel and always had a story to tell about his
adventures.
Survivors include wife, Euleta Groat of Crockett; daughters, Reanna
Foster and husband, Bruce of Flat Rock, North Carolina, Ardita Vick
and husband, James of Dallas, Delia Groat of Mansfield;
grandchildren, Matthew Vick of Houston, Zachary Vick of Norman,
Oklahoma, Irene Groat of Mansfield; numerous nieces, nephews and
other relatives. Preceded in death by parents, Floyd and Cuba Groat;

Robert Lee Hazlett, Jr. age 78, of Crockett, Texas passed away
Wednesday, March 16 at his family home. March 16 was the day our
loved one died, but we lost him 3 years ago to Alzheimer’s. Robert
Hazlett was born August 15, 1932 in Houston County and lived in
Houston County for the majority of his life.
In 1952, Robert married Jane Salisbury and this began their 58 year
journey together. The Oil and Gas Industry took Robert and Jane to
Jal, New Mexico, the Permian Basin, Louisiana, Alabama and
Mississippi. He was knowledgeable in the operation of natural gas
processing plants, drilling operations and production. In 1991, he
retired from Mitchell Energy as East Texas District Superintendent.
Upon retirement, Robert and Jane raised cattle on their ranch near
Crockett and traveled through the United States. Robert was a member
of Lovelady First United Methodist Church, and was a 50-year, 32nd
Degree Mason.
Survivors include wife, Jane Salisbury Hazlett, son Jim Hazlett and
wife Becky of Midland, Texas, a daughter, Karen Dailey and husband
Mitch of Crockett, and a son, Joel Hazlett and wife Sherri of
Crockett. Grandchildren include Jarod Hazlett, Krista Weathers and
husband, Adam, Morgan Sebree and husband, Justin, Laura Hazlett,
Courtney Allen and Kati Hazlett, Ashley Crabtree and husband, Josh,
Jill Goyens and husband, Chris, Robert Mitchell Dailey and wife

March 17, 2011 in the Winfield Healthcare in Crockett. She was born
September 20, 1924 in Augusta, Texas and had lived in Houston
County, previously living in Corsicana. Mrs. Turner was a member of
the Latexo Alumni Association and the Ephesus Baptist Church. She
was retired having worked for 40 years at Miller Brothers Hat
Factory. Mrs. Turner loved kids, games and was an avid sports fan of
Latexo School.
Survivors include son, John Owens Turner and wife, Marilyn of Latexo;
grandchildren, Ashley Michelle Currie and husband, Bradley of

a member of the North Loop Baptist Church. He enjoyed coon hunting

U. S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam
War. Mr. English was retired having worked for the Texas Department
of Criminal Justice System and was of the Baptist Faith.

J. Griffin, age 91, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011
in the Houston County Nursing Home. Mr. Griffin was born September
29, 1919 in Houston County, Texas and was a graduate of Crockett
High School Class of 1937. He had lived in Crockett most of his
lifetime. Mr. Griffin was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served
during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in
Crockett and was also a member of the American Legion Post # 134, D.
A. V. and the S. P. J. S. T. Mr. Griffin was a retired truck driver
having owned and operated his own trucking business.
Survivors include wife, Doris Griffin of Crockett; sons and
daughters-in-law, David Frank Griffin and Glendia of Palestine,
Dwight Griffin and Gail of Crockett, Don Griffin and Darla of

Fran Goolsby age 88, departed this world in the presence of her six
children and loving family and entered heaven on 3/27/2011 in
Crockett, TX. Fran was born June 12, 1922 in Linton, North Dakota to
Ellis and Anna Merrill. Fran lived in South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan
and Corpus Christi, TX before settling in Crockett, TX in 1947.
Fran was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening
and canning. She was happiest when she had a house full of family
and friends to cook for. Fran had a generous heart and enjoyed
sharing her talent with others.
Fran was a veteran of the US Navy serving as a pharmacists mate
until she was honorably discharged on 11/11/1946. She was employed
as an office nurse for Dr. A. B. Brown. A member and Elder of First
Presbyterian Church, past president of First Presbyterian Church
Women, the Redbud Garden Club, Latexo Extension Homemakers, Home
Extension Council, the Davy Crockett Pilot Club and past member of
the Texas Hospital Volunteers. Fran was a volunteer at ETMC
Crockett.
Survivors include: Daughters: Judy Morgan and husband Bill of Latexo,
Linda Horton of Latexo, Ann Shroyer and husband John of Crockett.
Sons: John Danner and wife Sammy of Latexo, David Goolsby and wife
Linda of Latexo, Mike Goolsby and wife Connie of Latexo.
Grandchildren: Tim Morgan, Rebecca Shroyer, Rachel Shroyer, Melinda
Goolsby, Jessica Cutshall, Jo Lane, Harmonie Seaton, Martha Worley,

2010. Mrs. Peterson was born April 27, 1918 in Houston County, near
Grapeland. She was the eighth child of eleven born to John Colin
Lawrence and Lura Eugenia (Genie) Williams Lawrence. She was raised
in Houston County, where she remained until moving to Houston in
1942. She returned to Crockett in 1984 after the death of her
husband, William A. Peterson. Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by
her husband, her parents and all of her brothers and sisters. She is
survived by her son and two daughters along with their spouses: Troy
and Patricia Walling of Magnolia; Betty and Jerry Kanka of
Spicewood; and Thelma Peterson of Tomball. Her five grandchildren:
Sherrie Walling Nielsen, Michael Walling, Kelly Wilson King, Charles
(Chuck) Wilson; and Jason Kanka. Her 12 great grandchildren:
Courtney Brown Kirkpatrick; Kristen Moreno; Sara Walling, Emily
Walling, Ava Walling, Ashley Brooke Whitlock, Sydney King, Chaz
Wilson, Whitney Wilson, Ethan Kanka, Ransom Kanka and Fisher Kanka.

Mrs.
Theresa Overstreet, age 96 of Crockett, passed away Sunday, April 3,
2011 peacefully at home with her family. Mrs. Overstreet was born
June 25, 1914 in Grapeland, Texas. She moved to Crockett, Texas in
1927 where her father and mother, William E. “Bill” Keeland and
Frances Royall Keeland, started their business. Mrs. Overstreet was
married to Robert Clifford “Bob” Overstreet Sr. for 55 years.
Mrs. Overstreet was a very active person. She loved hunting and
spending time with her family. Most of her time was spent watching
her grandchildren in every different sport. There was never an
activity that she missed. She loved to watch horse racing, Wheel of
Fortune, and even playing guitar hero at the age of 95! She was a
very loving daughter, mother, and grandmother. She had a very
humorous and out-going personality.
Mrs. Overstreet was a member of the First Baptist Church and loved
to be involved in activities. She served as director of Nursery for
25 years. She also taught in the junior and adult department of the
church. Other activities include the Baptist Training Union and
Girls Auxiliary. Mrs. Overstreet was a proud founding member of the
Jarrell Beasley chapter of NSDAR. She attended the organizational
meeting hosted by Miss Nell Beasley in the home of her sister Mrs.
Gail King. Mrs. RD Evans, the State Organizing Chairman, met with
them. Their first official meeting was held at the Kings Inn. Mrs.
Overstreet served as the State Chairman on the Conservation
Committee and won a first place national award. This award was the
first won for Texas. She also was a delegate for about 22 years at
the State Conference in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Overstreet is the
descendent of Francis Epps of Virginia and a member of the Killough
family. She belonged to many genealogical organizations as in
Daughter of American Colonies, Jamestown Society, Colonial Dames of
America, and Magna Carta Dames. Mrs. Overstreet was a member of the
Magnolia Garden Club, the Culture Club of Crockett, Cadman Club, and
Choral Club. She was a member of the Spring Creek Country Club, the
Tuesday Sewing Club, the Downs Aldrich Corporation, and served as
the Chairman of Historical Research. She was a member of many more
various organizations.

Mr. Adrian A. “Buddy” Davis, Jr., age 64, of Kennard, passed away
Thursday, February 10, 2011 in the Memorial Medical Center in
Lufkin. He was born August 21, 1946 in Austin, Texas and was a 1964
graduate of Crockett High School. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U.
S. Navy having served on the U.S.S. Trenton LPD-14 during Vietnam.
He received a Bachelors degree from the University of Texas in 1969
and was a graduate of South Texas Law School. Mr. Davis was a member
of the State Bar of Texas, Texas Exes and Texas Land Title
Association. He was an attorney and a member of the First Baptist
Church in Kennard.

Kappa Gamma and past president of the Texas Rural Letter Carriers
Auxiliary. She was a retired teacher and Elementary Principal for
the Kennard Independent School District. Mrs. Harrison was a member
of the First Baptist Church in Kennard where she had served as
Vacation Bible School Director, Sunday School Director, Sunday
School Teacher and the Youth Choir Director.

Mrs. Morrow died Monday, February 7, in Crockett, Texas, where she
owned and operated for more than 25 years alongside her husband,
Ray, Dairy Queen stores first in Crockett, which opened in 1955, and
across East Texas. Through the years, many shared with her their
treasured memories of times spent at the DQ, after Little League
games, Friday night football and making The Drag.
A native of Grapeland, Mrs. Morrow was born Aug. 12, 1926 (sharing
her birth date with Ray), and attended San Pedro Elementary School.
She graduated from Grapeland High School in 1944 and moved to
Crockett, where she worked for five years for Texas Power & Light.
She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist churches of
Grapeland and Crockett. In 1974, she and Ray built and moved to
Morrow Point in Golden Acres on Houston County Lake and became part
of an extended family of neighbors and close friends.
As a member of one of Crockett’s weekly bridge club groups, Mrs.
Morrow loved playing and was lucky at cards and a gracious hostess
known for her delicious food and hospitality.
She was an avid women’s tennis player and golfer in Crockett and
enjoyed many hours with her friends on the court and the course. She
spent the past 15 years living part-time at Viewpoint RV & Golf
Resort in Mesa, Ariz., where she was the friendly token Texan to
many of the international residents there.
Mrs. Morrow is survived by her daughters, Jill McGuckin of Austin
and Jane Mattox of Crockett; brother W.D. Goodnight and wife
Jeanette of Tyler; granddaughters Julie Mattox of Spring, and
Kathryn Jenkines and husband Russell and great-grandchildren Haley
and Jordan of Madisonville; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews and cousins; and many dear and cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by Ray Morrow, her husband of 48 years;
parents W.M. Goodnight and Annie Mae Rials Goodnight; sisters Willie
Dell Abshier and Frances Dee Duhon; and son-in-law Jim Mattox.

She was born June 6, 1927 in Tadmor, Texas and had lived the past 6
years in Conroe, previously living in Crockett. Mrs. McClain was
retired having worked as a supervisor for Shell Federal Credit Union
and was a member of the Baptist Church.

worked in purchasing for a Steel Manufacturing Plant and loved
racing and sports.

veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II.
He was an audio and visual specialist for the U. S. Air Force. Mr.
Rich was retired having worked for public schools and junior
colleges as a science teacher. He was a member of the Association of
Former Students of Texas A&M and was a proud member of the First
Baptist Church in Lovelady.

Evelyn Wilcox Hester was born September 20, 1912 in Pearson Chapel,
Texas and passed away January 21, 2011 at the age of 98 years, 4
months and 1 day in the Winfield Healthcare in Crockett.
She and her husband Travis Wilcox, opened a general store in which
Minnie spent most of her days waiting on customers and filling big
bills of groceries for residents of Vestula and Murray Farm. Mrs.
Hester was a faithful member of the Lovelady First United Methodist
Church and never missed a Sunday unless ill, which was almost never.
She loved her church with all her heart and read her Bible daily.
Mrs. Hester loved cooking, quilting, embroidering, crossword puzzles
and gardening; and had a spring and fall garden each year.
Survivors include daughter, Jo Ann Starns Henry and husband, Roy of
Porter Springs; one grandson, Christopher Dean Starns and wife,
Renee; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Kate Starns; one
great-grandson, Jacob Dean Starns all of the Creek Community;

Hollis Andrew Tarver known only as “Tarver”, was 76 years old and
passed away on January 20, 2011 in the East Texas Medical Center-
Tyler.
He was born in Melder, Louisiana, on July 18, 1934, to Lillie Mae
and Sam Tarver.
He started as a cab driver in Arkansas when he was 15, then at age
16, he was driving a truck across country. At age 40, he went to
work for an underground utility contractor as an operator and
supervisor, where he met and married his wife, Paula Joubert Tarver
of 36 years. They raised 7 children, he had 4, she had 1, and they
had 2 together. They raised their first set of grandchildren with
their babies. He was a family man, who very much loved his family
and the people around him, he never met a stranger. His last 12
years of working, he worked for Cordell Brick Company in Houston in
maintenance. He always loved working, just being able to get up in
the morning and go to work. When he wasn’t able to work anymore, it
was like something died in him, but he had a thirst for life and his
children and grandchildren and he lived through them. He moved his
family around a lot, said he was part Gypsy, but when we moved to
Crockett in 2002, this was the final move. He was happier here than
anywhere he had ever lived. Shortly after he moved here, he gave his
life to the Lord, and was very strong in his faith. He was a member
of the Grapeland Baptist Church. His faith is what helped him
recover from the loss of his beloved son Christopher, who died in
1997, when he was almost 22. His ashes will be interred there with
Christopher in Houston. Tarver was a wonderful husband, a great
father, a good brother and friend to all who knew him and he will be
greatly missed.

Mr. Murchison died Monday at Winfield Nursing Center in Crockett. He
was born July 28, 1941 in Houston to George Spencer and Rosalie Cox
Murchison.
Mr. Murchison was a retired supervisor from Blue Bell Ice Cream with
28 years of service. After retirement they moved to Riverside where
he enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was a member of the Riverside
United Methodist Church. Mr. Murchison served in the U.S. Army in
Germany.
Mr. Murchison was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers
Spencer Mayo Murchison and Phil Murchison. He is survived by his
wife of 18 years, Lynn Dunkerley Murchison of Riverside, a daughter
Mary Louise Burch of Albuquerque, New Mexico, sons Don Murchison and
wife Cheryl of Houston and Marc Murchison of College Station, two

Waco and was a resident of Grapeland for many years. Mrs. Pearson
attended Baylor University where she met her husband, Rev. L. R.
Pearson and they were later married on August 5, 1941. She was a
homemaker and a Pastor’s wife. Mrs. Pearson was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Lovelady.
Survivors include husband of 69 years, Rev. L. R. Pearson of
Grapeland; daughters, Pat Pyron and husband, Metz of Houston, Nancy
Rooney and husband, Larry of Grapeland, Connie Birdwell and husband,

Mrs. Elvera Poret Saucier, age 85, of Grapeland, passed away Monday,
January 16, 2011 at her residence. She was born January 19, 1925 in
Hickory, Louisiana and was a 1941 graduate of Cottonport High School
in Cottonport, Louisiana.
Mrs. Saucier was a resident of Grapeland for
many years. She was involved with her children in the P.T.O., Cub
Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of
the Garden Club and Business and Professional Women in Grapeland.
Mrs. Saucier was also a member of the St. Francis of the Tejas
Catholic Church in Crockett having served on the Ladies Guild and
was very active in the Catholic Daughters of America.

Eunice Dale Gates “Nanny” Zalesky, age 73, of Kennard, passed away
Friday, January 14, 2011 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett.
She was born December 17, 1937 in Carmona, Trinity County, Texas and
had lived all of her lifetime in Kennard. Mrs. Zalesky was a
homemaker and member of the Truth Tabernacle Church in Kennard. She
was an avid seamstress and enjoyed making dolls. Mrs. Zalesky was a
loving nanny and mother.

as a secretary.

was born October 08, 1915 in Houston County, Texas and was a
resident of Crockett for many years. She was the wife of Burke L.
Hallmark until his death on Jan 19, 1996. Mrs. Hallmark was a former
member of the First Baptist Church in Kennard and First Baptist
Church in Crockett. She was a housewife.
Survivors include one child, Shirley Hallmark Goodwin and husband,
Dr. Charles Goodwin of Atlanta, Georgia area; three grandchildren,

Mrs. Emma Pauline Westbrook, age 90, of Latexo, passed away
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 in the Pine Ridge Healthcare in
Livingston. She was born December 20, 1920 in Angleton, Texas and
had lived most of her lifetime in Latexo. Mrs. Westbrook was retired
from Champion Papers in Pasadena where she had worked as a secretary
with 40 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star and the First Baptist Church in Latexo.
Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives
including; great niece and care giver: Sheila Koperna and husband,
Bill of Livingston and great-great- niece, Stacie Walton of

John
R. Shaver "Johnny" went to be with the Lord on December 30, 2010 in
Conroe, Texas at the age of 86. He was born in Grapeland, Texas on
November 15, 1924 to Willis and Adelaide Shaver.
He joined the Navy Seabees in the 1940′s during WWII and was in the
South Pacific corridor.
After the war he returned to Crockett where he
met and married Martha Ann Spence. They had one son, John Rodney
Shaver, Jr. and lived in Crockett, Texas. Johnny retired from Entex
as Manager of the Crockett office after thirty-seven years of
service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
Crockett, a member of the Lothrop Masonic Lodge #21 of Crockett and
retired from the Crockett Volunteer Fire Department presiding as
Fire Chief during that time. He loved being with his family and his
many friends, along with fishing and hunting.
John is preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Ann Spence
Shaver, father Willis Shaver, mother Adelaide Selkirk Shaver,
brother George Willis Shaver, sister-in-law Charlyne Matchett
Shaver, sister-in-law Peggy Spence Freshour, brother-in-law James
Cecil, niece Jo Anna Cecil, and nephew Marty Freshour.
He is survived by his son John Rodney Shaver Jr. and wife Barbara
Norrid Shaver of Kingwood, TX; Sister, Marjorie Shaver Cecil;
Grandson, Eddie Norrid of Deer Park, TX; great grandchildren Lexi
and Riley Norrid; sister-in-law, Doris Spence Griffin; nieces,

Army having served during World War II. He was a retired painter and

Hazel McAnally, age 96, of Pasadena, passed away Friday, December
24, 2010 in the Bayshore Hospital in Pasadena. She was born
September 13, 1914 in Mt. Selman, Texas, and had been living in
Pasadena for the past 11 years. Mrs. McAnally had worked as a clerk
for Craven and Dargins Insurance and was a member of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Mt. Selman.
Survivors include two sisters, Frances Loretta Blaylock and husband,
Thomas Winston of Houma, Ouida Sanderson of Pasadena, numerous
nieces, nephews and other relatives including, Sandee and Stan Davis
