CLIVE EDWIN ”BUBBA” DICKEY, JR.
A fifth generation Texan, Mr. Clive Edwin Dickey, Jr. was born on
November 10, 1938 in Crockett, Texas. After a lengthy and most
valiant battle with leukemia, he departed this earth on November 1,
2011 in Tyler, Texas, saying goodbye to the love of his life, his
helpmate, friend and wife of 37 years, Patricia Evans Dickey.
Together they enjoyed life, their friends and a huge family. With
Pat’s unwavering support and devotion to Bubba, his life was no
doubt extended beyond what most doctors could even imagine, with
many calling him a walking miracle. Exuberant and charismatic, Bubba
loved life and was often considered larger than life itself. His
inspirational advice affected so many around him, including many
strangers: “Good, better, best! Never let it rest until your good is
better and your better, best” and “Live life to its fullest.” Bubba
shared his contagious laughter, telling jokes and stories wherever
he went. His mission was to make someone laugh each day. Even at the
end of his journey, Bubba still exhibited his witty personality,
telling funny stories “on” and to everyone who visited and making
the nurses want to hear more. As a Boy Scout, Bubba attended the
National Jamboree in Irvine, CA , an event he often spoke of with
pride. He graduated from Crockett High School in 1957. An avid
golfer, Bubba played college golf at Schriner and Sam Houston State
where he was the captain of the team. Over the years, he continued
golfing, belonging to Oak Cliff Country Club and Spring Creek
Country Club. Though his illness challenged his game, he wanted to
continue playing golf, and in May of this year, he managed to play
three more holes. He and Pat loved to travel, and perhaps his most
memorable trip was to the 34th Ryder Cup in Warwick Shire, England,
closely followed by travel to Germany and Scotland. After Bubba
received his diagnosis, he grew determined to take his family on a
Caribbean cruise, which he did. Unbelievably, Bubba and Pat’s most
recent trip was only one month ago when he drove Pat to celebrate
her birthday in New Orleans. Up until the last week of his life, he
continued to relive this most wonderful experience by describing,
with precise detail, the places they visited and the meals they,
especially the creme brulee at Galatoires. As a young adult, Bubba
lived in Longview, Texas, operated and co-owned Bubba’s discount
store and served as president of the Jaycees. He also served on the
Texas National Guard as a staff sergeant and tank commander. Bubba
later owned a manufacturer’s rep. firm located at the World Trade
Center where he served on the advisory board of the Center. While in
Dallas, he and Pat belonged to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.
March 19, 1971 was one of the happiest days of Bubba’s life when his
precious daughter, Carol Michelle was born, making him a daddy. When
he married Pat, Bubba was additionally blessed with a son, Bobby Ray
Bridwell. In 1988, Bubba and Pat moved to Crockett where he opened
an Ambrosia Water distributorship which later became Music Mountain
Water company. He served as President of the Houston County Chamber
of Commerce and as a proud Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow. After
selling Music Mountain, he became a realtor and joined Pat at
Coldwell Banker, Pat Dickey Realtors. With his help, they expanded
the franchise to include Coldwell Banker Choice Realtors in
Nacogdoches, Texas. He was an active member and supporter of the
Crockett Boys and Girls Club and a member of the All Saint’s
Episcopal Church. Preceded in death by his parents Clive and Julia
Satterwhite Dickey; and his great nephew Jordan David Ellis. Bubba
is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Patricia
Evans Dickey, of Crockett; sister Carol Dickey Watson, of Crockett;
children Michelle Dickey Jacobs, of Denver and Bobby Ray Bridwell
and wife Dawn, of San Antonio; grandchildren Jack and Julia Jacobs,
Luke and Claire Keene, and Stuart and Alex Biltz; blessed with an
extremely loving, close and large family, numerous other relatives:
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Leonard Lee Evans and wife
Martha, Roger Dale Evans and wife Karen, John Williams Evans and
wife Jamie, Larry Ray Evans and wife Hope and Ronnie Wayne Evans,
Linda Evans Childs and husband Terry, Brenda Evans Bottoms and
husband Charles, and Doris Evans Page and husband Danny; nieces and
nephews Donna Watson Ellis, Jason and Lauren Ellis, Marti, and Jeff
Rosenfield, Max and Jake Rosenfield, D.J. Ray, Bill and Deanna Ray
Davis, Ricky and Julie Martin, Sherry Page and Christie, Garrett,
Travis, Ryan, David and Jonathan Evans. Bubba’s life was truly
blessed with a multitude of friends and family, including the
Dickeys in Huntsville and Satterwhites scattered all over the place.
“A person never dies as long as there is a single soul who keeps
alive the memory.” To our Bubba: We shall all hold tightly to our
memories, whether they be of you giving a rib-crushing hug, riding
on a golf cart with dear friends, catching a trolley car on Powell
Street, selling a ranch, decorating a home, sharing a weekend at
Jazz Fest, skiing in Colorado, deer hunting at the lease, making the
most awesome mashed potatoes, choosing # 4 to win a red Corvette,
celebrating birthdays at Jack Binion’s steakhouse, supporting a
less-fortunate family during the holidays, or assembling toys on
Christmas Eve, And, yes, Virginia. There is a Santa Claus. His name
was Bubba Dickey. So to our beloved Bubba, we don’t say “goodbye,”
but thanks for the memories. You will never be forgotten. We love
you. Services were held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the
First Baptist Church in Crockett with Father Jack Chase officiating.
