NEW SALEM CEMETERY

This cemetery is located northwest of Latexo, off CR2120.  On US287 in Latexo, at the blinking light, turn west onto Old Latexo Rd. beside the Methodist Church, and travel 1/2-mile to a Y; take the left fork to cross the railroad tracks, where the road becomes CR2124; after 2/10 mile, at a T, turn right onto CR2120.  Travel 2.8 miles, crossing Little Elkhart Creek just before arriving at the location of the cemetery. Turn right through a steel pasture gate; the cemetery lies within view about 200 yds. ahead. The gate is locked.  The 3.4 acre cemetery is fenced and well-maintained on an attractive site partially shaded by large trees.

The land for the cemetery, which is in the F. McNeil Survey, was sold to Trustees for the New Salem Community by Dr. John B. Smith on February 9, 1901, for $17.00 [HCDR 27, p.101]. The Trustees were Freeman Burton, J. H. Long, and Joe Lomax, and their successors.

There are many unmarked graves, but the date on the oldest remaining tombstone indicates that the cemetery was in use in l888. The New Salem Community, had a school at one time, and has the New Salem Baptist Church. The church was originally a log cabin on a different site and has a history of at least 110 years. The current church property was given to the community to be used for a church or it would revert to the estate of John Ward. It is located on CR2159 , one mile from CR2120; the school was on a hill on the same road, closer to CR2120.
