OLD MERIWETHER CEMETERY

Located W. of Grapeland off FM 227 in Mt. Zion Community. Turn left on a dirt road marked by Houston Co. Lake sign; then take the first road that turns left from this road. It is only a short distance from the last turn-off to the Cemetery.

Mrs. Milo Pennington (Elkhart, Texas) states that her great-grandfather, Dr. Francis Lewis Meriwether once owned this land. Some of the slaves died and were buried there. After the Civil War, the land was given to the Negroes for a Cemetery.
