TWO LOST CEMETERIES/EAST HOUSTON COUNTY
Two cemeteries of East Houston County which have not been located, according
to Nina Patton Craig, Historical Commission member, are in Hickory Creek
area.
One is across the Hickory Creek, going toward the Wilse Brown property and
toward Center Hill. Some old timers state that at one time it was rather a
large Cemetery. At the present time (1985) different people remember that
there were two bronze tombstones standing with the name 'Patton' on them.
The bronze markers are no longer there.
Someone else remembers a lost cemetery that lies across Hickory Creek going
toward the Creath and/or Bear Branch Communities. One report is that it is
on the Creath-Tadmor road. Another report places it near the Creath-Bear
Branch road near the old school. Woodrow Roberson, son-in-law of Tom Patton,
remembers seeing it when on a surveying crew. Tom Patton says the name of
the Cemetery was the ELAM CEMETERY. Jacob
Patton, father of Tom, Ace, Billy, Sam and Betty Patton Merriwether, is
buried there.
These two old cemeteries, along with all the other LOST ONES, are but an
'echo of remembrance' to the ones who have loved ones buried in them. Time
may have forgotten them, but we who hold them dear, will remember them
always, said Mrs.
Craig in her memorial tribute.
