ADAMS-LITTLE MEMORIAL CEMETERY

This well-kept family cemetery, no longer open to the public, is located off Weldon FM-230 about 8 miles south of Lovelady, turning right onto FM 2915 at 76 Union sign and traveling 2 miles to a onetime sign' Adams-Little Cemetery' which fronted a dirt road. This quarter-mile dirt road into the family cemetery was opened in 1958 and fences built from FM-2915 to the wel1-attended burial grounds. Adams, Little, Peacock and Maples families bore the expense of materials and labor to put up the fence, plus paid legal fees to Crockett Attorney J. B. Sallas to insure the continuance of the ingress road. BUT with the purchase of the land surrounding the cemetery, the new owner fenced in the cemetery road, closing the access area to family members as well as the public. Family descendants have circulated, signed and presented petitions to the County Judge and Precinct 3 Commissioner protesting the act and requesting that the road be reopened. Presently that has not been done.
 

On Nov. 30, 1985, an official Texas Historical Grave Marker honoring Archie Adams who gave the land for the family burial ground was dedicated. The presentation of the marker was reviewed at the annual homecoming held on the first Saturday in June or June 7, 1986.

Mrs. Louise (H.S.) Fulsom repeated her good work of taking the census and updated the material for the sesquicentennial edition. She is the great niece of Archie Adams and has compiled articles from his diary and journal, covering years 1873-1897, which reveal much of the quality of life of South Houston County neighbors during the latter part of the 19th century.

     Text of official Texas Historical Marker to ARCHIE ADAMS (May 15, 1842 - October 8, 1914) A native of South Carolina and a

     Confederate veteran, Archie Adams came to Houston County, in 1873. Adams was a farmer and general store owner and

     also served as an election judge and county commissioner. He and his wife, Selia Anna, are buried in the family cemetery he

     began in 1884 with the burial of an infant son. The Journal he kept from 1873 until 1897 serves as an invaluable commentary

     on 19th Century life in Houston County. Recorded - 1985
