1. William Zedekiah (Zidd) MCCLAIN was born 19 Nov 1812 in GA, and died 14 Jul 1899 in Trinity, TX. He was buried Jul 1899 in Trinity Co., TX. He married Rhoda Deborah WATSON 11 Apr 1844 in Watson, Comanche Co., TX. She was born 7 May 1825 in LA, and died 30 Apr 1913 in Centralia, Trinity Co., TX; daughter of Artemas "Sam" Watson who came to Texas in the early 1820's. She was buried May 1913 in Trinity Co., TX.

 

William McClain had received land from the Republic of Texas in April of 1837 by declaration that he was a single man who had arrived in the country prior to Independence and therefore was entitled to 640 acres. 

 

William Z. McClain and Rhoda had their home in Hagerville, Houston Co., TX.  The house had three rooms and five windows and was made of logs.  The cracks between the logs were filled with moss and mud.  Two large chimneys were also made of moss and mud.  The windows were made of wood and made to slide from side to side. William made the furniture for their home.  Two bedsteads which he made exist still.  They were shaped with rope stretched from railing to railing, sinstead of springs.  The bedding rested on the ropes about three feet from the floor.  A spinning wheel, a warming pan, popcorn popper, dinner pots and a dinner horn were located near a fireplace.

 

The family attended church services as often as a preacher was available.  They rode to church in a wagon drawn by oxen.

 

William was a member of the first grand jury that met in Crockett.  Since no building was provided for court session, the jury met under a large tree near the present site of the Davy Crockett Spring and fountain.  During the session Indians attacked a family on the present Hall's Bluff Road, but escaped across the Trinity River.

 

William Z. McClain was a member of the Masonic Order.

 

The Civil War was growing with intensity and volunteers were needed.  On May 4, 1862 he and his eldest child, Rufus, enlisted for military service at Sumpter, in Trinity County.  He was 50 years old and Rufus was 17.  They were in Gen. John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade, 1st Texas Regiment.  They were separated, and did not meet again until after the end of  the War.

 

William McClain joined in May of 1862 and served with them until May of 1863 when he was first absent without leave.  He had been on furlough earlier in the year, and one wonders if he did not remain to plant the crop.  There were two more occurrences in 1863, the wounding of their eldest child, William Rufus, who had joined the infantry, fought and was discharged in Richmond.  This son later volunteered for the Calvary and served until the war was over.

 

The second event in 1863 was the birth of Rhoda's last child, in December.  So perhaps these family events kept William home.  At any rate he was not declared a deserter so must have been honorably discharged.

 

After the death of William Z. McClain, his wife is living with one of her married daughters, Mrs. Abram Hutson.  Rhoda died in Centralia, Trinity Co., TX.
