JACOB ALLBRIGHT - born 1807 -

Born in Orange County, TN
One
of the
organizers of Houston County.
Jacob Allbright was elected
first county
clerk in September 1837.
He was also one of
the first Notaries Public and
served as tax assessor and
collector. Jacob was one
of 10
children of John Allbright ,
Sr., who met a
tragic death by Indians shortly
after his arrival in Texas with
his family in the early 1830's.
Jacob's brothers were Edward,
William. Soloman and John, Jr.;
his sisters, all of whom
married, Sarah Strand, Margaret
Ware, Mary Long, Nancy Long and
Catherine Kirchoffer.
Jacob Allbright established a
ferry
business and warehouse on the
east bank of
the Trinity River and
also the town of Alabama.
Alabama became the commercial
center of the Trinity River
traffic and Allbright was the
leader. He and 10 others (G. W.
Grant, George Pruitt, Collin
Aldrich, Elisha Clapp, John
Wortham, Isaac Parker, Ralph
Nelson, Elijah Gossett, William
Clark, James Can) were trustees
of Trinity College which was
established in Alabama, Houston
County in 1841.
Allbright lived and died at
Alabama, Houston County, and
sleeps in the family cemetery on
the bluff overlooking his
beloved Trinity River.
