MIGRATED FROM TENNESSEE 15 NOV 1851 TO BASTROP CO. TEXAS WITH BROTHER JOHN
COFFEY CASKEY. William W. Caskey left Giles Co. and went to Madison Co.
Tenn. where he joined the Kentucky Wagon Train in 1851. He had two ox
wagons. He went to Grapeland,Texas and settled 5 miles north and later
preempted some land from the state. He raised a lot of hogs and sold them
to the government during the civil war. He also brought 3 real good
methods of curing meat. The first was to salt the hams and cover them with
hickory ashes, the second was to put the meat in a strong barrel of brine
for 2 months and then hang it with bear grass and smoke it for a few days,
or until it dried. The last wasy was to salt it down for 2 months. Wylie
hauled his meat to the rivers and sold to the river boats. He also made
hog head cheese and soap. He was pawed to death by a bad horse in March of
1879.
