Hopkins County Sheriffs, 1848-1945

Bartholemew W Millhollan - was elected the first sheriff on July 13, 1846 and served until August 7, 1848

Jesse C Russell - was elected on August 7, 1848 and served until August 5, 1850

Hiram Russell - was elected on August 5, 1850 and served until August 2, 1852

A B Hudson - was elected on August 2, 1852 and served until August 7, 1854

Samuel Smith - was elected on August 7, 1854; re-elected August 4, 1856 and served until August 2, 1858

William W Poff - was elected on August 2, 1858 and served until August 6, 1860

John Mason - was elected on August 6, 1860; re-elected August 4, 1862 and served until August 1, 1864

S W Smith - was elected a second time on August 1, 1864 and served until August 7, 1865

Green B Crowder - was appointed on August 7, 1865 by Governor A J Hamilton and served until Junee 25, 1866

Samuel W Smith - was elected a third time on June 25, 1966 and served until November 1, 1867 when he was removed by General J J Reynolds' Special Order #195

William Sickles - was appointed on November 1, 1867 by General J J Reynolds' Special Order #195 and served until February 25, 1870 when he resigned.

A D Glazier - was appointed on February 25, 1870 by General J J Renolds Special Special Order #44. There is no other mention of him nor how long he served.

J A Weaver - was elected on December 3, 1869 (there is an overlap of terms here); re-elected December 2, 1873 and served until February 15, 1876

Sam W Smith - was elected to a fourth time on February 15, 1876; re-elected November 5, 1878 and served until November 2, 1880. Sheriff Smith served a total of ten years, four months and seven days during the four times he was elected sheriff.

J R Ferguson - was elected on November 2, 1880; re-elected November 7, 1882 and served until November 4, 1884.

Sam G Smith - was elected on November 4, 1884 and served until November 2,1886

John R Ferguson - was elected on November 2, 1886 and served until November 6, 1888. (Is he the same as J R Ferguson above?)

William J Brannon - was elected on November 6, 1888 and served until November 4, 1890. (Name is spelled Branum in the State Election Register).

H Bascom Sherman - was lected on November 4, 1890; re-elected November 8, 1892, and again November 6, 1894 and served until November 3, 1896.

G D Withers - was elected on November 3, 1896; re-elected November 8, 1898 and served until November 6, 1900.

W B Loring - was elected on November 6, 1900; re-elected November 4, 1902 and served until November 8, 1904.

Jerry Lewis 0 was elected on November 8, 1904 and served until November 6, 1906

S G Smith - was elected a second time on November 6, 1906; re-elected November 3, 1908 and served until November 8, 1910

John R Ray - was elected on November 8, 1910; re-elected November 5, 1912 and served until November 3, 1914

J B Butler - was elected on November 3, 1914; re-elected November 7, 1916 and served until November 5, 1918

E N Bingham - was elected on November 7, 1922; re-elected November 2, 1920 and served until January 1, 1923

S E Smith - was elected on November 7, 1922; re-elected November 4, 1924 and served until January 1, 1927

Frank O Flippin - was elected on November 2, 1926; re-elected November 6, 1928 and served until January 1, 1931

William Clinton Reneau - was elected on November 4, 1930; re-elected November 1932, and again November 6, 1934 and served until January 1, 1937

Edward W Bannister - was elected on November 8, 1936; re-elected November 8, 1938 and served until January 1, 1941

W E Melton - was elected on Nove 5, 1940; re-elected November 3, 1942 and served until January 1, 1945
