PALMER, M. C. - Died at his home on Main street Saturday night following an operation. Born in Alabama 67 years ago. Moved to Texas and located in Hopkins County about twenty years ago. Buried in the City Cemetery. Sons: B. A. Palmer of Sulphur Springs, Ernest Palmer of Jefferson, and his brothers, T. A. Palmer of this city, and J. F. Palmer of Clinton, Alabama.

Palmer, Mrs. Jane "Aunt Jane" as she was often called, was born in the State of Indiana in March of 1961 (sic) and lived in Hopkins Conty for the past 57 years. She died April 21, 1939, at her home in Dike. She had been in ill health for six months. Surviving are one son and one daughter. Funeral services were conducted at Connor Cemetery where interment followed.

PALMER, SARAH, MRS. - Died at Ardmore, Okla., Saturday and her remains were brought here and buried in Cumby cemetery. Mrs. Palmer lived just north of Cumby for a great many years and reared her family here; Mrs. B. F. Ashcroft of Sulphur Springs being one of the children. For several years she had made her home at Ardmore with her children, living to the extreme age of 80 years. Her son, Otis Palmer, and her grand-daughter, Miss Gladys Williamson, came with the remains. Will Rash and wife, B. F. Ashcroft, and Bloomer Rash and wife of Sulphur Springs and others attended the funeral. A large number of people accompanied the coffin to Mrs. McKinney's residence and attended the services at the grave on Monday. The Eastern Star, of which she was a charter member, had charge of the funeral.

DR. D.C. PARDUE was born in Perry County, Mississippi, in 1835, educated in Green County Salem High School; then engaged in the mercantile business in Mobile, Alabama, until the beginning of the civil war. He then enlisted and became Captain of Co. C 7th Mississippi Battalion. Soon after the close of the war he came to Collins County, Texas, and taught school two years; then attended medical lectures and graduated at Tulane Medical College in New Orleans; returned to Texas and took up his profession, which he has since followed. He later engaged in the drug business at Nevada, Texas. In 1894, he was married to Miss Bell D. Binford of the same place, to which union was born two children. Wife and childrensurvive. He died December 25, 1911, with burial in the Cumby cemetery.

PARISH, ARVIE BUFORD - Little two-year-old daughter (sic) of Mr. & Mrs. A. W. Parish, of the Black Oak community was buried at the City cemetery, with services being conducted by Rev. J. B. Whiteside.

Odies Weldon Parker
Funeral services for Odies Weldon Parker, 67. of Cumby will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Feb. 9[, 2001], in Jones Memorial Chapel at Jones-Walker and Son Funeral Home in Commerce with the Rev. Mike House officiating.

Interment will follow in Long Cemetery near Cumby with Michael Parker, Randy Parker. Ivy Carlton, Benny Westbrook, Tim Hathcock and Ricky Lee Jones serving as pallbearers.

Visitation vi1i be held from 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Parker died Wednesday. Feb. 7,2001 in Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 2. 1933, in Hopkins County, the son of Marvin Weldon and Dolly Lee Millsap Parker.

He married Catherine Marks on June 6, 1955, in Sulphur Springs. She survives.

Mr. Parker was a brick layer. He was affiliated with the Church of Christ.

Other Survivors include one son, Odies Allen Parker of Ben Wheeler: one daughter. Linda Eubanks of Ben Wheeler: tour grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Parker of Grand Prairie and Kenneth Parker of Oklahoma; and two sisters. Mary Goforth of Grand Prairie and Louise Pierce of Corsicana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter. Linda Sue Parker Keels in 1972.

Omar O. Parker, husband of Mrs. Ollie Parker, died June 20, 1935. He was born Nov. 20, 1886, at Tira, Hopkins County, Texas. He moved to Dike with his parents when he was a year old. He was engaged in farming most of his life. His father, mother, and one son preceded him in death several years ago. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Olllie Parker, six daughters and one son, Meddad (sic) Parker, Mrs. Herman Burkham, Mrs. Floyd Owens, Irene, Luneva, Lawanda, and Audry Parker. Burial in Connor cemetery.

E. H. "Hawk" Parnell - Uncle Hawk, as he was known, was born in Dade Co., Mo., Dec. 3, 1858, and died May 29, 1929. He came to Texas when just a boy. Was married to Miss Martha Carson, Feb. 15, 1878. To this union ten children were born. Six have gone to the great beyond to welcome his coming. A wife and four children mourn his going - Ester Parnell, Ellis Parnell, Mrs. Carl Irby, and Mrs. John Sharp, a brother and sister, Jack Parnell and Mrs. Ellen Sharp. Mr. Parnell was of the Pine community.

Peter Parnell, who for the last three or four years has been a victim of paralysis, died at the home of his brother, Jack Parnell, Sat. afternoon, and his remains were interred in the Pine Hill cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. R. B. Day..

Mrs. Parsley (Feb 27, 1975)
Final rites for Mrs. Icie Cordelia Parsley, 86, who died Thursday morning at the Hopkins County Nursing Home, were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the W. Y. Goff Funeral Home in Commerce, with the Rev. E. O. Short of Dallas officiating. Interment followed in the Emblem cemetery in Hopkins County.

She was born Oct. 20, 1888, in Mississippi, but had lived in Texas since childhood. She was the daughter of Mike and Allie Bird Harbour, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

J. T. Morgan, her first husband, died Jan. 1, 1928, and her second husband, Charles W. Parsley, died in 1937.

Survivors include three sons, M. M. Morgan of Ridgeway, Elbert Morgan of Cumby and Leon Morgan of Sulphur Springs; a sister, Mrs. Geneva Phillips of Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three step-daughters and a step-son.

PATE, JOHN W. - An old citizen died at his home in the south part of town at 1:30 p.m. today. He was born in Bedford county, Tenn., May 14, 1833. He married Miss Sarah Wester in that state and moved to Sulphur Springs in 1859 and has lived here ever since. He joined the Christian church more than fifty years ago. He joined the Confederate army in 1862 and was an honored member of the camp at this place. He lost the wife of his youth by death and married Mrs. Fannie Ferrell about twenty years ago; she survives him. He has five children living, O. M. Pate, Abel Pate, Mrs. Mary Beck, Mrs. Love Ardis, and Mrs. Bob Kirkpatrickof Dallas. Burial was at the City cemetery.

PATE, RUTH - The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abel Pate died Tuesday night at 10 o'clock at the family home on Quitman street, after an illness of several weeks. She was afflicted with diphtheria some time ago, and did fully recover. Other complications set in and her tired little spirit could not endure the racking pains of disease no longer. The funeral services and burial were held at the city cemetery.

Ben F. Patrick, 56 years old, died at his home in the Greenwood community on Dec. 11, 1902. He was born March 10, 1846, the son of Austin and Nancy Reed Patrick in Alabama. He severed in the civil war replacing a wounded brother. He moved his family to Texas in a covered wagon in the early days. Survivors are his wife, Isabol (sic), a daughter, Dora Horne, four sons, Jesse Marcus, twin sons, James and Hardy Patrick. Burial was made in the Greenwood cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Willie Mae Patterson Brand, 65, of Brashear, are set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. David Burns officiating. Burial will be in the Greenview Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Loyd Chapin, Gene George, Jim Hefferich, Aubrey Hicks, Jack Smith and James Neal Strickland. Honorary pallbearers will be Milton Penny and Keith Burns.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Brand died at 1:05 a.m. Thursday in Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, following open heart surgery. She was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Emory, the daughter of Robert Steven and Cora Vergie Hines Coleman. She married Clifford P. Patterson Sept. 18, 1934, in Wood County. He preceded her in death in 1974. On Sept. 7, 1978, she married Woodrow Brand in Rockwall County, Texas. He survives. Mrs. Brand was a homemaker and a member of the County Lind Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, L.J. Patterson of Frisco, Richard Lee Patterson of Sulphur Springs, Ronald Dee Patterson of Mesquite, Robert James Patterson of Union Valley and Kenneth Dale Patterson of Mesquite; two daughters, Jimmie Lauverl Roden of New Orleans, La., and Oneta Joyce Stone of Euless; two stepdaughters, Louise Smith of Brashear and Mary Ann Strickland; two brothers, Bobby Coleman of Sulphur Springs and Clifford Coleman of Irving; a sister, Opal Penny of Dallas; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

C. M. Patton, pioneer citizen, leading banker, and financier of Cumby, died at his home in that town Tuesday night after a lingering illness. He was about 60 years old, having been born in the State of Mississippi. He came to Cumby when a young man and soon became one of the foremost men of the town. For many years he was actively connected with the banking interest of the town and other banks in this part of the state. He is survived by his wife, one son, Edwin Patton, and two daughters, Miss Grace Patton and Miss Ada Patton. Services will be held in Cumby with burial in the cemetery at that place.

Mrs. C. M. Patton, age 58, prominent Cumby woman and widow of the late C. M. Patton, of that city, died in Greenville Monday night. She had been ill since early in December, and was carried to Greenville for treatment about a week ago. Mrs. Patton, nee Miss Lena Brewer, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. J. A. Brewer, pioneer Cumby residents, was one of Cumby’s most prominent women. She had been a resident of Cumby all her life and a member of the First Christian Church of Cumby since girlhood. She is survived by three children, Miss Grace Patton of the East Texas State Teachers College Faculty, Commerce; Miss Ada Patton, Cumby; Edwin Patton, National Bank Examiner; and one brother, W. E. Brewer, Cumby; one sister, Mrs. S. D. Greaves, Cumby. Her husband preceded her in death on March 2, 1932

John F. Pendleton died at the home of his sister (sic), Mrs. A. W. Brashear, at Pine Forest after an illness of more than two years. He was 55 years old and had lived most of his life in Hopkins County, for many years being a leading citizen in the Cumby country until moving to Commerce where his wife died two years ago. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with Mr. & Mrs. Brashear, moving from Commerce with them a few weeks ago to Pine Forest. Besides his daughter (sic), Mrs. Brashear, he is survived by two brothers, Josh Penlteon of Dike and Dick Pendleton of Mineola. Funeral services and burial took place at Sunny Point, south of Cumby. The death angel visited the Dike community and took for its victim, Mrs. R. C. [Drake] Pendleton. Mr. Pendleton preceded her in death last October. Mr. & Mrs. Watts and son of Wellington, was beside her sister when death came.

Mrs. Stith Penn - Death has entered our community and claimed for its victim, Mrs. Stith Penn, who for the past few years had been a victim of paralysis. She spent quite a number of years in this community. Her remains were interred in the cemetery at this place, with Revs. Brooks and Davis conducting the service.

Lee Pettit of Flora, died at his home Friday night after a month of illness. He was 77 years old and had lived many years in that community. He is survived by his wife and an adopted son, John Pettit. Funeral services and burial took place at Connor cemetery. (1928)

Mrs. Sallie Pettit died Feb. 5, 1935, at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Pettit. She was born May 18, 1854, in Aberdeen, Mississippi. She was married to Lee Pettit in 1874, at Gray Rock, Texas. She leaves four children, Mrs. Fagan Davis, Tira; Mrs Brown Tubbs, Flora; Lewis Pettit, Memphis, Texas; and John Pettit, Flora, with whom she lived. The body was interred in the Connor cemetery.

Mrs. G. M. Petty, who lived five miles south of Cumby, died Monday following an illness of about a week. She was born in Giles County, Tennessee, March 12, 1841. When 18 years old she married Dave Petty and they came to Texas a short time after, locating near the home where she died. Her death occurred twenty-six years to a day after that of her husband. She is survived by several children. Twelve children were born to this union, but five are dead. Those living are : Mrs. John W. Martin, Cumby, Mrs. Bob Martin, Farmersville; W H. Petty, Blossum; T. A. and R. G. Petty, Brashear; D. O. and J. E. Petty, Commerce. Services conducted by Rev. Hardy, with burial in the Sunny Point cemetery. (JUN 191)

PHARR, LOLA, MISS - Died November 30, 1908, in the home of Rev. W. A. Stone, from pneumonia. She had been assisting in the Union school three weeks. She leaves a father, mother, four brothers, and one sister. She was laid to rest in the Sulphur Springs City cemetery.

Mrs. Florence Pickett and Infant, the wife of Joe Pickett, died at her home near Shirley, Sept. 20, 1916 (Sic.) She was 34 years of age. She leaves a husband, and one little girl and boy, two brothers, three sisters, and a dear mother. She and her infant babe were laid to rest in Liberty cemetery, conducted by Rev. Paul Ray.

Mrs. Emma Othella Pogue died April 20, 1913, at the home of her son, Mr. Jim Pogue, near Pine Forest. She had lived in our community for more than thirty years, and was a member of the Methodist Church South. Mrs. Pogue was born October 12, 1841, was married to T. M. (sic) Pogue in 1857. Her husband preceded her several years ago. She leaves three sons and two daughters. Burial in Gafford^Òs Chapel cemetery.

William Pogue, age 67, died Jly. 7, 1935, at his home near Gafford Chapel, after an illness of several months. If he had lived 12 days longer, he would have been 68 years old. Funeral services were held at Gafford Chapel with burial in Gafford Chapel cemetery. He was a native son of Hopkins County, having been born in Pine Forest community. Surviving are his wife, Lydia Pogue, and one brother, Ben Pogue, Gafford Chapel, two sisters, Mrs. Mollie McKinney, Hougton, and Mrs. Eva Sandridge, Commerce.)

The remains of Miss Birdie Pool, daughter of James Pool who formerly lived here, were brought here Wednesday from Ada, Okla., and interment was held in the Connor cemetery.

Later reported - Died Feb. 14, 1911, at Ada, Okla. She was operated on for appendicitis, living one week after the operation. She was 24 years of age. She joined the Baptist Church several years ago in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She had been connected with the Telephone Exchange Co. at Ada, Okla., for several years being chief operator until her health failed and she had to give up work. She leaves a father and six brothers. POOL, N. B. - Died at the home of his son, James Pool, in this city, Sunday at 2 p.m. after an extended illness of several weeks at the advanced age of 79. Mrs. Henry Woodard, of Oklahoma, a daughter of Mr. Pool's, was at his bedside for several days previous to his death. She accompanied the remains to Ada, Oklahoma, where the interment took place.

Masonic resolutions - Frederick Seyburt Posey was born in Charles Co, Md, Feb. 13, 1828, and died in Hopkins Co., Texas, Jly. 30, 1893, and was at the time of his death, 65 years, 5 mos. and 17 days old. He leaves a wife and several step-children. He moved to Alabama in 1837, was baptized in the Spring Creek Baptist Church, Shelby Co., Ala; was made a Mason in the year 1848 in Harpersville Lodge, Ala. He joined the Confederate service, joined Capt. Dan Martin, Co. I, Col. Henleys 18th Regt.; was discharged on account of bad health; came to Texas, volunteered in the a Cavalry Co. in Sulphur Springs.
(He was the son of William Elgin Posey, brother of James Henry Posey.)

James Henry Posey
Died, at his home in Dallas County, after a brief illness in the 87th year of his life, James Henry Posey. He was born Sept 22, 1824 and died May 5, 1918. He came to Hopkins County, Texas soon after the war and located near Sulphur Springs some 50 years ago, later moving to Dallas County. The writer became acquainted with him when he first moved to Texas over 40 years ago, and was his pastor, first at Sulphur Springs for 2 years, and then at Richland Baptist Church for a good many years. He was a deacon of the Baptist Church when he came to Texas having joined the church early in his life. He was a true upright Christian gentleman always loyal to his pastor and his house was ever open as the home of God's preacher. He raised a noble family of children. He lost his first wife (Sara Caroline Thweatt) a few years after he came to Texas. He then married another good Christian lady (Effa Matilda Stewart) who now mourns his loss. Old and full of years he now rests from his labors and may God bless and comfort the bereaved ones. This brief tribute to his memory is written at the request of his daughter, Mrs. Tom Beville (Sarah Drucilla Posey) of Como by his old pastor.

POWELL, MARY ELLIS, MRS. - Wife of Judge J. F. Powell, died Tuesday evening after a long illness. The funeral services were conducted by Revs. J. E. Gober and R. C. Hicks at the family home and interment held in the City Cemetery. Mrs. Powell is survived by a husband and four children, Mrs. George Kincaid and Mrs. J.F. Parkhill of Cooper, and Mrs. W .A. Aldridge and Beckton Powell of this city.

PRATHER, ANNIE MAE - Passed away quietly July 26, 1915. Little Annie was nearing her 12 birthday, the eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Prather who lives 2 1/2 miles north of Weaver.

Mrs. Susan Preston died Tuesday evening at very advanced age after a brief illness. She was the mother of John H., Dan and Mack Wilson, our well known citizens. Her remains were buried at Sunny Point near where she has lived so long. (1911)

George H. Prim, one of the countrys oldest and most estimable citizens died at the home of his son, Parrish Prim, near Ridgeway, Thursday, May 17, 1906. He was in his 78th year, and for some time has been a resident of the Indian Territory, and was here visiting his son at the time of his death.)

W W Prim - Pioneer citizen of Hopkins County, died at Long Hospital where he had been in a serious condition from heart trouble. He was 70 years old, and survived by the following sons: George Prim, Sulphur Springs; R.C. Prim, Mineral Wells; and C.C. Prim, Brownfield.

Grandma Proctor Dies Sunday
Grandma Proctor died at the home of her son on Main Street. She was born in Tennessee, and came with her parents to Texas when she was six years old. Her husband died many years ago. She is survived by two sons, Tom Proctor of this city, and Dick Proctor of Miller Grove. She was buried at the Proctor Cemetery near Miller Grove.

Harvey H. Purcell - On last Sunday morning the spirit of H.H. Purcell took its flight back to the God that gave it. It was a shock to all as he had only been confined to his bed two days. He was 73 years of age. He leaves a dear companion (Alice M.) and two children. (1910)
