ABLES, ELSIE E., MRS. - Wife of Asberry Ables, was born February 21, 1877, died March 7, 1908. She joined the Baptist church at Black Oak in August 1894. She left a husband and two little daughters. S.S. Gazette

Rev. Amos Acker has passed away. He was survived by his son, John E. Acker, and several grandchildren. Burial in the Greenpond cemetery.

ADAIR, MRS. W. E. - Cumby, Hopkins Co., Texas - May 11, 1922 Mrs. W. E. Adair died in a Greenville sanitarium and was buried here. She was born at this place, then known as Black Jack Grove, March 1, 1888, and before her marriage was Miss Lucy Center, a daughter of W. F. Center, who for nearly fifty years conducted a blacksmith shop and who is still living at the advanced age of 88 years. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H. B. Cash, assisted by the Rev. Lockett Adair of Lone Oak, after which her body was buried in Cumby Cemetery.

Mrs. E.E. (Udora) Addy, aged 79, passed away at her home near Como, June 10, 1939, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, four sons, Druchel and C.D. of Como, J. H. of Mineola, Cecil of Spur; three daughters, Mrs. Grace Carroll and Mrs. Jewel Pounds of Como, Mrs. Dell Russell of Mineola. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church of Como, conducted by Rev. W.W. Rozelle, pastor of the Baptist Church, and Rev. Lester McKinney of Quitman. Burial followed in the Como Cemetery.) Mrs. Jessie F. Alexander of Corpus Christi, and sister of Charlie and Oliver Mann, died suddenly Monday morning. The body was shipped to Cumby for burial. Her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by four sons, Paul, Lamesa; Roger, Dallas; Jessie, Little Rock, Ark.; and Weldon, Corpus Christi; one sister, Mrs. Mary Potts, and seven brothers. (Hopkins Co., Echo, Mar. 16, 1934) Later reported in a Cumby news column - Mrs. Alexander, the wife of the late Jessie F. Alexander, died at her home in Corpus Christi, Mar. 12 1934, Services were conducted by Rev. Jones in Cumby. It so happened that Rev Jones had also assisted at the funeral, at this place, of Mr. J. F. Alexander. Oct. 1914. Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of the late John Mann, and was born a couple miles north of Ridgeway, Jan. 2, 1870. She married Mr. Alexander in the latter 80's. In the summer of 1892, they moved to this place (then Black Jack Grove) and that Fall, in connection with Mr. Milt Branom of this place, entered the dry goods business here. During the time the family resided here, Mr. Alexander was in business with, at different times, in addition to Mr. Branom, G. W. Holland and the late S. D. Greaves. He moved from here in 1911, returning in poor health in the summer of 1914, and dying in October of that year.

John Alexander, father of Ben and John Alexander of Ridgeway, died of cancer Sunday morning and was buried in the Cumby cemetery. He was about 80 years of age, a veteran of the civil war, of four years service. Cumby Rustler, Fri., Ap. 10, 1908

Mrs. T. C. Alexander, age 81 yrs., died at her residence some three miles northwest of here in Hunt county, and was buried in Cumby cemetery. Mrs. Alexander was born March 2, 1850, and was the daughter of Henry Banta, a pioneer Missionary Baptist minster who located here about 1845. She was born in the same neighborhood in which she died. She was married to T. C. Alexander Jan. 18, 1866. Her husband died in Jan. 1931, at the of 90 and resided here since 1852. She was the mother of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, all whom are living, except one son who died in infancy.

James Edd Allen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Van B. Allen, age 15 months, died Wednesday. He had been ill for several days with typhoid fever. Burial took place at Old Tarrant.) (Daily News-Telegram, July 24, 1924

Thomas J. Allen, age 93, pioneer citizen and war veteran died at his daughter’s home in Wood Springs Monday. The deceased is survived by a number of relatives. Funeral rites were conducted at Martin Springs with the Rev. Morris Hill in charge.

Grover C. Allred died Nov. 6, 1935, and was born Aug. 9, 1884, in Mississippi. He was brought to Texas by his parents when just a small boy. Nov. 8, 1909, he married Miss Lee Isom of Frisco, Texas. Soon after his marriage he moved to Hopkins County and lived in and around Como until his death. He is survived by his wife and four children: Mrs. Cleo Anderson, Dallas; Doyle, G. C. Jr, and Dorothy Sue, all of Pickton; two sisters, Mrs. Dick Moore, Childress, Texas; Mrs. Ford Westbook, Brookhaven, Mississippi. He was in St. Pauls Hospital at Dallas at the time of his death. His body was brought back to Como for burial.

Ed Altom, age 52, pioneer citizen, passed away Tuesday morning from about nine days illness from pneumonia at his home two miles east of Sulphur Springs. He was a native of Hopkins County. He married Miss Net Thomas early in life, who died a few years later, leaving four small children. Later he married Miss Maye Currin, and to this union were born eight children, one of them dying in infancy. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Leo, Billie, Henry and Earl; seven daughters, Maudie Lee, Edna, Ruby, Betty Maye, Virginia, Eddie Faye, and Mary Etta. He is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Charlie Roberts, California; Mrs. Leon Neighbors, Dallas; Mrs. Dave Reeves and Mrs. Sallie Sharp, Dike; and Mrs. Allie Argenbright, Colorado; one brother, Dud Altom, and his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Altom. Funeral services and burial will be at Old Tarrant.) ( Daily News-Telegram, Fri., May 8, 1934

W. R. Alton, a highly respected citizen of Hatchetville, died Monday at the age of 65. Burial took place at Old Tarrant.) (Hopkins County Echo, Fri., Dec. 24, 1920

Archie Anderson, son of Mr & Mrs. Jim Anderson, died at the family home at Star Ridge Thursday night. He was injured in an oil field about three months ago and never recovered from the injuries. J. Harvey Anderson, one of Cumbys respected citizens, died at the family homeMonday afternoon following a stroke of paralysis on May 30th. He died on his 70th birthday. The deceased came to Texas from Missouri about 54 years ago, locating at Miller Grove, moved to Cumby 12 years ago. He served in the Civil War. He was married twice, and two children survive him by the first union, namely, Mrs. Rosa Preston, of Pride, Texas, and Mrs. Mary Battenfield of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his second wife, mother of C. A. Bridges; a sister, Mrs. Paul Reiley of Kirkland; two brothers , Pleas Anderson of Dike, and Bob Anderson, whose present address is unknown. Burial at Miller Grove, conducted Revs. S. M. McPhail and Jarall Moore.

F. M. Apperson of Commerce, died Wednesday after a long illness. His body was brought to Cumby and buried. For years he was a citizen of Cumby. (Cumby Rustler, Fri., July 23, 1909

Mrs. Sarah A. Apperson, age 85, died Thursday of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henderson, in Commerce. She formly lived in Cumby having moved to the community 15 years ago. J. E. Ardis, age 73, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 24, 1934, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dowe Harris, at Overland, following a stroke Saturday night. His wife passed away exactly six months ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nonnie Russell, Commerce, and Mrs. Vergoe Harris, Overland; one son, Julius Ardis, of Gafford Chapel, and one brother, Julius, of California. One daughter, Miss Omar (sic) Ardis, passed away seven years ago. Funeral services and burial were held at Gaffords Chapel, conducted by Dr. J. Sam Barcus. He was a native of Kentucky and came to Texas with his fathers family early in life and settled in Gaffords Chapel community where he has lived over half a century. (Hopkins Co. Echo, Sept. 28, 1934

Mrs. Bell Armstrong, age 76, died Wed. night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. E. Canady, near Weaver. Funeral services were held at Mt. Sterling. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. L. H. "Bud" Thomas; one brother, J. M. DeBord; and four daughters, Mrs. Gus Mattingly, Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Joe Petty, Mrs. Bill Davidson, and Mrs. Millard Canady, all of this county.

ARMSTRONG, J. E. - A prominent business man and Dallas packer died very suddenly on Sunday evening of heart failure. He had gone to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hugh Prather, for a few hours visit when death overtook him. (S.S. Gazette, Fri., May 1, 1908

SULPHUR SPRINGS - A.Z. Aven, 87, of Yantis died Friday, April 7, 2006, at his residence. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at League Street Church of Christ with Revs. Jay Lockhart and Sam Seveir officiating. Military graveside services will follow at Arbala Cemetery under the direction of Hopkins County Military Coalition.

Mr. Aven was born April 26, 1918, in Weiland to Francis Leser and Sue Emily Slater Aven.

Mr. Aven was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the League Street Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Charles B. Ayers - The remains of C. B. Ayers, who died Tuesday morning in Legion Hospital at San Antonio, where brought to Sulphur Springs Wednesday morning on the Eastbound Cotton Belt and carried to the Myra Wilson Chapel where services were held. Rev. G. A. Lehnhoff of the First Methodist Church conducted the services, assisted by the Masonic Lodge of which the deceased was a member. He was born March 27, 1877, at Columbus, Ohio, where he was reared and educated. He was in the military service about five years during the Spanish-American war. Soon after his marriage to Miss Emma Mary Cox of this city, he resigned from military duty and accepted a responsible position with the Fort Worth National Bank in Fort Worth, Texas. This position he held almost a quarter century . He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Misses Medora and Lenora Ayers. He leaves one sister, Miss Nina Ayers, Havana, Cuba; and a brother, Emly Ayers, Columbus, Ohio. Obit dated Jan. 1930
