Houghton Family

[ Back to Family Histories ]

Submitted by Leah Grantham

The Houghton's arrived in Texas from New York State, via Indiana somewhere between 1837-1855, with William Lake Houghton. William was b. 1809, New York and d. 1877 in California. William married Lettice Carolyn Hargrave in Indiana in 1836-.

Lettice's father James E. Hargrave was born in North Carolina but died in Sulphur Bluff, Hopkins Co. 9 Oct. 1865. The earliest evidence I have found for James E. Hargrave being in Hopkins CO. is 1846.

Lettice's Mother Susannah Wood Gardner died in 1826, so she never resided in Texas.

William Houghton and Lettice Hargrave's son Daniel Houghton was born in Indiana in 1837-. Daniel married Nancy Elizabeth Hastings in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co on 26 Jul 1855. Daniel Houghton died in Navaro Co. TX on 24 Dec 1867, possibly from a yellow fever outbreak. He was only 30 years old.

Daniel's widow, Nancy Elizabeth Hastings' parents were: James William Hastings and Nancy Priscilla Smith. I do not have conclusive evidence that James Hastings was ever in Hopkins Co. He may have died in Grayson Co. Texas but I cannot say that for a fact at the moment. It appears that Nancy Priscilla Smith died in Hopkins Co. in 1885.

The Houghton's left Texas the year that their son Daniel died. They brought his body with them when they moved to California. Daniel Houghton is buried with the rest of his immediate family at a cemetery in Santa Fe Springs, California called Little Lake Cemetery. His widow, Nancy, remarried after he died but she is buried with Daniel, and not the second husband. I find it also curious that she is buried as Nancy Houghton and not with her second husband's last name. Nancy died in 1871- she was only 33. I do not know how she died.

I believe that after 1867 those 3 families no longer had ties with Hopkins Co. I have not researched in-depth anyone but my direct ancestors with those lines so perhaps siblings may have stayed on.
