Wilson A Green
Submitted by: Martha Green Stevens

Wilson A. Green was born November 19, 1809 in the Barnwell District of South Carolina and moved to Black Jack Grove (now Cumby, Hopkins County) in the early 1850's. He was for many years one of the prominent pioneer merchants of Old Black Jack Grove.(1) He served as postmaster of Blackjack Grove from August 3, 1866 until March 29, 1872. (2)

The first cotton gin in Blackjack Grove was erected by Wilson Allen Green in 1870. This gin was a horse gin, as they were called , since horses furnished the power to turn the machinery. the gin had a capacity of 4-5 bales per day. Later, Bill Cole and his father bought the property and replaced the horses with steam, installing a small boiler which held about 250 gallons of water.
