James Wilson Green
Sumbitted by: Martha Green Stevens
James Wilson Green was born January 1839 in Augusta, GA. He married Eliza Ellen Finley November 4, 1958 in Hunt County, TX. They had three sons and one daughter: Wilson Allen Green, David Lee Green, James Nathaniel Green, and Ida Maybelle Green.
Gaston Milford Green told a story about James Wilson Green chasing horse rustlers. Dad said that the story goes that one of the horse thieves turn and shot at James Wilson and the bullet grazed across his eyes. James was blind after that but continued his occupation as a horse trader.
James went blind when he was approximately 32 years old. When he went blind he took his oldest son, Wilson Allen, out of school to help him in his transactions. They used to buy all the turkeys in the community and drive them to market in Jefferson.
After Ellen died, James married Priscilla (aka. Jenny) East Bauman. They had four children together: Sarah Elizabeth Green, Pearl Green (died at 9 months), Dock Green (died at age 4 or 5 months), and Seth Edward Green. After James Wilson died in October of 1879, Priscilla (Jennie) married William L. Green. (no relationship to our Greens) William and Jennie had two children, Leslie Green and Grover Cleveland Green. So that makes three sets of Greens. The first two sets are step-siblings but the third set is of no relation to the first set.
David Lee Green, the second son of James Wilson Green and Ellen Finley was born September 17, 1865. According to the death certificate of David Lee Green he was a merchant by trade and worked at the Cumby Grocery Store until 1927. He died at the age of 74 years, 2 months, and 7 days. David Lee bought a large family plot at the Cumby Cemetery and was buried there. David Lee married Ann Eliza Herman July 5, 1896 in Black Jack Grove, Cumby, Hopkins County, TX.
