PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD
To The Review. Chandler, Texas, Mar 30--- In November
1879 when my father moved to the little village of
New York, Henderson county, there was two families who
lived three miles southeast of there at the foot of a
mountain. Both owned good farms and were prominent
and prosperous. Uncle Johnnie GAUNTT, whose
wife’s maiden name was OWENS, and Uncle Jimmy
GAUNTT, whose wife’s maiden name was CHAMPION.
These two men were brothers. Later on Uncle Jimmy
lost his wife, but he lived to a good old age. Years later,
Uncle Jimmy died.

On last Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe
YOUNG, the last of these good old pioneer citizens,
Mrs. J. C. GAUNTT passed away and was buried at
New York Monday.

These were large and very prominent families and the
children of both families seemed like brothers and
sisters to me; always my friends, any and all times
and the old people were so social and kind. Bill and Bass
and Bob and General GAUNTT, all of Athens and Dee
GAUNTT and Mrs. Roxie PHILIPS MACKEY of LaRue
are all that are left of Jno. W.

GAUNTT’s family and those who survive Mrs. Jas. C.
GAUNTT and Mrs. Texia (Bob)BAKER and Charley
GAUNTT of Athens and LeRoy GAUNTT, Mrs. J. H.
DINGLER, Mrs. Adaline McCURLEY, Mrs. Joe YOUNG of
LaRue and Mrs. Sibbie VANDAVEER of
Smith county.
One by one they swiftly pass away. One by one we’ll
swell the number. When all are in, and the trumpet of
God shall sound, there will be such a reunion as has
never been upon the earth. Now we see thru a glass
darkly, then face to face. We will be known as we are known.

Aged Minister Dies Suddenly

Rev. A. H. CALLOWAY of LaRue, age 67, one of the best
known Methodist ministers in Henderson County, dropped
dead in the pulpit at Post Oak, 7 miles south of Malakoff
about nine o’clock Tuesday night. The body was taken in
charge by the CARROLL & LEHR undertakers here and
will be shipped tonight to the home of his daughter, Mrs.
CONAWAY, in Palestine to await the arrival of children and
other relatives. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery in
Anderson County.

Rev. CALLOWAY has served on the circuits in Henderson
County for a number of years and at the time of his death
was pastor at Sampson, Walnut Creek, Oakland, Beck’s
Chapel and Meredith Camp Ground. He was assisting
Rev. C. H. HALL in a meeting now in progress at Post Oak
and it is said by those present that he was preaching one
of his best gospel sermons when the end came. He had
just finished repeating his text, “As it is appointed unto
man once to die; after this the judgment,: when he fell
into the arms of Rev. HALL, dead.

Rev. CALLOWAY is survived by his wife and a number
of children, one son, Homer CALLOWAY, who is in the
furniture business at Crockett, arrived in the city this
morning. Mrs. CALLOWAY has been elected to teach

Pioneer Lady Passes Away Suddenly Tuesday Night
----
Aunt Jane JAMIESON, better know probably as "Aunt Jane"
MORTON, who celebrated her 83rd birthday on January 30th
passed away suddenly Tuesday night at 10:15 at the home
of Mr. And Mrs. John W. MILLER on West Larkin Street.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon with burial at
Red Hill, Rev. HARRIS, the Methodist pastor conduction
the ceremony. Aunt Jane is survived by only one direct
relative. a brother J. H. MORTON, of Murchison. He arrived
here shortly after she died.

She had been enjoying her usual health and the Grim Reaper
stole silently upon her at 10:15 and she passed to the other
shore without complaint. The remains were borne silently to
old Red Hill where she was want to attend the early camp
meetings of the Methodist church when that was the banner
Methodist point of the county.

Aunt Jane was born in Alabama and made the trip to Texas
in ox wagon which formed part of an ox wagon train.
When she celebrated her birthday on last January 30th there
was only one request she had to make; that was that the
Methodist pastor call and pray in her home. This request
was complied with. She was an earnest worker for the
master before infirmities of age crept on and there is no
doubting the fact that today she is walking the golden streets.

For the past few years, or since May 1922 she has been making
her home with Mr. and Mrs. John W. MILLER of this city. Aunt
Jane was among the early pioneers of this county and her
going is another break in the ranks of that fast diminishing
type of which the world is made sadder by their departing.

Athens High School "Athenian" 1921

IN MEMORY
Vera HENRY
On April 3, the Death Angel visited the HENRY home, and
suddenly took from their midst, and from ours. Vera HENRY.
Vera was a beautiful and pleasant young girl; a member of the
freshman class; and one whom we all regret very much to
have been taken so suddenly away. But God knows best
who He desires to call us to our reward. May the broken
hearted father and mother, and other dear relatives be
cheered by the thought that she is waiting for them in
another world, where sorrow and troubles are
unknown--in a beautiful mansion--waiting to have
you clasp her in your arms--once more united.
We regret very much that we were unable to secure
a picture of Vera for the Athenian; but even though her
picture does not grace this book, her memory is
cherished as being a member of our union--The Athens High School.

I found this in an Athens High School 1921 annual:

IN MEMORIAM
Nadine ARD
The presence of the Death Angel was again felt in the halls
of Athens High on May 19, this time taking from the ARD
home, and from the Freshman class Nadine ARD. Nadine
was a sweet and most pleasant young girl, having many
friends in the various classes. Our deepest sympathy goes
out to the bereaved father and mother, and to other dear
ones, and when in your grief you think of the many friends
which she had --and example of one's life--may it serve you
as a pleasant reminder of your daughter and loved one.
May consolation come to you by the thoughts that some
day you will once more be united in the great beyond
where the death angel comes not and where you will
forever be together.

The date of Nadine's death prevented us having an
individual picture engraved for the Athenian; but as we
glance back through the familiar faces of our school,
there we see the beautiful face of Nadine, and we
repeat in our hearts, "gone, but not forgotten."
