C. C. Tyler, 90, Dies; Buried at Moorehead

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Moorehead cemetery near Eustace for Elder C. C. Tyler, 90, whose death occurred the day before. L. D. Rose of Athens conducted the services.
The deceased was born January 26th, 1849, at Jackson Mississippi, and died, near Powell, Texas.
He was a lifelong member of the Primitive Baptist church and had long been active in that faith. In 1884, he began preaching the gospel at the age of 23.
His wife, the former Miss Mary E. Thompson, died thirty-three years ago, ten children, five of whom survive, were born to this union. The surviving children are: San S. Tyler, Collinsville, Texas; Mrs. J. R. Rawlings, Kerens; Mrs. Viola Benson, Palestine; Mrs. J.?????, Athens and Mrs. ??? Frazier, Powell, Texas.
Twice married, the second wife of the deceased died on March 14th of this year.

Five Year Old Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Boyd Dies; Burial at Miles

Chester Vaughn Boyd, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. (Check) Boyd, died at the family home, 211 Frizzell street, at 1:15 Friday afternoon. The child succumbed to membraneous croup.
The body was prepared for burial by Carroll & Lehr and was carried to Miles, Texas, Saturday afternoon where burial took place there on Sunday.
Accompanying the parents to Miles were Mrs. Boyd’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Newman of Miles, who came here while the child was ill, and Mr. and Mrs. Forest Reynolds of Tyler. Mrs. Reynolds is a sister of Mrs. Boyd.
The child was born in Athens December 29, 1934. Besides the parents, the child is survived by two sisters, Billy Joe and Mary Nell.

Elbert Pickle Dies From Injuries In Car Crash

The first traffic death in Henderson County for 1940 occurred Wednesday evening at 7:35 when Elbert Pickle, 61, well known citizen of the Payne Springs community succumbed from injuries received in a car crash at the Y intersection on West Corsicana street Tuesday morning, January 2nd. Mr. Pickle died at the Doctors Hospital & Clinic where he was removed following the accident. He suffered a pelvic injury and serious bruises about the body when the truck in which he was riding fell on him after he was thrown from the car.
Henry Kelly of the Oakland community was driving the other car which figured in the crash. Riding in the truck with Mr. Pickle were his two sons, Herman and Cecil. Neither of the sons were injured.
Members of Mr. Pickle’s family were summoned to his bedside Wednesday when his condition took a turn for the worse and all came except one son, who resides in San Angelo.
The body was taken to Malakoff by the Ballard Undertaking Company of that city where it was prepared for burial.
Deceased is survived by his wife, three sons, Herman and Cecil of this county and four daughters, Mrs. Bill Smith and Mrs. Jim Reynolds of Payne Springs, Mrs. Rhodes and Mrs. McCallister of Terrell and one sister, Mrs. Florence Brooks of Corsicana. He had lived in the Payne Springs community the greater part of his life.

Funeral for Mrs. J. M. Pinkerton at Shelby Chapel

Funeral services for Mrs. J. M. Pinkerton, 74, who died at Plainview on Saturday, were held at Shelby Chapel at 2:00 o’clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. D. R. Cartlidge conducting the services. Burial arrangements were in charge of the Athens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pinkerton, the former Miss Fannie Estes, was born in Pickens County, Alabama, on June 18, 1865. She was married to J. M. Pinkerton on October 16th, 1893, and they came to Texas in 1916. they lived in this county for a number of years before moving to Plainview.
Surviving besides her husband are five children, I. T. Pinkerton of Fort Worth, Mrs. Icie Lundy of Alice, Texas, Jimmie Pinkerton of Athens, Homer Pinkerton of Plainview and Mrs. Bertha Johnson of Plainview. In addition there are eighteen surviving grandchildren.
Deceased united with the church at the age of 14.

Former Resident Of Brownsboro Dies At Kileen Last Week
Brownsboro, Texas, Aug. 26- Mrs. Maud Brown Brennan, 64 years of age, resident of Kileen, near Georgetown, for many years, died at the home of her son, Melvin Curry, in Georgetown, last week after a lingering illness of several months.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Methodist Church in Kileen, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. B. Lloyd, assisted by Baptist minister. Mrs. Brennan had been an active member of the Methodist church for the past forty-eight years.
Surviving her are the following eight children: Mrs. Veriee Holiman, Miss Oileen Brown, Brownsboro; Paul Curry, Waco; Kenneth Curry, Mrs. Bessie Harris, and James Brown of Kileen, Melvin Curry of Georgetown, and Jessie Brown of the Phillippine Islands. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. J.W. Collins, of Kileen, two sisters and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Brennan was formerly a resident of the Brownsboro community and has many friends as well as loved ones here.

Frankston Infant Dies; Burial At Bullard
Charles Ray Barton, 2 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Barton of Frankston, died at the home at 10:40 o’clock Wednesday night.
Funeral services were held at the Bullard Methodist Church on Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock with Rev. Esco officiating. Interment followed in the Bullard cemetery.
He also is survived by a brother, Jerry Dean.

Funeral services for Elbert Pickle, 61, who dies here Wednesday night from injuries received in a car crash on Tuesday night, were held at Payne Springs Thursday afternoon with Rev. Jim Lunsford conducting the services.
Mr. Pickle had been a long time resident of the Payne Springs community.

General Knight Dies Suddenly Thursday Night

General M. Knight, age 80, native citizen of this county and a long time resident here, died at the home of his nephew, Jasper Knight at 515 LaRue street on Thursday night about 11 o’clock. The aged citizen died shortly after suffering a sinking spell upon retiring. He had not been ill previously as he was up town as late as Thursday afternoon.
Shortly after retiring he suffered a chocking spell and called to his nephew to summon a physician. He was dead before the latter could reach the home.
Funeral services were held at Davis cemetery Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by Rev. D. R. Cartlidge, where interment followed. Carroll Lehr were in charge of the burial service.
Born near Baxter in this county, deceased was a son of the late K. K. Knight, who came to Texas from Alabama in the fifties. Mr. Knight was the last of twelve brothers and sisters to die.
He is survived only by a number of nephews and nieces. He had spent most of his life as a farmer but had been retired for several years.

Eustace Woman Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
Mrs. Rufus Graham, 40, of the Cottonwood Community, north of Eustace, died suddenly at 4:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon following a heart attack. She had been in apparent good health up to the time of her death. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Friday afternoon by Rev. J. W. Williford of Eustace. Burial rites were in charge of Ballard Undertaking Co. of Malakoff and Eustace.
Mrs. Graham, the former Miss Jewel Gregg, is survived by her husband, several brothers and sisters.
The couple had lived in the Cottonwood Community for a number of years where Mr. Graham is a prominent farmer.

Predicts Death At Polls, Dies After Voting

Knowing that death was near, Joe Williams, 55 year old Fincastle resident, cast his ballot late Saturday afternoon at the voting box in his home community and died shortly after reaching home. While marking his ballot, he remarked, “I’m going to live but a short time.” He was accompanied home from the voting place by Tom Kitchens and died of a heart attack shortly after reaching there.
“He talked freely about dying all the time he was at the polls,” Kitchens said.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Myrtle Springs cemetery with the Rev. Chambers of Chandler in charge.
Deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Mr. Williams had returned to Fincastle three years ago to make his home after an absence of fifteen years spent in Southeast Texas. Mrs. Williams is the former Miss Bess Weesner, member of a well known family of Eastern Henderson county.

John T. Hughes Dies Wednesday at Hebronville

News of the death at Hebronville, Texas, of John H. Hughes, 69, former Chandler business man was received by friends here on Friday morning. Mr. Hughes, who twenty-five years ago was engaged in the lumber business at Chandler, died Wednesday at Hebronville following an illness of three years.
Funeral services were held there Thursday morning.
Deceased was a member of a well known Eastern Henderson County family.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Joe Moss of Waco; Mrs. Byron Miller of Beeville, and Mrs. Saunders; three brothers, E. c. and R. N. Hughes of Tyler and A. N. Hughes of Chandler; and two sisters, Mrs. Allison Herrington of Tyler and Mrs. Jule Gilliland of Chandler.

Funeral Services For Miss Greer Held at Chandler

Funeral services for Miss Kate Ophelia Greer, 66, who resided on Chandler, Route 1, were held Sunday at 2:00 o’clock with burial following at Rock Hill Cemetery, Rev. Nathan Lane of Troup conducted the services.
Miss Greer died at 6:00 o’clock Saturday morning following an illness of a year’s duration. Survivors are one brother J. F. Greer, and a sister Mrs. Emily Morman, both of Chandler.

L. A. Campbell County Pioneer Dies Saturday

L. A. Campbell, 90, a resident of Henderson County for more then seventy years, died Saturday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. V. Cumble of Athens.
Funeral services for the pioneer resident, who came to this section of Texas the year after the Civil War ended, were held at the Cumbie home with Rev. D. R. Cartlidge, pastor of the West Athens Baptist church, in charge. Interment was in the city cemetery.
Deceased was born September 29th, 1849, in Pike County, Alabama, where he lived through the Civil War period, coming to East Texas in 1867, the year that Reconstruction began in he Old South. With the exception of a short period during which he lived in Williamson County, Mr. Campbell had lived continuously in Henderson County. He had been a lifelong member of the Baptist Church.
Six children survive. They are; Mrs. W. V. Cumbie, Mrs. Lula Hall, Jim Campbell and Roy Campbell, all of Athens; Mrs. H. D. King, Houston and Mrs. C. C. Ballard, Trinidad. Mrs. Campbell died in 1932.
Also surviving are seven grandsons, three granddaughters and three great grandsons.
Active pall bearers were: S. L. Morgan, A. L. Rogers, Stump Taylor, Percy White, Clarence Brewer and Bud Morrison.
Named as honoarary pall bearers were: J. t. Chancellor, S. L. Powell, Jim Welborne, Oscar Browning, Will Lee, J. R. Foster, Porter Morrison, B. c. Hall, John Dewberry, John B. Tindel, D. C. Mitchell, Clark Murrell, Jr., L. E. Cook, Joel Baker, Louis Hounsel, W. W. Howard and Lonnie Mann.

Fourteen Year Old child of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Anding Dies

Lela Anding, 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Anding of the Beck’s Chapel community, died ? ? ? Travis hospital in Jacksonville Sunday evening at the time she had been a patient for the pass three weeks. Death was due to a blood infection.
? ? were brought here ? night by Carroll & Lehr, ? and carried to the ? ? at Beck’s Chapel, funeral services were held at 3;30 ? ? by Rev. Clint ? of New York with burial at Beck’s Chapel, under the direction of Carroll-Lehr.

Mrs. I. A. Barton Dies Friday At Brownsboro
Athens Weekly Review 1/4/1940

Death Friday morning claimed Mrs. I. A. Barton, 69, lifelong resident of Brownsboro and a member of one of that community’s best known families. Mrs. Barton died at the family home there at 9 o’clock after a critical illness of three days. She had been stricken with a heart attack on Tuesday night.
Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at the Baptist Church in Brownsboro at 11 o’clock with Rev. Smallwood, Baptist minister in charge.
Interment followed in the Jennings Moutain cemetery a mile south of Brownsboro.
Deceased is survived by her husband, I. A. Barton, Brownsboro’s first mayor and one of that community’s best loved citizens; two daughters, Mrs. Ione McNeil, Ben Wheeler; and Mrs. Lottie Reagan, Trees, Louisiana; four sons, Harvey Barton, Beaumont; and Rube, Horace and John Barton, all of Brownsboro. All were at the bedside when Mrs. Barton died.

Funeral For Mrs. Monk Held This Afternoon

Funeral services for Mrs. J. C. Monk of Leagueville, who died early Thursday morning at Jacksonville, were held this afternoon at 2:30 at Red Hill cemetery by Rev. C. L. Herndon of Tyler. Mrs. Monk died following an illness of two weeks duration. She was a member of the Christian church.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Bobby Gene, five brothers Lige Pool of Murchison, George Pool of Chandler, and John, Jack and Claude Pool, all of Murchison, and three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Loosker of Axtell, Mrs. Ethel Everhart of Chandler and Mrs. Hallie Fowler of Brownsboro.
She was reared in the county and had lived in the Leagueville sector practically all her life. Mrs. Monk was the daughter of the late Sherman Pool, who died only a few months ago.

Sister of J. R. Scarborough Buried Friday

Funeral services were held at Hopewell Cemetery in Anderson county Thursday afternoon for Mrs. O. L. Wylie, 78, sister of J. R. Scarborough of Athens. Mrs. Wylie died suddenly Wednesday night following a stroke suffered Wednesday morning.
Mr. Scarborough and family of Athens attended the funeral.
Mrs. Wylie was ill a year ago but had recovered when she suffered the stroke.
She is survived by two sons, Arthur Wylie of New Mexico and G. L. Wylie of Palestine, and one daughter, Mrs. J. r. Williams of California. In addition to Mr. Scarborough, she is survived by one other brother, Dr. E. H. Scarborough, and one sister, Mrs. T. U. Dean of Houston.

Pioneer County Minister Dies at Tyler Home

Funeral services were scheduled to be held at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon for T. H. Irwin, 62, who for over forty years was well known as a minister in Eastern Henderson county. At the time of his death in Tyler at 11:05 Friday morning he was pastor of the Baptist churches at Murchison and Brownsboro in the county in addition to two pastorates in Smith county. He established the Murchison church many years ago and had served continuously as its pastor. He also formerly had served as pastor of the Baptist church in the Leagueville community in this county.
Interment will be in the Midway cemetery.
Surviving are his widow; one son, Troy Irwin of Tyler; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Tomberlain of Tyler; one brother, Jr. R. Irwin of Tyler; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Armstrong of Henderson and Mrs. Lula Armstrong of Henderson.

Veteran of Confederacy Dies at Age Ninety-five
R.S. Summarell, 95, one of the few remaining veterans of the Confederacy, died at the family home in Martins Mills at 5:00 p.m. Friday. The aged citizen had been ill for two years. Infirmities of age resulted in his death.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock at the Holly Springs Baptist church by Rev. D. R. Cartlidge, with burial following at the Holly Springs cemetery in charge of the Carroll-Lehr Funeral directors of Athens.
Mr. Summarell had resided at Martins Mills for forty-three years and had lived in the same house for forty-one years.
He was born in Alabama August 8th, 1844 and joined the Confederate army in that state.
Mr. Summarell was trice married. He is survived by his second wife, two daughters, Mrs. Laura Liner and Mrs. Zora Prestidge, both of Martins Mills. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Halbert Burnett, manager of the Athens Compress & Warehouse, is a grandson of the deceased.

Death Claims Tom Birdwell, Hurt In Accident
Dallas, Texas Nov. 24
L. T. Birdwell, 27, of Brownsboro, died here early Thursday of injuries suffered when an automobile in which he was riding overturned near Brownsboro last Saturday. Survivors include Mrs. Vivian Tillery, a sister, of Abilene.
W. R. Pounders, and L. T. Godfrey, of Tyler were badly injured in the same accident as they were returning from a hunting trip.
Mr. Birdwell’s body was brought to Tyler early Thursday morning by Burks-Walker undertaking company and will be held there until time for funeral services which will be 3 this afternoon at the Church of Christ in Brownsboro of which he was a member. The Rev. J. C. Foster of Mt. Pleasant will have services. Burial will be in the cemetery at Edom.
Mr. Birdwell, the son of R. P. Birdwell had lived in Brownsboro all his life where he was a merchant and engaged in the sawmill business.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Elwando, 11 years, and one son, Reginald, 3 years; his mother Mrs. D. B. Birdwell of Brownsboro; two brothers H. C. and Cone Birdwell of Brownsboro and Mrs. Vivian Tillery of Abilene, Texas.

Well Known Negro Dies On Thursday; Burial on Friday

Julius (Crip) Wilson, 49, well-known negro resident of Athens, died at 11 o’clock at his home here following an illness of several days. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday with the Baker and Jefferson Funeral Home in charge. The services were at the Church of God (colored) in North Athens.
Wilson, a World War veteran who served two years overseas, is survived by his wife and an adopted child, in addition to other relatives.

Missing Man Found To Have Died In San Antonio Hospital

A long search for E. Bradford Tuggle, 37, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Tuggle of Kemp, ended
Thursday in San Antonio when his brother J. M. Tuggle of Austin, was informed that the missing
man had died of pneumonia in a hospital in San Antonio on last June 18th. He was buried there.
The senior Tuggles are prominent residents of Kemp and are both well known in Athens,
Mr. Tuggle having traveled through here for many years while he was on the road for a grocery
firm. Mr. Tuggle is president of the Tri-County Road Association which has been active in
promoting a new road to extend from Kemp to Cayuga by way of Trinidad.
The parents have been in San Antonio the past two days making arrangements to have the
body brought back to Kemp where memorial services will be held prior to interment there.

Mrs. Boyd Dies At Home In Athens After Long Illness
Mrs. Loucritta Boyd, resident of Henderson County for the past 58 years, died at her home in Athens Tuesday after an illness of one year.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Roane Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Weisinger of Elkahrt officiating. Interment will be at the Roane Cemetery.
Mrs. Boyd 70, was born in Navarro County. She is survived by her husband J. D. Boyd; two sons Millard of Athens and Bernice of El Paso; three daughters Mrs. Bessie James of Fort Worth, Mrs. Effie Holman of Athens and Mrs. Ressie Keeton of Athens.
Also listed as survivors are four half-brothers. Bill, Luke, Ed, and Dock Simmons; two half-sisters Mrs. Martha Bell of Fort Worth and Mrs. Jennie Nace. Ed and Dock Simmons are residents of Sweetwater.
Mrs. Boyd is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Boyd, A. R. Boyd, Herman Stone, J. D. Stone, Thomas Simmons and Prey Simmons.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hassell & Foster Funeral Home.
Note: Mrs. Boyd was born Oct 14, 1879 and died Oct 11, 1949
The obit has Roane Baptist Church and Roane cemetery. The correct spelling is Rome.
Also has sister listed as Effie should be Essie.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Dosser Held in Corsicana

Funeral Services for Mrs. Lucy M. Dosser, 93, route 1 Kerens, who died in a Corsicana hospital Saturday, were held in that city Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
The services were conducted by the Rev. E. F. Bohmfalk, pastor of the First Methodist Church.  Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Dosser had resided in the Kerens community most of her life.  She was born on March 28, 1864.  
Surviving are four sons, Albert H. Dosser of Corsicana, Charles A. Dosser of Palestine, Louise E. Dosser of Athens, and Willie M. Dosser of Dallas; one daughter, Mrs. Luther Carroll of Kerens; three sister, Mrs. H. B. Hooker of Roane; Mrs. Herman Garlitz of Moran, and Mrs. A. L. Andrews of Corsicana; two brothers, W. H. Brown of Corsicana and S. H. Brown of Powell, and twenty-five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John Henry Brown, Bill Brown, Roy Brown, D. H. Andrews, M. W. Andrews and E. L. Andrews, all nephews.

Tobe Johnson Dies Thursday At Ben Wheeler

Tobe Johnson, former resident of Henderson county and a longtime resident of Van Zandt county died at 11:30 o'clock Thursday morning following a long illness.  His death occurred at his hone in Ben Wheeler.  Mr. Johnson was 78.
Funeral services were held at the Holly Springs cemetery.
Deceased was the father of the late Abra Johnson, Sr. of Athens.  Mrs. Mary Johnson of Athens, daughter-in-law of the venerable Van Zandt citizen, had been at his bedside for several days.
Those surviving include his wife; two sons, Louis Johnson, Phoenix, Arizona, and Horace Johnson, Grand Prairie, Texas; a sister Mrs. Julia Nixon, Ben Wheeler, and two brothers, George Johnson, Martin's Mill, and Sam Johnson, Canton.
