Mrs. Laura Ann Clay
----------
The Angel of Death paid
another visit within the realms of our city last Wednesday
morning to relieve the long period of suffering of another of
those dear and precious mothers. On this occasion the soul of
Mrs. Laura Ann Clay was borne away to her final reward of an
eternal home in the Celestial Kingdom. The loved ones who are
left behind, although their hearts are wrought in sorrow and
their souls enshrouded in mourning, would not wish to call her
back to this life of suffering, for they realize that she is now
at rest with life everlasting in peace and happiness, in that
land where there is no death-no pain-no suffering, but in their
stead, there is life, beauty and joy. It behooves them to so live
that when their life's journey is ended they will meet her again
in the life that is to come.
Mrs. Laura Ann Clay was born in Rice, Ellis Count, Texas on
January 18, 1870 and was at the age of 60 years, 11 months and 22
days at the time of her death on December 10, 1930. She removed
to Malakoff with her parents from the home of her birth place at
the age of 5 years and with the exception of these years, spent
her entire life in and near this community. She received her
education in the public school at old Malakoff (now known as
Oakland) and in early like, at the age of fourteen, she united
with the Methodist Church and since that time has lived a
consistent Christian life.
She was united in marriage to John Clay of this city on February
25, 1885 and to which union ten children were born, six boys and
four girls, all of which survived and were with the mother when
the end came.
Funeral services were conducted from the family home Wednesday
afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. E. L. Edgar. Following the
ceremony a large concourse of relatives and friends accompanied
the remains to the Malakoff Cemetery where they were tenderly
laid to rest by loving hands to await the resurrection morn
The deceased is survived by her husband, six sons, namely; M. C.
Clay, Route 2, A. L., J.D., J.B., and W. M. Clay, City; and J. L.
Clay of Athens; four daughters; Mrs. Jim Jernigan, Mrs. J.M.
Sudduth, and Misses Winnie and Mattie Clay, City; two sisters;
Mrs. Addie Mitcham Ft Worth; Mrs. J. K. Derden City; two
