C. A. Hewitt, 78, Dies Saturday In Oklahoma
News of the death of C. A. Hewitt, about 78, former bandmaster here, at
Okmulgee, Okla., early Saturday morning, was received by his daughter,
Mrs. Horace Seale of Athens.

Mr. and Mrs. Seale and Claude Browning left soon afterward for Okmulgee
where funeral services were held Sunday.

Mr. Hewitt was director of the Athens band here in 1929 and 1930, later
removing to Okahoma. He had been a resident of Okmulgee for the past
five years.

He is survivied by his wife and six children.

Hon. Lon Tanner Died At Malakoff
Was Prominent Citizen Of County Burial Was Held At Malakoff Saturday

Malakoff, Texas, February 9 -- Lon Tanner, prominent citizen of this county and one
of the leading business men of Malakoff died at the family home here this morning at
3 o'clock after an illness of three weeks from influenza. Funeral services were held
here Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial services will be in charge of the Masonic
Lodge of which deceased was a member.

Surviving Mr. Tanner are five children: Mrs. Ray Jarvis, Hubbard; Mrs. Floyd Smith,
Dawson; A. S. Tanner Jr., Houston and Maurice and Hazel Tanner of this city.
One brother, Dee Tanner of Mabank also survives him.

Few men of Henderson county were better known than Lon Tanner. he was a man
with a brilliant mind and until he was stricken with rheumatism a few years ago he took
an active interest in pollitical and civic affairs of the county. A number of years ago he
received the Democratic nomination for the legislature but was defeated in the Populistic
wave which swept the country at the time and captured practically all county and state
offices. Mr. Tanner was a brother to the late Jno. S. Tanner, who served as president of
Baylor University and who was declared by Governor Neff in a speech at Athens on last
July 4th to be one of the greatest men of Texas ever produced. In his tribute to
Jno. S. Tanner the governor said that he owed more to his success to J. S. Tanner
than to any other individual.

Lon Tanner was born near Athens Septermber 29th, 1857. He had been in business in
Malakoff for a great many years and was well and favorably known all over the county.

Mr. Tanner was a member of the Methodist church.
