Funeral Rites Tuesday For Mrs. Matthews
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Matthews, wife of J. J.
Matthews Athens Druggist, were Tuesday morning at 10:30
oclock from the family home on Tyler street. Rev. Roy
Mac(unreadable) pastor of the First Presbyterian church conducted
the service.
Mrs. Matthews died at 10:10 oclock Sunday night at the
family residence following a long illness. she only recently had
returned from a Dallas hospital where she had been under
treatment for several weeks.
The deceased was the former Margaret Fortson, member of a
prominent Navarro county family. She was born in that county on
August 2, 1874, but had been a resident of Athens for the past
twenty-eight years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two brothers, J. B..
Fortson Corsicana, and J. T. Fortson, Texas, and by four sisters,
T. D. Queen, Rice; Mrs. Ida Harper, Rice; Mrs. R. F.
Bart(unreadable) Rice, and Mrs. W. S. Hollis(unreadable) Dallas.
Interment was in the Athens cemetery.
Pallbearers were: H. L. Par(unreadable) Jr., Harry Murchison,
William Walker, Jr., Douglas Gauntt, (unreadable) Titsworth Jr.,
T. D. Evans.

Death Claims War Veteran At Govt Hospital
Following a long illness B. L. (Barney) Thompson, 51, World War
veteran and a native of Henderson county, died Thursday morning
at 6 oclock in the Veterans Hospital at Dallas. The
deceased had been a resident of Corsicana for the past seven
years but prior to that had spent most of his life as a citizen
on this county where he was born.
Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at 2:30
oclock at the Shelby Chapel cemetery near Athens with Rev.
D. R. Cartlidge, pastor of the West Athens Baptist Church, in
charge. Military rites were scheduled for the internment service.
Mr. Thompson, an overseas veteran who was gassed in France, was
born in the Ash community near Athens. He is survived by his
widow and six children; his father, E. J. Thompson, Baxter; four
brothers, Glenn Thompson, Athens; Randall (Bill) Thompson, Waco;
Roy Thompson Baxter; and Troy Thompson, Fort Sam Houston, San
Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Mooney, Houston; and Mrs. Jewel
Cravey, Athens.

Funeral Held For Charles F. Taylor At Frankston
Funeral services for Charles Franklin Taylor, 32, who died at the
home of his father in Frankston on Thursday afternoon following a
short illness, where held Friday afternoon at 2:00 oclock
at the First Baptist church in Frankston. Rev. C. C. Bowles
conducted the service, assisted by Rev. W. P. Bond.
Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Taylor, Frankston;
two sons, Charles and Dan of Frankston; three sisters, Mrs. Addie
Bell Dickerson, Poynor; Mrs. Avinell Reynolds, Frankston, and
Mrs. Ollie Bell Compton, San Antonio.
Burial was at Frankston cemetery.

Brother Of Mrs. George Collins Dies Suddenly
J. A. Carroll, 52, brother of Mrs. George Collins of Athens, died
suddenly in Oklahoma City at 4:00 oclock Tuesday following
a heart attack. He had previously suffered periodic attacks. He
died Tuesday within two hours after being removed to a hospital
in that city.
The body was brought overland to Tennessee Colony Wednesday and
funeral services were held at the Tennessee Colony church at 2:30
Thursday. Burial followed in the Tennessee Colony cemetery.
Mr. Carroll was born in Tennessee Colony but had resided in
Oklahoma City for the past twenty five years. he was engaged in
the construction business in that city.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. J. L.
Carroll of Tennessee Colony; three sisters, Mrs. R. K. Blackshear
of Austin, Mrs. E. W. Blackburn of Corsicana and Mrs. George
Collins of Athens; five brothers, L. W. Carroll of Austin, A. B.
Carroll of Santa Anna and T. A., G. B. and J. B. Carroll of
Tennessee Colony.
