E. E. Cornelius
Mr. Ernest E. Cornelius, the subject of this sketch, is a
native of Alabama, having been born in St. Clair county,
Jan. 1, 1893. He came with his parents to Texas in 1907,
locating first in Ellis county, then they came to Henderson
county, locating near Eustace, where young Cornelius
attended school and finished his high school course in 1912.
He then attended North Texas Normal at Denton, also
Westminister College at Tehuacana. For a time
Mr. Cornelius taught school and when Uncle Sam
called for soldiers in 1917 he was one who was
ready to go and enlisted in the army. This occurred
on September 19, 1917, and in a short time
Mr. Cornelius was overseas. He spent several
months in the army of occupation after the
Armistice was signed, and didn't return to the
United States until June 28, 1919. But he came
home in fine health and returned to the work he
had taken up before enlisting, that of teaching
school. That he followed for several years.
On October 26, 1919, Mr. Cornelius was married
to Miss Iris McWilliams, who also, had been
engaged in educational work. They have one son,
Ernest, Jr., of whom they are very proud.
Politically, Mr. Cornelius affiliates with the
Republican party and in 1922, he was made
the Republican nominee for county judge.
Needless to say, he failed of election to
that office, but he made a creditable race
and established himself as one of the leaders
of his party in this part of the State.
In recognition of his qualifications for the post,
Mr. Cornelius was on December 19, 1923,
appointed postmaster of Athens, and is
handling the office in a very satisfactory
manner to the patrons here. With his
efficiency and earnest desire to give good
service, he is delivering the goods.
Mr. Cornelius affiliates with the following orders:
Masonic, I. O. O. F., K. of P., Eastern Star and the
American Legion, of course. He is a young man who
has, during the short time that he has been before
the public, demonstrated his ability to accomplish
things. And while but a young man, he undoubtedly
has a bright future before him.
