JOSEPH SHELTON born about 1790/1796 in North Carolina is the oldest known Shelton ancestor of this family. The earliest date recorded December 19, 1816 of Joseph Shelton is when he married Mary (Polly) Cole. Mary (Polly) Cole born March 6, 1800 in Virginia is the daughter of John Cole born December 25, 1771 in New York Colony and Sarah Williams born about 1765 in Washington Co., Virginia.
Joseph Shelton purchased 150 acres February 12, 1827 from John and spouse #2 Winney Cole on Grosses Creek, a branch of the South Fork of the Holston River in Washington Co., Virginia.
Joseph Shelton received a Land Grant 10/7/1834 in Putnam Co., Indiana. I believe Joseph J. Shelton was born in Putnam Co., Indiana in 1832.
Joseph Shelton is listed in the 1840 Morgan Co., Illinois Census. The Johnston Shelton family is also listed in the 1840 Morgan Co., Illinois census. Johnston Shelton and family moved to Anderson Co., Texas about the same time as the Joseph Shelton family to Henderson Co., Texas. I have not been successful in making a connection of these families but they have a lot of similarities.
Joseph Shelton received a 640 acre Land Grant in Henderson Co., Texas, it was sold 3/28/1853 to Cyrus B. Meredith by William Samuel Shelton.
Joseph Shelton and Mary (Polly) Cole had at least seven (7) children.
#1 Sarah Shelton born about May 1818 in Virginia, married 1st Levi Antle 11/28/1837 in Morgan Co., Illinois. Levi Antle died about 1849 in Henderson Co., Texas. Sarah Shelton/Antle married 2nd. Fleming Ball 1/15/1850 in Henderson Co., Texas. Fleming Ball was the widow of Freelove Shelton, sister to Sarah. Sarah Shelton/Antle/Ball died after the 1900 census of Henderson Co., Texas.
#2 William Samuel Shelton born 10/17/1822 in Virginia, married Mary Malinda Scott 11/29/1856 in Texas. Mary Malinda Scott born 4/27/1836 in Franklin Co., Arkansas is the daughter of Sabert Jackson Scott and Mary Elizabeth Unknown. William Samuel Shelton died 8/21/1888 and Mary Malinda Scott died 10/31/1912. Both are buried in Willow Springs Cemetery, Henderson Co., Texas
#3 Freelove Shelton born about 1827 in Virginia, married Fleming Ball 10/24/1847 in Henderson Co., Texas. Freelove Shelton/Ball died August, 1849. She is listed in the 1850 Morality Records of Henderson Co., Texas. Freelove's widow, Fleming Ball married his sister-in-law Sarah Shelton/Antle, the widow of Levi Antle. A child named Levi Ball died in 1849 in Henderson Co., Texas and I believe this maybe the child of Freelove Shelton and Fleming Ball.
#4 Elizabeth Shelton born about 1830 in Virginia, married Moses Anderson Mock 4/26/1853 in Henderson Co., Texas. She may have died before 1860, since Moses Anderson Mock had a different spouse in the 1860 Census. They had a son Joseph Johnston Mock born in 1856 and died 1916 in Peoria, Hill Co., Texas
#5 Joseph J. Shelton born 1/20/1832 in Putnam Co.?, Indiana. He died 2/21/1884 and may be buried in Willow Springs Cemetery, Henderson Co., Texas (Grave Unmarked). He and William Samuel Shelton served on the Willow Springs School Board as Trustee per Henderson Co., Texas school records. Both also served in the Civil War.
#6 Ava M. (Avy) Shelton born 4/1839 in Morgan Co., Illinois or Missouri. She died after the 1910 Census. She married 1st James J. Pickering before 1860 and 2nd. Oliver Scott 1/18/1869 in Henderson Co., Texas. James J. Pickering served in the Civil War with W.H. (Howdy) Martin in Hood's Brigade. They surrendered with General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, Virginia.
#7 Remember Jane (Janie) Shelton born 2/4/1842 in Morgan Co., Illinois and died 5/22/1878 or 5/25/1879 in Willow Springs Cemetery,
Henderson Co., Texas. She married 1st. James Martin 1/17/1861 in Henderson Co., Texas. James Martin served in the Civil War and may have died during Civil War. Remember Jane's 2nd. marriage was to Andrew Jackson Pickering 9/10/1865 in Henderson Co., Texas. Andrew Jackson Pickering was the widow of Eliza Ann/Elizabeth Davis (sister of Susan Davis/Anding).
