(Notes for Starling William Reynolds: This is the letter which belonged to Alice McCreary Caples. She was my gr-grandmothers sister. This letter was written by Starling Reynolds, who was the son of Joseph Reynolds and his wife Martha Griffith. Joe Reynolds note as told to his son Starling Reynolds. "My dad told me that everyone called him Uncle Joe every since he was a small boy. Everyone did call him Uncle Joe, and that old familar fiddle music they call "Don't you want to go to heaven." It was commonly known that my dad did make three trips to Texas from Mississippi. He moved and found what he wanted in Henderson County, Texas on Dry Creek Community where there was four families that settled joining each other as which was Joe and John Reynolds, Tom Johnston-their brother-in-law, and Dan Griffith who later became my Grand Dad. Joe Reynolds was a confederate soldier from Mississippi. He was with the Tennessee Regment and he fought in that noteable Battle at Gettingburg. He told me a snake bit his dad (my Grand Dad Mathew Reynolds) and he went blind of its cause and died in Mississippi. My dad was 12 years old at the time. Dad lived with his mother and sister (Mary Davis whom husband got killed in the war). After settling on Dry Creek they both died, one on the 14th and the other on the 15th in 1880, and was buried together at Payne Spring Cemetary side by side. Then my dad married Martha Griffith (my mom). He told me that there was a name change from Runnells to Reynolds earlier in life. He resented this and would still sign his name Runnells at times. During his trips from Mississippi to Texas he had many narrow escapes. He said as he was traveling along a road about night he saw a very large house. He stopped and asked about the chance to stay over night and a job working. They ask him in and was awful nice and offered him a job. About 10a.m. they took him to a cabin in the back yard and said this is your cabin. They locked the door on him as they left. He smelled a bad odor so he became frightened and crawled under the bed. He found a dead man under the bed so he pulled him out and put him in the bed and stayed under the bed himself. About 3 a.m. the door opened and in rushed some men who started beating on the dead man. He scooted out from under the bed and down the road. They shot at him several time but he got away. Joe Reynolds cleared and fenced 102 acres of timber land by himself with an ax. He then split rails and fenced all 102 acres with a crooked rail fence. He rived his own boards to cover his home with a tool known as a froe. The tool was dull so it wouldn't rough up the roofing board. The old saying goes "Dull as a fro". The first year he and Martha was married they lived on $12.50 as they had wild hogs, deer, turkey, and etc. He raised a garden, made his syrup and raised bees. There were not many places to go, to church mostly. The chief sports were foot racing, jumping, swimming, and wrestling. Later on came baseball and buggys. About 1905 came gas buggys. Joe Reynolds was a camlilite or Church of Chrit, but he did like a lot of self control. Like most people today he was set in his ways. He did some wrongs but the last few years of his life he was an awful sweet humble old man, more like a baby. The word of God says "the old will be set in their ways but must become as a little baby to be saved. It was common for neighbors to borrow fire from one another. It was an art in striking two flint rocks together to make a spark that caught on to punk wood. This he blew with his breath until it caught fire. They all kept their own fires with large back log in fire place covered up with live coal and ashes and etc. " "Friends may come and friends may go and we do remember the present and the past but the most important thing is how we redeem our life in the future is our supreme task."
