Thomas Parrish McManus and Nancy Redfern McManus

Thomas Parrish McManus and Nancy Redfern McManus came to Henderson County, TX. from Illinois, in abt 1849.  They were on the 1850 -1860 and 1870 Henderson County, TX Census.

In the index of the Surveyors Record of Henderson Co.  You will find # A 272, 300 acres surveyed March 13, 1854, on Caney Creek.  Also A. 302 300 Acres on March 13, 1854, 5 1/2 miles northwest of Athens, TX.  and A 528 300 Acres.   These are Survey Assigned numbers, all to Thomas P. McManus.

The Land Grant on A. 272, Vol. 31, was a pre-emption certificate signed the 25th day of Sept.1860, by Sam Houston, Governor.  To Acquire a pre-emption Certificate You had to settle on the place prior to 1853.  This is all recorded in Deed Book Q. pages 271 and 272. Henderson Co. TX. A. 528, is the 300 Acre tract where he lived with his wife Nancy, and raised his family .  This was west of the Sand Flat Community.

Thomas was a Wheelright, mechanic, and Blacksmith.  It was said "He could build you a wagon from the ground up."  He also had a lot on the town square  in Athens, where he most likely had a shop. He and Nancy had 4 boys.  Soloman, (My Granddad was)-- James Younger, John R. and William Frank McManus.  3 Girls. Louisa , Susan E. , and Lucy Rebecca McManus. When the Civil War broke out Thomas and Nancy McManus sent 3 boys to serve their country.  Solomon Marion McManus.  James Younger McManus, and John R. McManus.  Thomas also had a brother , J. Y. McManus who served.  Also his son-in-law, James J. Green who had married his daughter Louisa.  With the men gone, it left the work to the daughters, and the youngest son William Frank McManus.  Their sons would serve in the Red River battles along the boundary's between Texas and Louisiana.  This came from their copies of War Records in Federal Archives in Forth Worth, TX.

After the war Solomon McManus moved over in the Western part of Henderson County, near the Navarro County line.  This is where he raised his family.    James Younger McManus moved first to Dallas and Jack County, TX.  Then in 1886 he moved to Indian Territory, near Davis, OK.  John R. McManus moved to the Clear Creek area.  Louisa, after James J. Green died re-married Andrew J. Meazell, and moved to the Kerens area.   Susan E. and her dau. Martha had moved to Kerens, TX.  Susan re-married A. J. Scarborough   Her Daughter Martha, married John Jefferson Wallace, and some of the Henderson County Wallace's come from this sturdy and fine Pioneer Stock.  William Frank McManus, married Lucinda Etheridge and moved to Jack County, near Newport, TX.
