FULTON FAMILY
In the late 1840’s, Thomas Fulton, his wife, Mary and their children moved to Henderson
County, Texas from Tennessee. Thomas and Mary Wills were married in Knox Co.
Tennessee 25 Jan. 1821. All of their children were also born in Tennessee.
Their children were Mary, John Wills, Hugh, David, Martha, Rebecca B., Thomas Jefferson,
Eleanor C., William M., James S., and Ephraim W. (Eli).
The family bought land in Henderson Co. from B. C. Walters on the 6th of April 1849 as recorded
in Deed Book E page 448. This land was about 4 miles north of the town of Athens on Caney Creek.
Thomas Fulton died before the 1850 census was taken, possibly from typhoid. John
W. moved the rest of the family to Larissa in Cherokee Co., where they could get medical help.
It is believed that Mary and a couple of the girls may have also died in the early 1850’s.
Hugh (named for his paternal grandfather) was in Illinois until the late 1870’s when he also came to
Hamilton Co., Texas. By 1850, David had married Larena A. and was living in Cherokee Co.
with two brothers by the surname Stadler. Martha married Isaac Kirkpatrick in 1849 and was
living in Cherokee Co. in 1850. Rebecca never married.
Thomas Jefferson moved to Jack Co. by 1860 and was working for a family by the name
of Funcett. John W. takes over the responsibility of the younger members of the family.
In 1861, Thomas Jefferson joins the TST and 6 weeks later is mustered into the service of
the Confederacy. He served for four years in Co. H 2nd Texas Mounted Cavalry. His unit
was responsible for guarding the Texas western frontier.
John W. also joined the Confederacy and served for two years in the 34th Texas Cavalry
Company C.
After the war between the states, Thomas Jefferson moved back to Henderson Co. where he
met and married Martha Fredonia (Donie) Bass Underwood who was a widow. Her
husband, George Underwood had died as a result of an injury received in a civil war battle.
John W. also returned to Henderson Co., where he remained a bachelor until he was 54 years old.
He married Martha Ellen Cavett Howeth, a widow.
James S. married Nancy Howeth in 1866. William married Madora Bass in 1871. Ephraim
W. married Ida Butcher in 1871.
Thomas Jefferson and Donie’s daughter, Martha (Mattie) married John Wreay Davis, son
of William and Naomi Wreay Davis also pioneers of early Henderson Co.
