The old familiar sight. The Malakoff Depot soon will join
the rank and file of the rest of The Steam Age era.
The Old Depot was purchased at an undisclosed figure by Texas
Clay Industries Division of Malakoff.
Their plans are not complete as to what they are going to do with
it. However, the News was assured it would have a good
home.
Growth began in Malakoff when the railroad came through beginning
in 1880. At one time, large quantities of coal, bricks and
farm produce were shipped from the depot at Malakoff, and four
passenger trains made daily stops here.
When the pace of living was much slower than today, the Old Depot
played a part in mail and freight delivery as many as many as
four times daily. It once had waiting rooms for passengers
and tickets to all points in the nation served by railways.
Sometimes 40 or more people would leave from this station going
to football games and the Texas State Fair, etc.
In World War II, many hometown servicemen departed from the Old
Depot going to training centers and overseas.
The Old Depot is scheduled to be moved in the very near future.
