from The Malakoff News
Friday, December 19, 1958
Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Tanner will celebrate their Golden Wedding
Anniversary Saturday, December 27. They will be honored by their
children with Open House Sunday, December 28 at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Tanner, 515 East Dewey Street, Malakoff. The
reception is to be between the hours of 2 and 4 oclock in
the afternoon and the many friends of the family are extended a
cordial invitation to call.
Mrs. Tanner, the former Miss Minnie Lee Bell of Shelby Chapel,
and Mr. Tanner were married December 27, 1908. The wedding was
held at the home of the brides mother, the late Mrs. T. J.
Bell. The late Rev. Young, pastor of the Shelby Chapel Methodist
church, officiated at the ceremony.
Immediately following the ceremony, the couple began their
married life in the Phillips Chapel community, north of Athens,
living there for two years. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Tanner moved to
their farm, ten miles south of Malakoff and lived there until
1919, moving on a farm two miles south of town.
Mr. Tanner and his partner, L. R. Tiner of Malakoff, opened a
garage on West Mitcham Street in 1919, which was operated under
the name of Tanner & Tiner. Along with the automobile repair
business, the firm assumed the Chevrolet dealership during that
year.
Mr. and Mrs. Tanner moved to their present home on West Mitcham
Street in 1928. The following year, Mr. Tanner purchased Mr.
Tiners interest in the business firm and the name was
changed to Tanner Motor Company, under which name it has operated
since that time.
Mr. Tanner and his son, Richard, purchased the W. W. Jackson
building on East Mitcham in 1951 and moved the business to this
location. During 1952, Mr. Tanner retired from the business,
selling his interest to his son, Richard Tanner. He is now
engaged in the cattle business.
Mr. and Mrs. Tanner are the parents of twelve children, nine of
whom survive. They are Richard, City; Jack of San Antonio; Miss
Coriene Tanner, Stockton, Calif.; E. A. Jr., Ft. Worth; Mrs.
Herbert (Velma) Johnson, Ft. Worth; Mrs. Bill (Inez) Green, City;
Weldon of Big Springs; Lester of Dallas; and Mrs. Don (Loretta)
Petty, London England. They have fourteen grandchildren.
All of the children are expected to attend the Open House except
Mrs. Petty and her family.
