Golden Anniversay
The 50th anniversary of Durwood and Vera Fite was celebrated one week early when the couples children surprised them with a celebration from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 9 at the IOOF Lodge Hall on Cayuga Drive. The former Vera Lee Stallings married Durwood Fite Nov. 16, 1935 in Athens at the home of her grandmother Mrs. Sally Hawthorn. Bro. Wilson officiated the ceremony. Since they married the couple has lived in Athens except the first year they lived in Oklahoma. Fite retired from Robbins Bros. Wholesale Grocers after 38 years and the Athens Independent School District after 14 years. Mrs. Fite retired from the Athens Independent School District where she was empoyed for 17 years. Hosting the reception honoring their parents were Gene Fite of California, James Fite of Poynor, Mary Robertson of Mesquite and Dana Fite of Corsicana. The couple also had two children who are deceased Hubert and Grady. They have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The grandchildren served at the tables during the recption. Out of town guests attending the reception were from Dallas, Mesquite, Denton, Corsicana, Eustace, Frankston, Poynor and Palestine.
