from The Malakoff News
Friday, July 8, 1960
In the Saturday night judging, Miss Ann Williams, daughter of Mr.
And Mrs. B. C. Williams, was chosen the 1960 Queen of the
Malakoff Lions Club's first annual professional rodeo. Miss
Williams was sponsored by the Tanner Motor Company.
As the contest winner, Miss Williams, a sophomore in the Malakoff
High School, was presented the Queen's Crown and other gifts at
the hands of the local civic organization.
The judging, it was announced, was made upon the manner in which
the contestants were presented, and the originality of the floats
and their adherence to the central theme. The judges were chosen
from the out of town visitors whose identity was not revealed.
The presentation of the queen's crown was made by Mayor Joe
Barnett, and Neal Lawson assisted in presenting the gifts to the
other contestants.
Many out of town visitors attending the showing here were high in
their praise for the numerous floats that were entered in the
parade by local business establishments. Some said they were very
nice, indeed, and that they were among te best they had seen in
this section of the state.
The other eight contestants and their sponsors, furnishing parade
floats were as follows: Sherry Nell Phillips by Phillips Food
& Appliances; Carolyn Cade by Kirby's; Donna Drake by Drake
Oil Company; Mary Shumate by Monroe's Café; Rita Cherry by
Humphries Insurance and Miss Helen McClain; Mickie Ferguson by
the Athens Riding Club; Nancy Phillips by Citizens State Bank;
and Wendy Lamb by Royall & Waller Chevrolet Company.
These eight young ladies, for their participation in the rodeo
event, were presented with silver belt buckles bearing gold
emblems.
