Old Three Legs Scores In Derby

from The Malakoff News

Friday, February 17, 1967

Ernest Allen of Malakoff, trainer and handler of dogs, has scored
again with two of his pupils, Sharpsman and Pinewood Pal.
A third trainee, John Hogan Boy Jr., was also in the winning circle.

Sharpsman, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Denton Sharp of Duncan,
Oklahoma, won first place in the Open Shooting dog competition
which was held over the weekend at the Blue Bonnet Quail Hunters
Club at Kerens. The win was the best two out of three for the young
black and white pointer. Sharpsman had a good forward race and
scored on four coveys.

Winning money also was Old Three Legs, better known as Pinewood Pal.
Pal scored on six coveys, one honor, or sometimes called a back and one
step to a flush. The stepped to a flush is what cost the three legged dog the
first place win. Had this not happened, it was assumed he would have
taken first place money.

John Hogan Boy Jr., also from Allen's kennels, took second place in the
derby with one covey find. He was steady to wing and shot. Most of his
competition was two years old or older and Jr. is just a puppy this year.
