SPECIAL TO THE NEWS.
Athens, Tex., April 9 -- Dr. and Mrs. Matthews today celebrated their golden wedding. Dr. Thomas M. Matthews Sr. was born at Cumberland Court House, Va., on March 6, 1830. His father, George H. Matthews, was a prominent lawyer and for fifty consecutive years District Attorney, but never sought or held a political office Dr. Matthews after graduating at the University of Virginia in both its academical and medical departments came to Texas in 1853, locating in Shelby County, when Judge and later Gen. O M Roberts was practicing law there. In 1855 he moved to Fort Worth when it was but a village. On April 9, 1857, he was married to Miss Emma Grazard in Mount Enterprise, Rusk County. She was born in Silasand, Norway, and came when but 7 years of age with her parents to Nacogdoches. They have had thirteen children, eleven boys and two girls ten of whom are now living, nine boys and one girl. The boys are all grown and doing well. One a lawyer, one an M D, one a D D S, one a merchant, two ticket agents for the Cotton Belt Railroad, one traveling agent for The Dallas News and one a clerk. There are thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild living. Dr. Matthews is in his seventyeight year. He has been a very successful practitioner of medicine fifty-three years. He never sought or held a political office. Was for some six years Deputy County Clerk of Tarrant County under G. Nance in the fifties and has served upon three Grand Juries. Entered the Confederate Army as a private in 1862, but was made surgeon and served most of the time as surgeon of Parsons' Twelth Texas Cavalry and brigade and later as president of the special ex-medical board of the Trans-Mississippi Department. Was grand master of Masons in Texas in 1881-82 and for the last consecutive twenty-two years was and is now chairman of the committee on foreign correspondence of the Masonic grand lodge. Since 1853 he has been a constant reader, first of the Galveston News (when there was no Dallas News) under the management of the Richardson, and now of The Dallas News.
