Rome, August 8 -
Even tho the weather has been rather hot and sultry here of the
past week, crops are maturing rapidly, but signs which have been
seen upon the cotton indicates that some type of insect is
working on it. The young corn looks as if it might produce a
fairly good yield as the last rains have helped it greatly.
"Uncle" Levi Trammell has shown the
people of this community how to be prepared for the cold rainy
days of winter for he canned a large beef Monday of last week.
Prof. Bailey of Cayuga came and directed the
canning of it.
Charlie Boyd, the local committeeman of the
cotton reduction program, was quite busy completing the measuring
of the farmers acreage here last week, prior to plowing up the
amount which they had previously signed up to destroy. The
growers were anxious to receive their checks for it.
Mrs. A. R. Trammell of this place proved several
weeks ago that all good markswomen do not enter gun matches and
compete for national honors. For while her husband was away from
home she heard a great disturbance among her chickens, having
been previously bothered with hawks, she rushed to the back yard
with a shotgun. Then she saw a large hawk dart swiftly downward
attempting to catch one of her choice fryers which had sought
refuge with other fowls among some weeds, but failed and winged
upward and lighted in a dead tree some seventy yards away. She
raised the trusty old relic which was loaded with buckshot, fired
and down fell the chicken thief with a fluttering of wings. And
when her husband came home, he measured it and found that the
hawk's body had wings covered five and one-half foot boxing
plank. Not so bad Mrs. Trammell.
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Anding of Becks Chapel
visited with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Fuller
during the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. James Knight of Willow Springs were
visiting here one day last week.
Hubert Boyd, P. J. and Byron Trammell
left Friday of last week with the Howitzer Company for Palacios,
where the company will attend the annual encampment of the
National guard.
John Gage of Malakoff visited Albert Carrigan
Friday and Saturday of last week.
The Primitive Baptists closed a three day meeting here Sunday
evening. Several elders from other places took part in the
services.
Bud Anding of Beck"s Chape had business
here Tuesday.
Thomas McEvoy who is working on the new dam
which is being built for the Koon Kreek Klub, said Tuesday that
the Lacy Company would probably finish the dam within nine more
days.
Jackson Hines of Willow Springs was here
Tuesday.
