Rome, July 18.- Well, at last the hopes of the farmers of this community for a corn crop, has been somewhat revived, for they were surprised with a heavy rain Saturday evening. However, a part of the corn will not be greatly aided by this rain as it was so badly damaged by the hot, dry weather during the past five weeks. But the young corn will now produce a fairly good yield. And, too, the cotton and other crops will now continue their rapid growth, and will produce more than they would have, should it have failed to rain during the remainder of this month.
It seems people will just be pessimistic regardless of what happens, for as the writer stood in front of a store in Athens, Saturday, watching the downpour, he heard several men remark: " I wish it would stop raining so that I could go home." Well, friends, the time of miracles are over, and he who created this world, which we like to cuss so well, will not stop the sun from shining or the rain from falling, so that we may go home in the dry, gather crops and et certa.
