Payne Spring-Oct. 30- Editor REVIEW:
The most notable social event of this section recently
was the marriage of Miss Mable Walling to Mr. J.
C.
Cook, both of Hickory Grove community. The
wedding took place at the residence of the bride's
father last Sunday 28th ult. at 4 p. m. Rev. F. M.
Leach officiating. There was a sumptuous supper
served to the friends of the couple. On Monday was
a dining in honor of the event at the residence of the
groom's parents. The bride is a most accomplished
young lady. The groom is the youngest child of his
parents and is a young man of real merit. Our old
friend George Cook, says he is left alone like
"the
last rose of summer." He is building him a nice
residence near his store house and his parents will
remove to it as soon as composure into the quietude
and solitariness of bachelordom unless some good
girl will come to his relief.
Prof. Campbell and Miss Della Owen opened
the public
school here Monday, but owing to the cotton picking
season not being over, the attendance was small. There
were about 160 pupils enrolled and as soon as the cotton
is out the school will be large. Prof. Campbell has
made a
fine impression here, and inspired confidence among the
people in his ability. Miss Della is well known here as a
successful and popular teacher.
About thirty-five people assembled here Monday night to
hear the speaking by Capt. J. J. Faulk and
County Attorney
L. W. Meredith. Owing to sickness in his family
Capt. Faulk
did not come but the editor of the REVIEW came in his
stead. Mr. Meredith opened the speaking by a
discussion
of imperialism, trusts, etc. Mr. Yantis followed
in brief but
interesting discussion of the fundamental principles of
democracy. The speakers were listened to with attention
and very favorable comments were made upon the speaking.
We believe there will be a good turn out of the democrats at
this box.
