OPELIKA

Sept 1-As there hasn’t been anything from this place since the name of the town was changed from Wanda to Opelika, if the good editor will permit, I shall pen you a few lines to let you know we are still on the map, and it will take considerable time to erase us. Things are moving along lively now, since the rays of old Sol are not quite so severe, and the cotton season has opened up briskly.

The Ingram & Birdwell gin is humming under the management of Homer Ransevalt , assisted by Finis Hatton and Ben Corley.

We are sorry to report Mr. J. F. Reid is on the sick list this week.

Our constable, Tom Ball, had the misfortune of losing three of his horses within the last ten days. Cause unknown.

We are glad to report that Mr. Fred Roberts who is out near San Angelo for this health is improving.

Miss Nelia Barton is attending the summer normal at Murchison. Mis Nelia is a fine little girl and our best wishes are for her success in the literary line.

We understand that quite a number will attend the socialist encampment at Murchison on the 12, 13, and 14. Hon. Stanley J. Clark and Mrs. Dora Mertz will make some interesting addresses on those days. Mrs. Mertz will speak Sunday from the Bible. They are both from Oklahoma.

Messrs. Bert Ketchum and George Unerwerh of Arlington were visitors here last week returning Saturday. They reported a very enjoyable visit to all their old friends. Quite an enjoyable fishing party was given for them over on Kickapoo and about twenty-five persons participated in the feast, being among the number; Messrs. Vickery brothers and families, Mr. Bill Spray and family, Grover Dunn, Misses Kate Vickery, Tuppie McDaniel and Flora Spray. They caught about thirty pounds of fish and the young folks made several gallons of cream and the boys furnished the soda-pop, candy and gum, and several good pictures were made about the camp and the young people wound up the most enjoyable day of the season by a grape hunt.

Mr. & Mrs. Henry Shelton gave the young folks a party Friday evening and it was enjoyed by a jolly crowd.

Grandma Parker, mother of Mrs. Adkins, returned to Corpus Christi a few days ago. We all hated to lose this Christian lady for she was a tireless worker in our Sunday school.

Miss Mary Lutrick who visited at Ben Wheeler for several weeks returned home Friday and brought her cousin Mr. Smith with her. She reported a most pleasant visit.

Mr. G. B. Wallace’s daughter of Corsicana visited the homefolks several days, returning yesterday on No. 3.

J. T. Vickery and P. W. McDaniel went to Athens yesterday returning on the noon train.

Mrs. Bascom Ford visited Mrs. Berry at Leagueville for the past week.

Misses Gladys Landrum and Hattie Dewberry of West were guests of Prof. And Mrs. W. G. Fowler for a few days.

Gus Newman is at Corsicana. Also Charley Shelton.

Joe Echols returned from Dallas Sunday.

Mrs. J. J. Spray spent several days at Commerce and Paris visiting children and grandchildren.

We understand that the Cotton Belt Ry. Co. will make some improvements on the switch here, extending it to the upper trestle and leased grounds for an immediate erection of cotton seed house and we are to have a ticket agent here soon. All this is needed for the benefit of the public. There has been shipped four car loads of melons, and about 30 cars of wood recently. This brings money to the farmers and with a little industry could be made very profitable.

Bill Spray is working some this week.

Finis Hatton is having a fine little bungalow built on his lot across the track.

Oscar Reagan finished picking cotton last week. His crop evidently was a “bumper.”

John Davis spent a few hours in town today and met Mr. Ivy of Athens and took him out into the country.

W. E. Jordan and Seth Scott went up to Grand Saline last week. Mr. Scott is still trying to explain how he lost his shoes under that arbor that night. They say crops are better here than there.

The prayermeeting at Reid’s Branch was well attended last Sunday night. We don’t want you to forget that we have prayermeeting here on Wednesday nights and want everybody to come and join in and help us out. Usually a crowd of young people comes with song books and ready to take a part. Try coming out. You might accidentally enjoy it and get benefited too. Best wishes to all the Review correspondents and to the editor.

END (note: prayermeeting was in the article as one word)
