Mrs. J. I. Wofford Pays First Poll Tax

City poll tax receipt No. 1 was issued Saturday to Mrs. Jack I. Wofford.
This is the first time in many years that Chief Wofford did not get the
first receipt. Having passed his sixtieth birthday during the past twelve
months he reached the age of exemption and so conceded the honor
of getting the first receipt to his wife.
Six hundred and twenty-two persons paid the city poll tax fee last year
but this year being an “off year” is expected to be a light year.
The first county poll tax receipt for the new year had not been issued
this morning.
